Re: Halifax are another bunch with ****ing vivaldi....

I think Halifax phone banking is great. The trick is not answering when they ask you to say what you want. Dial the phone banking no. (03457 20 30 40), key in your account code, sort code and the 2 digits they ask for from your pin, then press *0. Wait till it starts to say something, press *0, wait again, last *0 then all you'll hear is a phone ringing till they answer. Most they've kept me waiting is about 3 minutes but normally it's less than a minute. And the call centre's in the UK.

Indeed, but it's equally naive to think that you can incentivise staff to care about fraud when they're worried about whether the electricity will be on when they get home.

As usual, the situation is complex and solutions like "pay more" or "care more" aren't very helpful.

Re: In short

The Google Planty strikes again.

No, of course it's not news. Google just enabled the play store to grant permissions for apps so I don't have to approve them at install time. Saves me a whole load of time reading permissions screens and trying to understand them.

Thanks Google, I trust you implicitly with the security of my device. If you think an app should be granted some permissions on my phone then that's good enough for me!

It's on kickstarter, not Amazon. They've funded the development of the project. That's not the same as ordering a product off the shelf.

If they don't understand the difference then who's to blame? Should we ban crowdfunding sites because some people don't understand how they work?

Hmm, kind of, but would you buy a door with a lock that worked with any key, or a car that just started when someone got into it? There comes a point where you're actively encouraging people to abuse your stuff....

If your device is configured so anyone saying "OK Google" activates it then how can you complain when someone says "OK Google" and it's activated? Are you saying that people shouldn't be allowed to say "OK Google" around google stuff? It's a slippery slope if we allow Google to take control of our mouths.

re: End this insanely illiberal tax now.

It's almost like the goverment want crapita employed to do this to encourage outrage at this "illiberal tax".

I pay tax towards all sorts of services that I don't currently use, that doesn't make those taxes illiberal. I don't see the BBC as any different. Re: It sounds like the old Windows cruft idea

It does sound like that but my old Android had slowed up loads over the course of 2 years and I seldom install apps, or update the ones I have. As well as slowing down the phone is also getting buggier (it keeps dropping the music player from the lock screen now, a feature I've used since I got the phone but which has become flaky in the last 3 months.)

I've got nothing useful to add about how Android gets in this state, but in my experience (with my phone and the kids phones) Android degrades with use irrespective of how much you install.
