People don't need to buy The Who any more, they're sick of hearing them every day for free on fecking CSI.

"For me, a context-sensitive touchpad on a display like an iPod touch/ small Android tablet/ smartphone would be an improvement..."
Samsung have one of these for their phones and TVs. You get choices between a simple, full, keyboard, game style controls and swipe pad for different context uses. Controlling the TV and using the phone as an DLNA server over wifi is a very nice feature.

iPhone 5 a no-show at Apple's 'Let's talk iPhone' event
I commented that the "Let's talk iPhone" tag line meant voice integration was the main feature of the announcement but got shot down for such a suggestion.
Apple are playing catchup with the rest of market now rather than innovating. The 4S is a stop-gap 'cos the 4 has fallen behind and the no-show of the 5 I'd guess means there's some problems with the real world delivery of the device. The iPhone 4 now feels like a generation behind something like the Galaxy S2, maybe this is all behind the litigation delaying tactics of the patent disputes.

Amazon's Kindle Fire is sold at a loss
Customer aquisition
There's always a financial cost associated with acquiring new customers factored into every business plan. The Kindle also locks new customers into the Amazon content eco-system so such a customer would be of high value. Factor that in with Amazon's cost of acquiring standard website customers and the value is probably pretty high, possibly higher than the loss on the device. Basically the loss making Kindle can be seen as a cheap customer acquisition tool.

Apple sued for iPhone, iPad chip 'patent rip-off'
Reversals
How many of these companies originally filed patents for the defensive purpose of stopping themselves being sued by someone else rather than actively suing others? Since the Apple have started to aggressively go after competitors (usually the action of trolls from which the patents protect), maybe others have just gone "sod it, Apple need to be put in their place".

RE: Over compression
It definitely goes back to the 60s, there's an interview with 'Big Brother and the Holding Company' talking about mixing their first mainstream studio album; paraphrasing "every time the needle would go into the red, the engineers jumped. We wanted it in the red all the time, they wanted it in the green".
There was...
Years ago there was a TV documentary or something about/featuring this. A sound engineer was recalling a story about a record executive complaining that just finished Pearl Jam (for example) master tape wasn't as loud as the new Metallica (for example) album and could they mix it again to make everything louder.

"sexual arousal of the central character at both the idea and the spectacle of the total degradation, humiliation, mutilation, torture, and murder of his naked victims."
"There is little attempt to portray any of the victims in the film as anything other than objects to be brutalised, degraded and mutilated for the amusement and arousal of the central character, as well as for the pleasure of the audience."
Sounds very similar to 'Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom' and 'Salon Kitty' both passed fully uncut by the BBFC.

"I have my phone with me, and that stores a good selection already. So what do I need my music online for?"
So you can purchase a license to a particular piece of media/music/video/whatever and access it anywhere you may be and on any device you want to.
You can then have your music/film collection via your phone, your tv, your laptop, via your friends computer, at the office, anywhere anyhow. The device will be immaterial, all your media via any method available.

There's been steadicam plugins for After Effects etc for donkeys years. I never liked them much in production work 'cos the zooming meant you lost resolution and ended up with a fuzzy looking picture, but that was back in the days of SD. I guess with HD to Youtube this isn't really an issue.

Hackers mock North Korea heir-apparent birthday boy
I saw that video
It was on the official YouTube channel, which I happened upon a link to through a major newspaper site article. When I saw it I thought "either that newspaper has linked to the wrong profile or the North Korean government have a totally unappreciated sense of humour". By the end the he got run-over and died I thought "no, this can't be genuine."
Greek police cuff Anonymous spokesman suspect
They probably think they are all so "elite"
That's one downside has having a group with absolutely no structure. Any wannabe plonker can declare themselves part of it or to speak for it. And the ones that speak out and seek the attention will probably be the most clueless of all and make the whole look like completely hopeless amateurs. The Greek/Geek police have removed one more turnip from the internet. Good.
