Azure announcement - they managed to get it back online

"Microsoft is due to make its own Azure announcements next week"

I have the scoop. It says, "Hot diggety! We found the PKI certificate, it was behind the sofa".

It's quite amusing that a book seller is showing MS how to do IT.

Windows 8 Laptop woudn't have got nicked

Simple Explanation - MS MURDERED THE NETBOOK

They came with Linux - the netbook market exploded.

Then MS managed to squeeze XP onto the things (well, first they had to be made with heavier hardware to cope with the Windows bloat).

Then MS told the OEMs not to run Linux on them. Or else have their air supply cut off.

And the 2nd half of the graph tells the ugly story. Demand plummetted!

We are seeing much the same thing happening now with PC's.

FB Phone

Hey, if FB can make a phone based on a Social Network, Google can make one based on a search engine, then maybe MS can make a phone based on a whole operating system... Or how about a desktop based on a phone.... Oh dear....

Anyway the very concept of this FB phone is enough to make me shudder, but it's not aimed at me, it's aimed at the exact opposite of me, yes those saddos!

Re: Windows Security Patches + Anti-Virus considered Harmful

@mickey mouse the fith "Eadons "Linux doesnt get malware" comment"

I said, "virus", not "malware"". As usual, some commentards here do not understand the difference between a virus and "malware"

An analogy in the biological world (and don't take this analogy too far) is that a virus is a microbe, but not all microbes are viruses.

Also please don't confuse a virus with a trojan.

Once you understand software, then you will realise I am correct.

P.S. those guys that think (or lie or troll) that Linux is not attacked because it is not popular have obviously missed the memo that Linux is the most popular OS in the world (server-side, mobile etc etc). Don't confuse computers with "desktop". And even on desktops the argument is refuted. Not a single virus writer has managed to get a Linux virus out there in the wild (as opposed to an unrealistic scenario by some asshat in a lab).

Preventing viruses from operating is trivially EASY. You set the execute flag to OFF. It's a problem that was solved in the 1970's. However, Windows cannot do this without breaking backwards compatibility, hence the need for these Windows virus scanners.

HOPE THIS HELPS.

Re: Oh boy...

@RyokuMas - "about how a Linux patch was bricking some machines"

FUD. You seem to be referring to a UEFI issue - and that is down to MS being evil with regards to insisting PC-makers use MS-only signing keys, combined with Samsung screwing up. The issue was not just confined to Linux but also to Windows.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2027819/not-just-linux-windows-can-brick-samsung-laptops-too.html

All of this was down to "trusted computing" by another name - "secure boot", which means that effectively you do not control your PC hardware any more. MS does.

Windows Security Patches + Anti-Virus considered Harmful

Windows is not ready for the desktop and it is not Industrial Strength.

Linux is virus-immune, has no need for any of these dodgy anti-virus products, and that contributes to the lower TCO of Linux. That's not hype, it's a simple fact.

That's a cunning plan. The only tiny flaw is, to see in the past (relative to right now) you would need to be able to move the mirror away from the interesting area faster than the speed of light.

"The global PC market is dwindling, and Windows 8 could be to blame, according to the beancounters at IDC"

And this is the point I have been making here for ages. Windows is killing the PC in a similar way to how Windows effectively killed the netbook.

Windows 8 has made matters desperate (together with the UEFI secure boot nonsense). But even before Win8 - things were not looking good in the Win 7 days. In general people are not happy with the "Windows Experience" - and many are happy to pay a premium for a Mac. That's the high end. The low end have gone for Android tablets. The middle have gone for iPads or stuck with their existing PCs.

If the OS market in desktops was as competitive as it is in mobile, then the PC market would be vibrant, with lots of innovation going on. The miserable toxic wasteland that is the PC market is caused by one company - Microsoft.

Re: The problem is simple

@Don Jefe - "There were never the crazy software/chip margins in mass produced PC's"

There is a difference however. The cost of PC hardware has fallen to the point where a Windows licence has a huge effect on the final price of the product. For the price of a windows licence, you can practically buy a whole tablet.

This will be the ruin of MS, because its competitors operating systems cost nothing (open source) and, as a double whammy, they run well on modest hardware and faster on standard hardware.

Each year hardware gets cheaper, and therefore MS will be less able to justify its cut. In the same way MS undercut IBM, it has become IBM-like, with massive operational overheads and is itself being undercut.

Re: PC-producing pals

"Why build a factory when you can buy a read made one for half the price"

That's what MS did to Nokia, in effect. They hoped that Nokia's brand could hand them market share. Unfortunately that tactic failed abominably. Ironically Nokia had to close its factories.

Eadon
Silver badge
Boffin

The problem is simple

People don't want a PC with Windows 8 on it.

If you put a Linux-based OS on a PC but brand it something else, "Android" style, then those PC's will likely fly off the shelves (this actually happened in the netbook market, until MS told the OEM's to fall in line. Which then artificially slaughtered the netbook market.)

The issue we have with the PC market isn't that PC's are undesirable per se, it's that they suck because they come with windows, they need anti-virus, they're packed with crapware, which takes effort to clean off, and so forth.

If PC's were in demand, then there would be more profits, they are not, because there is no competition so we end up with a sub-standard OS on them pre-installed. Also, PC's now have "secure boot" that makes it more difficult to ditch windows.

Re: I don't think so - Use LibreOffice instead.

"Meanwhile in the real world, LibreOffice just doesn't cut it. It might do for limited home use, but its not even close to an enterprise ready product"

@AC 20:42 - uh huh, then please explain why technology blue chips are making LIbreOffice and OpenOffice the default, and demanding justification for MS Office licences these days. Most enterprises are on Office 2003 and that's more than what they need. LibreOffice is much better than that. MS Office 2007 onwards is WORSE, a devolution - the ribbon interface that slows down experienced users, extra bloat and no real advantages.

Re: I don't think so - Use LibreOffice instead.

LibreOffice. It's more than good enough for Blue Chips. It's more than good enough for SME's. It's a professional product. No licence fees. No subscriptions. It's 100% open and 100% free. And you can't get your systems audited for using it, nor is your data exposed to a foreign mega-corp, the FBI etc.

Did I mention LibreOffice also had the advantage of being ribbon and Metro-UI free?

That an organisation needs MS Office is a myth, perpetuated by marketers and the fanbois.

The elephant in the room is Win8 - the Toxic OS

"cannibalising" - laptops are not "cannibalising" PC's - the relationship is actually one species eating a different species.

Cannibilising would be iPhone 6 stopping iPhone 5 sales, for instance. Same species.

Anyway, no one wants Windows 8. MS controls the PC desktop and prevents competition. So the market has reacted by not buying PC's. MS is killing the desktop market in a similar way to how it killed the netbook market. By making the computers suck.

This analysis is obvious to EVERYBODY except analysts.

Propulsion can work in 3 ways for solar system travel - pea shooter mode (fire fast stuff from the exhaust, action = reaction) - solar sail mode (use radiation pressure of sunlight - physics quiz question- how can a massless photon exert pressure?) or use gravitational sling shot effects (best used in combination with the previous two).

Re: For me .net is still a benchmark of incompetence

"I mean .net programmes don't even run on all versions of Windows. It's a bytecode which needs to be re-compiled but is less portable than native win32 code."

That is a correct statement. Even Joel On Software complained bitterly about this when he tried .NET.

"And what do you get for it? Bounds checking! Seriously every modern Pascal compiler does that for you at (virtually) no extra cost, and I'm sure there are many other languages which can do the same."

That is also correct.

"For me someone using .net shows that they didn't think before choosing their platform. They just went with the first best thing the advertisement told them to use."

Correct again, from personal experience, from an enterprise computing perspective, I can vouch that .NET tends to be chosen by those teams that do not understand enterprise computing.

So why did this insightful post get downvoted? For telling the irrefutable truth? (Rhetorical question).

Re: It's whether the degree is *hard* or *soft*

@FirstName "It's just the teensiest bit frustrating, sometimes, when you play so hard-to-get with any facts to back them up."

I'm often providing factual explainations as to why Unix systems are superior. They have a sold security model from the ground up, they are faster, require less powerful hardware to run, they run on more platforms and POSIX systems are open standards based. They come with superb window managers (from light weight to eye candy) a superb command line interface and much software that has API's that allow it to be run from the command line, in the Unix philosophy of piping output from one system to input to another system through stdin and stout.

In particular if you take Linux, it has additional advantages that come with being GPL open source. You are welcome to check these facts out for yourself, there is not enough space in this comment box to write a wikipedia article with citations.

Ultimately, if you're a Linux or Unix user, you can bask in warm feeling of superiority over your clueless windows brethren.
