Re: Piss off
To add to Spartacus(ssesssss) comment, pressing control + P in a touchscreen device is not trivial. Doing it a the Citrix Xendesktop (yeah I know, right?) requires for that specific shortcut to be created, etc. So It is quie strange to remove the obvious user interface options we use in EVERY SINGLE PRODUCTIVITY APP.
In fact, if they love their damn ribon so much, why not create a windows_menu_to_ribon automatic conversor: almost every windows app uses windws menues, why not create a single application that can represent it as a ribon and create a single user experience ?
Re: This is ridiculous (as is the usual drivel coming out Business Insider)
I have two observations to make:
I am not quite wure you can "opt out" since it only says it will track you less, not that it will stop tracking you altoghether.
My other concern is with the "everywere "statement. You say it is not going to track your location. I don`t know exactly how the algorythms asociated with this work, so I have no idea wether it is going to track users using location as part of the logic or if is , perhaps, going to update the ID base on location. Or if it is going to send (ID, current location) to the service in order for marketers to target you and make offers in your general direction. Judging from the marketers "excitement" with this feature, my guess is for the worst.....
Behold !
It took me 5 minutes: Samsung F700, Release 2007. Rectangle with round corers, touch screen , Square icons.
The legal system sucks gonads.....
Re: The US was built on stolen IP
The only part of this article that actually caught my eye. So no US ever stole any IP from anyone willingly...it just happened, AMIRIGHT ?
Re: Is this English?
Levering has come to be known as Leveraging, in financial communities. This may have originally been a slang adaptation, since leverage was a noun, however, modern dictionaries (such as Random House Dictionary and Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of Law) refer to its use as a verb as well. It was first adopted for use as a verb in American English in 1957
Re: Epic fail
I just read your post with Fat Bastard's voice in my head (fat Scottish stereotype, Austin Powers Character).....Brilliant
Re: Playground stuff again
While I wholeheartedly agree about lawyers being paid to do a better job, I feel the company they represent (and by extension the result of the trial which results in legal precedents) will be punished for something that they should not be punished for.
Imagine you are sentenced to death penalty because you lawyer messed up by something like this and tell me if you still find it correct.

Re: Justin Timberlake?
Since the dawn of communications, humanity has led a fruitless war: how to embed irony, humor and other even subtle metadata to allow for transparent point to point exchanges of information (also called protocol).
It is a hard fight and there are no winners....
Re: Gentlemen , choose your poison
@Destroy all Monsters : indeed. But if my memory serves me right, the REAL Holy Wars never ended well , if indeed they have ever ended..... So this is another Really smart reason to fight right ? RIGHT ?!
Gentlemen , choose your poison
Don't get me wrong. I love The register. I love the comments section. I've learned a lot reading other people's comments and made a few contributions myself. But i am more and more often picking a trend that is starting to become an annoyance: the never ending feud between faction A and faction B (for variable values of a A and B, mainly Apple iOS-Android, Apple-Google, Apple-Microsoft, Linux-Windows, etc.).
I know, people tend to be hot blooded (I love a good OS Bashing amongst friends) but seriously, I cannot but shriek when I see that some people defend brands or business models as if their lives depended on them. Like Microsoft, Apple, Google, Facebook, IBM or whatever ? buy their products. They are all imperfect, prone to fail and will disappoint you eventually, because believe it or not even though they make your life easier than ever, provide you with countless features and are beautiful to the eye (of the beholder) they are only things made by a company to make money. That is it. And believe it or not, those companies will go out of their way to deprive you of your joy if that is what makes their bottom line blacker. So be kind, rewind and stop killing each other over utter bollocks.
Re: @More likely...America's bruised ego
Well there is nothing intrinsically wrong with it. In my case once I turned 18 I chose to work and support most of my expenses (study, health, food, entertainment) leaving only housing which my family provided for me until I could do it myself. I think it is healthier for people to take care of themselves as soon as possible or at least attempt to do it in order to grow up. IMHO if you keep providing everything for your kids they will never have a true grasp of how things work, how money is earned and well spent, etc. I am not advocating abandoning them to their luck, but leaving the nest is a requirement for adulthood.
Statitistics are inconclusive, 90 percent of us know that
How do you define "Extreme porn viewing"? "Smut addiction" is exactly what ? How do yo exactly go from watching porn to having legal or interpersonal problems ? I am quite partial to the idea that it might be a symptom but definitively not the cause of their problems. And also , please provide d definition for relationship or interpersonal problems, since one mans meal is another mans poison (replace man with woman for same results).
Re: They're called "Glades"
Stross has them coinedas as a custom rig that our hero uses on a daily basis, hooked up to his personal cloud (his exocortex, an extension of his own brain) and enables him to do oh so many things. If I could get my hands on such a custom rig, not depending on any particular company to provide the service, overlya ads and most importantly , sell my life to the highest bidder, I´d pay top Dolar / Euro / Peso for it.
T-800 because i want to be one
Re: freedom?
"The land that no shoed person shall enter" YOU HAVE EARNED MY RESPECT GOOD SIR
Re: Apple TV3
Sarcasm ?
The first thing i thought of exactly
What if it is pondering the most asked questions and using them as a sort of response cache? How long before it inevitably leads you to porn sites ? You know, the one and only true answer to anything in the internet is porn....or 47.
I am getting my coat while I type this.
Re: Revenue?
As Ollie pointed out before, the product is you (and Soilent Green is people). They sell profiling information for marketing purposes and who knows what else. I tend to avoid falling for the conspiracy theory crowd, but most users provide with enough information about their habits, purchase prospects, travel plans, etc to dwarf any data mining effort done to date (IMO).

Outrage
Why ,OH Why ?! Oh March Ides, Oh Northern winds , Hear our cry ! Take anything but the Powerful RIM Jobs we love so dearly.........
Here´s looking at you Cahrlie Stross
As someone else mentioned, many alternatives to 3D printing have been explored in Rule34 by Charles Stross and his previous novels (Accelerando bein IMHO his Opera Prima in terms of futurology).
Kudos Charly, you´ve done it again you Magnificent Bastard
Perhaps text could move instead of your peepers?
I would use the fair use defence
Since I own the output media (TV, Monitor, etc.) I would defend my right to be able to display whatever I like on it. Since I am not tempering with the content, simply adding more content on the output I would argue that it is fair use. For instance, PIP (as mentioned by a fellow Reg Reader) and even OSD falls in this category (those lovely menus our currents TV sets use control them).
Nevertheless, I never doubt lawyers to be able to convince people that black is white, red is blue and cows can fly.
The end of Eternity
Hope it is near.....
Creepy
The state government secretary for Putumayo Department is called "Verdugo", Wich translates literally to Executioner. Nice touch.....
Twilight
If I saw one of the cast members, I'd sure as hell run them over and take them out of their misery...
Also...
No subtitles, No embedded comments, etc.... not only Ads guys.
Exactly
My company, facing the fact that most employees would use streaming in some form (and we have to face the fact that a lot of alternatives will be available during the World Cup and it might be overkill to block them all) or just skip work alltogether, came up with the idea of internally hosted streaming. Two cheap computers and an encoding pci card later, and we are now all enjoyin all matches live over the corporate network.
Who is to blame ?
I pin this one down on Ellen, other than Apple. She apologised, she is the weakest link here. For all I care, apple can kiss my beloved bottom if they demand an apology. It's comedy. If they can't handle a parody, perhaps they should not be selling their products to the general public, only Fans.
My thoughts exactly
When I read the bit about having a stack of patents to protect against other players to be able to succeed in the mobile computer market, my spine chilled just a little. I hope it does not come to that, but knowing the habits of the corporate predator.
Reading the titles of the patents makes me wonder: using a mobile computing device to make phone calls. Skype is F**ED then: My netbook does that. And using a vertical support for a portable computer....are you serious ?
I´ll try to patent "Thing that does stuff". If it flies I´ll be rich. Now i Know what came between "Collect underpants" and "Profit" in the gnomes plan.......PATENT !
I hope Google....
grew some inmense set of bollocs and went for Microsoft just for the fun of it. I know it is not likely to happened, but I'd really love to see their faces when someone with deep pockets called their bluff. It really pisses me off to read about how company's use Patent infringment as a means of extorsion
I come from planet Ergaoml 234....
@bennet278: was that what is often described as Sarcasm ? I am yet to understand this form of human humorous expression
I was wondering somthing along those lines
As I read the article one thing kept ringing in my head: is there any actual law they are breaking by punting their (or their paying customers) products ? A good example would be: let's sue any of the major TV networks for showing lame products instead of good ones. Trash-food instead of healthy food. Expensive , polluting cars instead of green ones, etc.Let's face it: They are showing other results , only displaying their offer above others. I honestly think there is no way of contesting this.
Obliviously ,there is no such thing as neutrality when their revenue comes from ads. They punt their Adsense customers over more relevant results because that's what they pay for. If people are predictable and choose the first results they can only be charged of playing the human nature card. It's like any commercial: they highlight the good things about a product, quietly omitting the bad things. Can you imagine if Marketing/Sales/Publicity agencies had to actually say everything good and bad about a product ? Now that's a law i´d like to see passed.
Don't get me wrong: I am scared senseless of Google's power. They can pretty much rewrite history if they commit to do it ! Just pointing out that this is not the way to catch them with their pants down.......
Sanity check
I´ll give it a try and Patent "a system that does one or more things according to instructions indicated by one or more users". If it flies , just about anything is up for grabs !
Seriously, the US legal and patent system should be checked for consistency
@ Steve 70: You sir owe me a keyboard.......
This is Bill's Fault too !
Dear Bill Gates,
you made it "easy" for everyone to use a computer. Now we have to read this. Shame ! Shaaaaaaame on you ! You owe me a new set of eyes and some brain cells.
Best regards,
Rodrigo E. Rollan
PS: Like Homer Jay Simpson once said "If you haven't noticed, I am being SARCASTIC"
That's (NOT) all folks....
that action removes the naoying flag on the left panel. It does not remove Buzz. Actions required to remove the whole thing @: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=171460
Statistics, Shamtistics....
I have tow cents to add here:
The so called Glass Cliff is there for men and woman alike. How many CEOs, PMs, Presidents, etc. have seriously F**D up ? I mean, really, really messed things up , quite publicly. Most of them were men. On the other hand Angela Merkel seems to be THE example this days. She's a woman and doing a great job.
Also, the Alcatel - Lucent merger appointed a female CEO. She F***D that up on her own , you know ? No Glass Cliff lurking there, just poor management.
Not as puzzling...
has anyone read the form you have to fill to enter the US (form I-94W). I quiote:
C. Have you ever been or are you now involved in espionage or sabotage; or in terrorist activities; or genocide; or between 1933 and 1945 were involved, in any way, in persecutions associated with Nazi Germany or its allies?
Ahhhmmm: Yes ? Who would acknowledge this in a freaking form !
In sudafrica, firearms are quite common amongst the population. Some nightclubs have gun lockers !
yes, that and...
why not also add the creative mind behind the ad as well. I also would like the chance to give my warm regards to the bastard that spawned all femenine hygiene, detergent, toothpaste and many other obnoxious ads that predate our daily life. You hate the advertising industry ? would like to kick and ad executive's head ? There's an app for that !
I would have also called...
Jack Bauer.....If someone knows what to do in these situations is him !
Beg to differ @Buenos Aires, Argentina
"Why don't we hear these spotty adolescent rants from mobile phone customers from India, Brazil or Europe (for example). It's not as if the networks corporate governance or market share is so different. You must tell me."
Well I live in Argentina, were we can confirm to pillaging, raping nda other colonial-esque tactics. The fact that people are not commenting on your article in a Uk based site (wich I Love, by the way) does not mean the y don't agree. Carriers are Carriers are Carriers. Given a legal framework they´ll find a way to squeeze as much money out of their customer base as possible.
Great news, Yoru tuition @ work....
She even got a job out of it ! The university employment department should be proud.
Let's say ....
they rule that they can only keep the data for one year. Better yet, a day. WHO's GOING TO CONTROL THE DELETION OF THE DATA !?!?!?!? Really, once they have it, they have it. That's it. No turning back. Whoever believes that this will be a transparent process please send me an email. I have a Bridge to sell, in mint condition .....
RIght !
I forgot NASA got things right ALL THE TIME. Like their latest space ventures. Robots in maars that BSOD on them, etc. Yep.....
Send 'em our way
Dear Surgeons, please send all solicitors our way. We´ll be glad to provide proper testing and certification.
Only, Always in America !
Why is it that whenever we hear of a legal action that defies all common sense it takes place in The United States of America ?
I, for once, hint our litigation-addicted friends to a whole set of profitable targets:
1) All beautiful woman: why do we have to be handsome and/or have a huge stash of money to date them.
2) The church: being that they represent God on earth , they are legal tenders for his biding. Life sucks, they should be accountable.
3) Every manufacturer that dares sell a product that is intended for a specific audience. It's either usable by every single person on earth or we're commin' to getcha !
Seriously, disabilities are not a laughing matter, but I think that some things are not questionable. If this legal action follows suit, then soon enough we´ll have deaf people suing musicians for not making their art available in a suitable format for them. If anyone wants to manufacture a product, they target a certain demography. My humble opinion is that they are not legally bound to please everyone.
Make's me Laugh every single time...
" ....on the Recording Industry Ass. of America's impudent .." Yep, they are asses alright.
Sad
If any other vendor had limited their access to apple devices, you´ll see a lot of Apple users complainign of lack of interoperability. For instance, MICROS**T WMP supports lots and lots of devices. Why itunes only supports apple´s products being one of the main music content providers is beyond me. Noone is demanding support from apple. Palm is providing support for Pre users with itunes (I know this matter of factly). Palm went about it the wrong way, but they are making a point in the fact that providing options is good.
I propose that every vendor locks apple devices out and we´ll see: FAN BOYS,FAN BOYS , WHAT YOU GONNA DOOOO, WHAT YOU GONNA DO WHEN THEY COME FOR YOU.....
YAY !!!!!
Yeah...like the Vendor is going to admin on beating one of their employees to the world + dog. I wonder what the all american Apple Inc will do if they find out that the bbeating actually took place. Will they revert their contract ? will they compensate the family ?
