But Solaris 10 will run on that iron for many years ahead and will be updated as well.

The fail is on your side

If you have spent more time on following what happend to OpenSolaris than on just complaining, you would know that you can find an open Solaris download at http://openindiana.org/download/

And Solaris 11 is downloadable at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/downloads/index.html

Money

Didn't you read the first reply? It's all about money.

Thin client rules

Thin clients are not about HW price but maintaining the infrastructure. And if you've ever worked in a Sun Ray environment you'll hate personal PC as the plague.

Re: Another Mike

I agree to what you write, but I also think you can add Oracle/Sun to your list of preferred vendors.

McNealys big mistake

Yes, one of the big mistakes Scott did was giving up Solaris on x86. That gave Linux the space it never deserved.

RE: Dress code?

That's only in the UK. They required a full three piece suit to enter some office areas not to offend higher management there. Note that Scott always wore jeans...

Finally

So, how hard was it really to figure out that MySQL and Oracle are in different parts of the playground? It's only Monty that hasn't got it, but he never will...

Linux too

And when you're at it, drop Linux for Solaris as well.

RE: Matt

Hi Matt, what exactly did your comments add to the conversation?

@Tim99

There's not necessarily any virtualization overhead in Unix, at least not with Solaris containers/zones. It can be quite useful, especially if you sell capacity to different customers. Not so nice to run them all in the same OS instance...

Wrong guys for the job

Why not hire the guy who once said about TCP/IP coding: 'It's very simple — you read the protocol and write the code.'

Scared to death?

@Scott K. Handy; When a VP from IBM make comments on ElReg he must be really scared of what's coming from the competitors.

SCO could as well drop it all as UNIX is already out in the free by Sun...
