Not Surprising

"the site still faces the problem of a decline in the number of footsoldiers willing to edit the site for free."

Given how snobbish and egotistical some of the Wikinazis can be, I'm not surprised. I saw a note on a page recently basically stating the content of a page about a computer game was given in the form of a fictional account. No sh*t, Sherlock.

And Rightly So

"I am concerned that any exploit made public will be blocked by Apple - this competition is run by a security company."

I'd rather security issues are fixed than a bunch of 1337 haxx0rs get to jailbreak their phones. Don't get me wrong, I'm considering jailbreaking my Touch, but security should not be compromised for any reason, and certainly not for jailbreaking. Apple have a duty to secure their kit and the jailbreakers have to deal with that.

Jobs Halo

Yawn

"The themes that have been floated truly reflect what people have been looking for years and it will change the way people think about PCs and the way they use them. It is the future of PCs..."

More vapid guff, with no substance. As usual with Microsoft marketing BS, it contains much but says nothing. "Change the way people think about use PCs" What? What does that even mean?

I'll stick with an OS that already does what I've been looking for for years, rather than wait for Redmond to try and catch up. Again.

Gates Should Pipe Down

Gates just wishes he'd done it. Remember the prediction of Tablet PCs being the dominant device by 2005? And the best we have is Steve Ballmer's prototype photo-frame PC, that he couldn't even use, in 2010.

The 'tards on here might not like Apple kit, but Apple did it first and they did it better, and it just bites, doesn't it? See you when everyone else catches up!

1) The operators can't see the person who is walking into the scanner, thereby can't know if it's a celeb and worth finding their phone, selecting the camera function, aiming, focusing and snapping a pic before it disappears (I know, I know.... "HOW DO WE KNOW they can't see the person?")

2) The machines can be put into a test mode - that is where the example images for media consumption come from.

Both of these facts have been widely reported and are easily available to those who can see their screens through their industrial-strength tin-foil hats.

I'm not sure about these machines either, but there's just so much BS being talked here.

Too Expensive

Thanks to Ballmer ramping up netbook prices using Windoze, these things are just too damn expensive. A full laptop is around the same price - not as small, but way more powerful. This should be £200.

And where's the Linux version? Presumably a casualty of the deal between netbook makers and the aforementioned overweight bane of the IT industry.

Mozilla overlooked malware-laced Firefox add-ons

Bilgepipe
FAIL

Hahaha

"I'm sure the reason that the viruses targetted Windows is because it's just not worth bothering writing viruses for Mac OS or Linux, there are more Windows users so it makes sense to target that OS."

Oh, "you're sure?" They target Windows because it's the weakest, most insecure OS ever. The whole "market share=viruses" idea is bunk, perpetuated by Windows apologists who can't accept the truth - their OS sucks like a Dyson.

Bilgepipe
FAIL

Fail

Mozilla have made the same blunder Microsoft did with Windows 2000 and onwards - adding certified plugins only as trusted is not enforced. I can add any old plugin I like no matter where it came from, without it being certified, just by ignoring the warning about untrusted add-ons. In a few years Mozilla will make add-ons certified-only - just like Microsoft did with Vista and its drivers - in an attempt to clear up the global security mess they created themselves. Hilarity will ensue.

Don't just learn by your mistakes, learn by the mistakes of others.

Dear Adobe: It's time for security rehab

The Prius has a "software clash" between the braking system and the regenerative braking system, as admitted by Toyota. The problem can be overcome by "braking harder." (A symptom of letting a computer control the brakes, I suppose - that can only end badly)

Bilgepipe

Absolutely Right(tm)

Adobe has a security problem on the scale of Microsoft's back in the even-worse old days. As long as they keep denying it the exploits will keep coming.

As for Flash, they be better served just dropping it altogether, it's had its day. No-one needs it any more. But if they do end up repairing it, how about getting shot of those long-term cookies while they are at it?

Inside Microsoft's innovation crisis

Bilgepipe
Gates Horns

But....

"One [Microsoft's] strengths...has been in taking an existing idea and making it work better"

But they *don't* make them work better. Microsoft produces mediochre clones of other peoples' innovation and uses its market dominance to force them into place. Was Office "better" than PerfectOffice? No, not really, but by secretly tying Office into Windows in a way no-one else could, they forced competitors out of the picture. That, despite, Bill Gates' never-ending proclamations, is not innovation.
