Chrome celebrates second b-day with sixth release

Mark C Casey

Meaningless version numbering

It used to be that you'd change the major version number to indicate significant changes or a major improvement over the old version. It seems more and more these days Google and others are doing it purely for marketing.

Google's marketing department;

"We've decided to implement some changes in how we increase our major version numbering. We will increase the version number if any of these conditions are met:

* The sun has risen this morning

* Is it a full moon tonight? If so major version change! If not... major version change!

* Are we still behind MSIE in version numbering? Increase the version number!

* Did any of the other browser makers release a nightly, beta, release candidate or a new release? Major version change!

* Is our marketing department full of morons? Major version change!"

And on and on.. Chrome still isn't attractive as a browser (to me at least) its addon system is pretty crappy and the bookmarks system is woeful. Never mind numerous little things like googleupdater etc.

Yahoo! begins ad handover to Microsoft

Mark C Casey

And so..

And so begins Yahoo's march towards mediocrity and irrelevance.

That said, I suppose there's a valid argument they've been mediocre and irrelevant for years. I think the only time I use anything even related tangentially to Yahoo is the iPhone weather app which gets its data from yahoo. Since the beeb revamped their mobile website I tend to use that more (for weather results over the native iphone app) as it usually has better, more accurate and more detailed info.

Mozilla man: Firefox 4 will leapfrog JavaScript rivals

Mark C Casey

It's getting better all the time...

@SilverWare

See http://arewefastyet.com/

That website was created by the Mozilla Javascript team, essentially it's their way of publicly acknowledging that they aren't as fast yet as Chrome/Safari whilst also setting themselves a target of beating Chrome/Safari in JS performance.

I've been using the Firefox betas and nightlies and I can attest that the JS performance has been gradually getting better.

Also, enabling Direct2D and DirectWrite significantly improves drawing performance.

For example (in one of the IE9 tests): http://i.imgur.com/Xlzaa.jpg

And the same test in IE9: http://i.imgur.com/IBaF6.jpg (even if you reduce the window size it still doesn't achieve 60fps)

Disney sued for spying on kids with 'zombie cookies'

Mark C Casey

But..

Adobe: “condemns the practice of using Local Storage to back up browser cookies for the purpose of restoring them later without user knowledge and express consent.”... "But it makes us money, so we'll give lip service to privacy but really not care because we don't want to take away a potential money source of people buying flash tools."

The best tool around to get rid of them is the Firefox addon BetterPrivacy, got it configured to automatically delete all flash cookies after I close Firefox. Apple Safari, Google Chrome etc can hark on all they like about speed but Firefox has the best overall browsing experience with all the best addons.

MS to Kinect up UK in November

Mark C Casey

Allow me be the first to say...

Meh.

Kinect looks to be the most impractical gaming device since the virtualboy. Hate to say this but Sony seems to have gotten theirs bang on, no having to stand up and flail around pointlessly in the hope that image recognition will be able to analyse what you're doing accurately and quickly. (accuracy, speed in processing response time and price.. pick two)

Internet Explorer 9 beta due on September 15

Mark C Casey

WebM

"IE9 will also run Google's open sourced WebM video codec plus the closed and proprietary H.264 from Microsoft, Apple, and others."

Woah there horsey, only if you install the WebM codec downloaded from Google.

@Peter X

If you're after a ad-blocking proxy then I suggest http://www.proxomitron.info/

I used it before ad-blocking was available as an addable feature to the browser.

Mark C Casey

Flashblock

Actually, flashblock is trivially easy to bypass.

See http://secway.org/pr14/flashblock.htm

If you can't innovate, litigate.

Firefox 4 beta 2 preaches tabs-on-top love to fanbois

Mark C Casey
Thumb Up

Most excellent

It's starting to look really good, i've enabled Direct2D and the smoothness of some graphics is really impressive. (think flash smoothness only without the crappy plugin)

Surprisingly the IE9 test demos with Direct2D enabled in FX4 run really well and actually show off FX4 pretty well. Although it's still buggy. (sometimes it won't draw the content of the page so you have to move the window itself to force a draw)

It finally at last has a decent theme for Vista/Win7 without having to resort to Glasser+Personal Menu+Stylish.

The Javascript performance is improving (i'd say about 50% the performance of Chrome).

And viewing just this page in FX4 consumes a total 70MB which is fine by me since my home and work machines have 4GB of RAM.

What happened to 3.6.5?

Just a tad bit odd, are they taking pages out of Microsoft and Googles playbooks?

Firefox takes walk down 64-bit Windows street

Mark C Casey
FAIL

I'll take IE browser history for $50 Alex

"It’s unsurprising to see Mozilla developing its browser to work with 64-bit micro-processing technology, given that Microsoft has moved into that space with its Windows 7 operating system. But it’s also playing catch-up with its rivals in the web surfing game."

*BZZT*

Actually, MS released IE 6 on the 64bit version of Windows XP in both 32bit and 64bit flavours. MS aren't new to the 64bit browser game.

Opera for iPhone: The review

Mark C Casey
Thumb Down

Default search sucks

Because it goes through operas proxy page cruncher Google thinks you're in a nordic country or something..

So a search for "bbc" (for example) results in this: http://imgur.com/pCkZ0.png

You can't change the default away from Google.com so if you want relevant searches by going to say google.co.uk you have to:

1. Press the search box

2. Press the down arrow

3. Scroll down to your manually added Google UK

4. Enter what you want to search for etc.

After a very short amount of time this gets really annoying.

Also, Googles cool iphone type pages don't work on opera mini.

I am referring to this: http://imgur.com/hJ38U.png

Freesat BBC iPlayer beta gets red button access

Mark C Casey

Well..

Good thing I own a Foxsat box, since the only (good quality) method of accessing iPlayer on my tv has been via XBMC which the BBC broke on purpose. (which ironically didn't stop the pirates at all)

Think I'll give it a go tonight, I hope the higher quality streams are available and not the crappy low quality ones you get on the PS3.

BBC iPlayer rejects open source plugins, takes Flash-only path

Mark C Casey

Oh...

I only tested it a little bit with XBMC, apparently it'll work for a while but then it'll fail.

I haven't watched any programs this week on iplayer.

Mark C Casey

I use XBMC here

I use XBMC and the iPlayer plugin seems to be working just fine, I keep my plugins up to date so maybe it has been tweaked.

I just tested it by watching a bit of Dr Who and a couple of the live streams (BBC 1 and News 24) and it worked without a problem.

Anyway, if this does ever affect XBMC they can do what Boxee (a fork of XBMC) do and just use a browser with flash.

Funny thing is I use the iplayer plugin on my XBMC HTPC more than I do watching the tv via my freesat pvr and more than I use iplayer on my desktop or laptop pc. I'd rather watch streamed tv on my 40" HDTV with XBMC at my convenience than having to sit in front of a computer monitor.

Good

I say good, it looks as though the PS3 is now edging past the 360 in terms of monthly sales although not total overall sales. If MS wants to make the 360 look like an even less nicer proposition than the Wii/PS3 then by all means let them go ahead.

I've never liked Live for the precise reason that you're paying for something that is free everywhere else, Live doesn't even give you dedicated servers to play on. You're paying for players hosting the online games.

Don't even get me started on Natal, MS had it good last year but it looks to me like MS has totally lost the plot. They can't seem to decide what to do with the 360, one moment it's "yeah, we're a hard core gaming console!" and the next it's "look! we can be like the wii too!".. jack of all trades master of none.

I'm totally behind the BBC on the iPlayer demand, the iPlayer should not be behind a paywall like Live gold.

If it means making the PS3 even more competitive (iPlayer works surprisingly well on the PS3) then great, hopefully at some point MS will realise their mistake and get rid of the Live charge. (not bloody likely though)

Disclaimer: I owned a Wii and currently own a 360 and PS3.

Microsoft stalks, poaches Apple retail staff

Mark C Casey

@ Tyrunn

So, what you're saying with the well known popularity of the Zune over the iPod that MS are set to win with stores too?

Simple fact is MS has about as much "this is cool, lets buy this" cred as a very smelly wet fish.

Apple has one hell of a lot of credibility with customers/consumers right now. Whenever I hear about any normal (read: non-geek) person buying a music player it's always iPod and never any other brand.

People don't just buy iPod's because of some stupid "oh shiny", they buy them because a. they're actually very good (there's nothing else out there that comes close to an ipod touch) b. they're popular. (see a)

Mark C Casey
FAIL

It'll be great...

For these people getting better wages, at least for the first year. After which point they close the stores because of dismal sales.

Microsoft simply doesn't have the same consumer/customer credibility that Apple does.

OnLive game beta enters public stream

Mark C Casey
Stop

Fun

Nothing says fun like input lag, moving the mouse cursor or pressing a button and waiting for the resultant input to affect the game.. fun!

OnLive could only ever really work over a LAN. Simple fact is that no matter how efficient and quick their encoding and decoding mechanism is, they're still limited by the inevitably packet shaped, crappy home connection that most people are on. Hell, even with a business class ADSL2 line there's still going to be an unacceptably high level of input lag. Good luck trying to play any racing or twitch gaming.

O2 data fails, again

Mark C Casey
FAIL

Yep (Leeds)

I can confirm it, just had a phone call from a sales guy complaining he couldn't connect in to works vpn to check his email.

O2 needs to pull their finger out and sort out these problems, just because O2 sells the iphone doesn't mean we won't move over to another mobile provider.

Firefox 3.7 swivels glassy eye

Mark C Casey

About time

It's about time, Vista has been available how long now? And only just now have they started to take into consideration of making Firefox actually look good under Vista. Up to this point when I've been using Firefox under Vista i've been using the glasser, stylish and personal menu extensions to make it look good rather than the backside of a donkey.

Hell, even Safari which lets face it sucks under Windows has managed to make itself look near native under Vista. Which considering it's an Apple application on Windows is a tad bit surprising.

Wheels come off O2's data network

Mark C Casey

Not here

I'm in Leeds here and it has been flaky all day. Unable to connect in to works VPN on the iphone to check my work email. (I have to use wifi to do that at the moment)

Plus I got a text message from work complaining that they can't connect in to the vpn because all the sales guys use iphones and the vpn to check their email etc.

O2's data network has been pretty flaky the last few months.
