Gone are the days where you had to get specialist appliances and key fobs to enable 2FA, it really is an easy solution and when you run a network that is now used as an authentication system by so many 3rd party services, there is no excuse for not stepping up and offering the more security conscious punters at least an option of using it.

Re: Not square one at all.

If you are the type of parent who lets 3 and 4 year old kids use the internet without any form of supervision then dns is the least of your concerns.

Anigel
Trollface

Changing DNS servers on routers will not stop anyone changing the dns servers used on the local machine to unfiltered ones or indeed just adding an IP address to the hosts file. Two very simple measures that would immediately break your solution.

The same network level filtering operating in schools which every school kid knows how to subvert so they can continue to post rubbish on facebook and other blocked sites as if the block didn't exist. The only workable solution that will 100 prevent kids seeing stuff their parents are not happy with is the parents sitting down with their kids when they use the internet instead of just using the internet as a baby sitter and leaving them to do what they want.

@Geoff Cambell Re: So which is it?

There have been many occasions where topics I understood very well have been covered on the BBC and in every single case there has been a very biased spin put on it which was not justified by the actual facts behind the story. This is why one of the BBC's monikers is the Biased Broadcasting Company, Try it out for yourself. Look for a BBC news story on any topic you understand fully and see how they have spun the story to fit their own agenda

100% would be understating the price rises I am seeing

Considering price rise seen for 2tb units nearly everywhere in the past week or so with units that were on sale for £55 ex vat now on sale for £125 ex vat, I am hard pushed to see how anyone can say 10% price hikes as rises I am seeing are all over 100% unless you are prepared to wait 1 - 2 months for delivery.

opt out?

How can you opt out of something that has been added and turned on by default without any notification at all. Facebook keep making the same mistake over and over again. If you honestly cannot sell your wonderful new feature to me enough to make me turn it on then you need to ask if you should be including it in the first place, let alone forcing it down my throat and telling me sometime later that I could have opted out of something you never told me about if I didn't want it.

Anigel
FAIL

This is a title

As most kids are much more tech savvy than the parents anyway, any locally installed software solution is doomed to failure, just like any network level solution will be defeated by anyone interested in seeing something they shouldn't. All of my nephews mates knew how to get to any site they wanted from the school IT classrooms despite most of the sites they were using being blocked at the network level.

Already have a choice

Parents already have a choice which is telling their kids not to click on something. Kids should not be let lose on the internet without adult supervision. The internet is not a baby sitter and I am sure that you wouldn't let your kids wander around any city doing whatever they want and talking to anyone they see without you so why on earth would you let them do it online.

mandatory subject goes ehre to stop the sytem complaining

Once an xbox has had an RROD repair it is much more likely to suffer the same fault again. Microsoft may now offer an extended warranty for RROD but that was not always the case and it very far from the only dead console issue they suffer. I am saying that as someone who has a ps3 and xbox so I am not just biased against the xbox

Anigel
Mushroom

Duplicates

The main difference is that you don't have to keep buying the same console over and over again with Sony as they keep dying from various design flaws like they do with the xbox. I know people on their third or fourth 360 where they died due to RROD or other issues

Remember

There are more deaths amongst coal miners in a single year than there have been directly caused by nuclear energy in the past 60 years. Much like you are more likely to die in an accident on the way to the airport than one in the airplane, yet people just love to worry about the daftest things. and they try to use any excuse to show that they are right to worry about it. I would suggest those people use precautionary principle and stay in bed in case something happens, but then again as more people die in bed than anywhere else, where does that leave you?

More like approves silent calls.

Ofcom hereby gives permission for every company the UK to make one silent call per number per day without any penalty. Companies from outside the uk are of course welcome to continue making as many silent calls as they wish and can continue to ignore the TPS

There is no need for silent calls if an agent is not available do not call out.

easy fix - wrecks usability

Google has had the option to give a username and pasword for accessing protected content on your site for ages now.

On the other had It used to really pee me off when I had to go through several sites before I could actually access the information without having to go through signups and validations even on free sites! So instead of the signup to see this post link the back button always got hit and webmasters really need to look into the amount of visitors they are losing by insisting on signups on non premium sites

Its got to the point now where if there is no cache link on the google search result then I do not even bother clicking it as they are normally hiding content behind logins etc

Anigel
Flame

Its all a joke anyway

Until parents are forced to give a flying "File System ChecK" about what their kids are doing then these labelling systems are just used as a shopping list of things a game must contain for them to want it.

The sort of parents that would happily let a 12 year old have a clearly 18 rated game are not going to be bothered if it has a icon meaning violent on it or not

And do not forget that with the police trawling through the oyster db at will looking for people to blame for every crime, like protesting against the gordonment, thinking for yourself, saying the government is anything less than god etc, if they accept anyone can clone a card will mean that their little data mine is worthless, I just hope there is a big enough stink about this that everyone learns the cards can be cloned and this police misuse of the oyster db is stopped by being laughed out of court whenever it is used / attempted

It is much more likely that your ISP will utliise its rights under its ts&cs to update its ts&cs to hide some phrase in there that could just about possibly if you view it with a very highly dubious definition of stadard terms mean they can use phorm and that by not blowing up their head office you agree and opt in to this wonderful public service.

If that is the case then you been phormd

opt in should mean no spin and informed implicit opt in.

Prevention

Of course ID cards, a DNA database containing every single person in the country and 10 CCTV cameras per mile would have prevented this.

Anigel

Clarifications.

Dynamic IPs are not actually that dynamic. In this day and age of routers and cable modems, you keep the same dynamic IP addreses unless you leave the power off on your router / cable modem at the time the lease on the IP address runs out. Depending on the ISP's config the lease can last for days or hours. I personally have had the same Dynamic IP for well over a year. If you are on old skool dialup then you normally got a different IP every time you dialed in but in most cases now the same ip address shared by many people in the same day / week doe snot happen anywhere near as frequently as it used to.

As for ISPs having to pay for IP addresses, well actually no they dont. There is an administration fee for each new assignment and there is the time taken to fill out the RIPE form showing justification for why a tiny company needs 10 million IP addresses (mainly to try and make the dwindling pool of IPv4 addresses last) but there is no X pound per IP fee imposed onto ISPs

To all the evangelists

There has been biblical fire and brimstone cast down upon the non believers here, without the radical evangelists actually taking a second to consider the position of anyone but thier "scientifically proven" bible of MMGW.

Anyone who posts something negative to each new and increasingly alarmist finding is immediately branded with negative terms like denier rather than positive ones like thinker or investigator after all much better to believe the world is still flat rather than investigate the opposite of the accepted position.

Just because someone is not afraid to speak out against the alarmism used in publication or the whole man is driving climate change argument, does not mean that they deny any form of climate change. In fact I firmly believe climate change is a natural phenomenon which is happening and is very real but the impact man could have on the issue, short of destroying 50% + of the human population or going back to live in caves is just about negligable and is certainly less than the margin of error applied to all the existing alarmist findings.

I think the following open letter to the UN signed by 100 of the worlds top scietists including heads of climate research departments and many other real scientists sums up my position quite nicely. http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/reprint/open_letter_to_un.html

Basically stop wasting all this time and money on more and more alarmist ways to blame mankind for the natural climate cycle of our planet and start researching ways to live with natural climate change.

So to all the people branding me as a denier, my advice would be to stop being such a sheep and do a little investigation yourself. Once you start to read beyond the index page of the MMGW bible you will see there is very little actual science and a lot of faith (ie belief without proof)

"In stark contrast to the often repeated assertion that the science of climate change is "settled," significant new peer-reviewed research has cast even more doubt on the hypothesis of dangerous human-caused global warming. But because IPCC working groups were generally instructed (see http://ipcc-wg1.ucar.edu/wg1/docs/wg1_timetable_2006-08-14.pdf) to consider work published only through May, 2005, these important findings are not included in their reports; i.e., the IPCC assessment reports are already materially outdated."

@Mark

I find the comment about the uneducated layman to be a major proof of the lack of your scientific method.

You have done zero research into me or my education so to assert that I belong in this group is a massive shortfall in your educated position.

Try this for scientific method.

We already have evidence that the planet has already recovered from situations far worse than predicted so therefore the whole NEVER RECOVER position is fundamentally flawed.

I am sure you can apply scientific method to that and see the flaws without me hitting you with a cloo by four

Anigel
Flame

tipping points

The planet would never recover if these "scientists" let the science do the talking instead of preaching doom and gloom and playing the government sponsored terror card (we will terrify you into submission).

I frankly do not believe a single word any "scientist" says if they rely on trying to scare the pants off people to get the message across.

All they are scared of is the money stopping flowing to them.
