Shall we have AI judging UK court cases? Top beak ponders the future

Re: Anything that eliminates lawyers is a good thing in my book

By that logic, the US should be the most just country in the world, having 1 lawyer to every 1.6 people in prison. New Brunswick must be a veritable police state compared with New York, having only 1/8th the number of lawyers per capita.

@MGL

"you essentially need multiple parties who wish to transact with each other who do not currently have a trust relationship with eachother. Getting enough of those people in a room together to work together"

|I need this spelled out, there is only a point to blockchain if people who don't trust each other (or an intermediary) want to do business AND to get them to use blockchain they need to work together to agree on that? Surely if they're in the same room working on the problem, whoever assembled them can act as trusted intermediary?

Re: Blockchain tutorials

No, or at least not in a way that would make you pay for it.

As far as I can tell (and I could be wrong) it's a way of packaging data so that it can be verified as uncompromised while allowing you to add records to it, a distributed database relying on good encryption and cross checking multiple sources. I haven't been able to think of any use for it that can't be done more easily another way either.

HMRC: 30 months to prep Northern Ireland backstop systems, 24 for customs

Ken 16 Silver badge
Paris Hilton

so has Ireland

well, half the expected total, since the government are still hoping a withdrawal agreement will give another 18 months to recruit the remainder. Funding is there to expand the ports and airports customs areas. Why wouldn't the UK get these things sorted before declaring their exit?

The customs union 'deep end' governing Northern Ireland can't be changed without EU agreement but the 'shallow end' covering Great Britain can be changed unilaterally, which is what the DUP are worried about.

That's the spirit, Mr AC. Soon you and your fellow South Britons will be driving around in your C5's, knocking up spiffing apps on your Amstrads and laughing at the Scots farmers for wanting to stay in business rather than eat new Zealand lamb like the English. Pretty soon the UK economy will be back to it's condition in the 1970's, with rocketing inflation, sterling in freefall and the IMF bailing it out, like the good old days!

Trivia

Scottish Notes aren't legal tender, even in Scotland. Neither are NI notes. They're promissory notes and the banks hold the same value of Bank of England notes to meet those promises. The BoE prints million and hundred million pound notes to let them do that. English banks did print notes but a change in the law stopped new banks from doing it and the old ones merged or went out of business.
