So despite all that is said ......
...... it is still a pc in a small box, like a Shuttle pc, that have been around for years and years.
Will stick to regular pc with raid thanks.

....... the biggest boss was asking me about Office 363, and this is why I love Microsoft. When a techy needs help saying migrating to it at this time would be bad for us they create a service failure to back me up.
Keep it up MS, and ignore these guys as they still haven't worked out you are secretly helping us.
There I was expecting to be proven wrong about Xbox CGI adverts, and you show me a Rage tech demo (which like me, anyone who bought the game knows that isn't the game engine, as half the screen isn't covered in glitches, tearing and the other half missing its texture map) and a demo for Unreal Engine 4 (which while I admit was awesome, Unreal Engine 3 looked damn good when it was demonstrated too).
Your worst crime was making me think about Rage again, having played Id games since Wolfenstein 3D all those years ago I thought Doom 3 would be the game that disappointed me the most but then they released Rage, a £35 30GB download for something that wasn't even fit for beta. Shame on you sir.
..... the PS4 with the Xbox One. So far, and on satellite channels there are at least 2 per break, the only 'not in game footage' I have seen on an xbox advert is Ryse. All of the other use game footage. The only PS4 ad I have seen is pretty much an amalgamation of numerous titles in a semi live action advert which is pure CGI.
...... it lets me play Forza 5 without any issues I will gladly wait for the rest. As I get accused of being an MS fanboy I used to love Gran Turismo, it was the reason I bought a PS1 and 2, but in the end the license crap at the start of the game just removed the fun aspect of the game (Games are supposed to be fun aren't they?). Tried Forza 3 and bought a 360 on the back of it. For me it has the perfect balance between arcade and sim and an awesome community.
So for some of us, there is one must have title that requires a day one purchase.
"When was it required by law that to have children you have to be technologically literate enough to set this software* up correctly?"
Since 1989, as I mentioned the Childrens Act. The section regarding parental responsibility. Succinctly summed up as:
"Parental Responsibility is defined by the Children Act 1989 as being all the rights, duties, powers and responsibility which a parent of a child has in relation to the child and his or her property. It includes rights and duties with regard to education, choice of religion, administration of a child’s property and choice of residence."
As for software, most routers have the ability to block either sites by address or by keyword. A google search will tell you that.
As a child I did many things I shouldn't have, but for the part of my childhood I had parents they didn't expect the government to inflict blanket measures affecting all of society because of something I did. My brother and I once found an adult magazine under a hedge when I was about 6 and I certainly don't remember all adult magazines being removed from sale because of that.
Education before legislation.
...... be on or off. Then select the level required.
I wish there was a concise list of all of the 'scaremongering because they are too stupid to monitor their own kids' groups that have been lobbying for this, so I can invoice them for the time I have to spend turning this crap off.
If you can't be bothered to put in place software or rules to protect your children on the net you shouldn't have had them. The Childrens Act 1989 means we should have never have got to this point, there is no need because as a parent you are required by the state to be doing this yourself, already.
..... statement.
"working around the clock with our security experts to get to the bottom of this and to further enhance our security in order to protect our valued customers"
If you valued your customers then you wouldn't store information about them that you aren't supposed to. Also in reference to the term 'security experts' you have spelled muppets incorrectly.
...... to see the new tv advert for the iPad Air, pretty much making it out to be more important than the invention of the pencil, which to me was invented the first time someone used charcoal to make a mark on a cave wall ('It's been into space' Well so has a human turd, but NASA don't box them up, charge people £700 for them and call it revolutionary).
So after seeing that magnificent display of hubris I now HAVE to see the advert for the watch. 'iWatch, you were all still fecking protoplasm until we made this'.
Actually I remember anonymous from when WE were trying to expose Scientology, and WE had good reason to be anonymous. Totally different creature from the anonymous today.
I have to admit my knowledge of a bunch of bullying net users (attacking innocent traders is bullying) isn't that great though.
@Mr Jack (put your hands up, get out of the car.)
I am soooooo sorry I did not give you a list of all of the consoles I currently own. So I take it as a writer of many fanboy comments you are actually in first school right now?
Well just to make you feel better here is a list of console I have that still operate and that are used occasionally
3DO (Yes I was one of the few)
N64
PS One
PS2
Nintendo Wii
Xbox 360
Xbox One (soon)
A few gaming PC's too
Actually looking at that list right there I would find it hard to claim I am a particular fan of any platform, for me it says I am a fan of gaming, and I purchase the device that will have the games I want to play.
Because Sony never reduced the functionality of devices through updates once released did they?
Disclaimer: While the poster is the owner of an xbox 360 and will soon be the owner of the xbox one this statement was added for the sake of balance. How I used to look forward to PSP updates as it was great for the 'What will Sony disable next' bingo.
@Gav it's not really like that though is it. Sky Broadband runs over BT equipment, so if Sky signs up 1 million customers a year BT gets a chunk of money from those 1 million customers.
I thinks it is quite nice that BT have managed to find almost £1.5bn in the last couple of years for such tribalistic entertainment when they were begging the government for £2bn to roll out fibre across the country.
...... so why no video/photo editing tests on the Haswell chip? Or is it a case of if you want to use it for what most Pros have been bought for previously (location editing), you just have to stump up for the most expensive model with a mid range graphics chip?
If Lenovo wise up and throw a decent display at the Thinkpad W coupled with a Quadro they could start biting into Apples market on the top end.
..... any other market factors? Did any of their clients have promotions tied into the release of the new iPad causing extra downloads/app usage? What were their client numbers when the 4 went on sale and the numbers when the Air went on sale? A wholly useless graph without context.
The law is a framework, and while it does include specific sections just because it is not specific in other areas does not mean you can't be prosecuted under that law.
Seriously though, you are an AC and an idiot. Downvote me all you like but please just STFU.
AC's selecting selective facts to prove a point?
Did you even read the page you link to? The bit that says it is an offence
(1)Where a classification certificate issued in respect of a video work states that no video recording containing that work is to be supplied to any person who has not attained the age specified in the certificate, a person who supplies or offers to supply a video recording containing that work to a person who has not attained the age so specified is guilty of an offence unless the supply is, or would if it took place be, an exempted supply
The bit that says how you may get away with it
(a)that the commission of the offence was due to the act or default of a person other than the accused
I will dumb it down for you as that seems to be required.
My original entry, knowing that it was intended for the child, I could not use that defense.
If the parent came up with the item, bought it then toddled off and handed it to little Jimmy then I am in the clear.
While you can google I actually did the job for a number of years and had to attend the Trading Standards office when one of my co-workers got caught selling to underage kids. A few times. So I know how they find ways to prosecute you.
As for the alcohol posting, learn your legislation before posting to the internet. As it is perfectly legal for someone who is 16 to be served with alcohol in a pub in certain circumstances, or it was when I took my licensing exam (passed, full marks, it is really easy).
My new term for stupid people will be AC from now on.
....... play and watch 18 rated media. When working in retail I don't think a week went by without an argument with a parent because I refused to sell them an 18 game or video. I tried explaining that as their child had picked it up, brought it to the counter and said 'This is the one I want' it was still illegal for me to sell it as I knew it was intended for someone under that age.
Most parents simply don't give a shit, if it shuts the kid up it is acceptable. What I found deplorable was they didn't even look at the item. My son is 11 and I occasionally let him watch a 15 film, but within reason (and to be honest if the Monty Python films were resubmitted today they would likely get a 12A) and its something I have seen and deemed acceptable.
I admit I was tempted sometimes. 'You want your 8 year old watching Event Horizon? Sure .... why not, won't be me losing sleep'.
..... the story but it has made me think about something. These celebrities that constantly post on twitter and instagram have large teams of staff because they are literally incapable of doing simple things for themselves (changing a lightbulb, phoning a plumber etc etc), yet they do seem adept at using technology to post pictures of (b)anal crap. How is it they can master that yet not the simple things in life?
Actually, realised while typing that I have the answer ...... twitter et al is used for shameless constant self promotion .... something these guys are zen masters at.
I think its probably because the boot and bonnet would be easier to replace .... and also check for damage. A low speed impact could cause fractures that would not be picked up in even a detailed check. I doubt you would want a chassis issue making itself known at 70mph on the motorway as it tends to shatter more than snap.
....... heuristic means a number of things, all slightly different but grouped by the main definition, trial and error. Reading the patent application with that in mind makes it one dumb document.
And by Apples definition it looks like it means interpretation, and they have been granted a patent on that. So have they been handed a patent covering pretty much every possible thing that can be done on a touchscreen device? Seeing as every time you touch the screen software interprets that touch into an action.
Or do I just need a little more caffeine before looking at the complete mindf**k that patents are?
Right Whingers? If I had to define my political stance I would have to say I am right of centre yet I fully believe in personal responsibility, unlike those left of centre who prefer someone else to make the decisions. So my stance would be legalise it and let grown adults make their own decisions, like with alcohol, they are free to pickle their livers with Kestrel Super if they so wish. Odd that.
Junkies stealing the crop? How many stories do you see of health nuts raiding organics vegetable producers? If it was legalised I am sure it would be grown in a very secure location.
.... I can't wait for the day El Reg stops letting AC's comment. AC's on forums are now basically the equivalent of the morons that scrawl on phone boxes, usually nothing to add to the subject and what they do add is makes you weep for the future of mankind.
'Sales have bombed' is a rather stupid statement as they haven't sold 1 yet, they are currently being pre-ordered. Of those pre-orders the majority have been fully allocated, and due to demand MS have had to delay the release in a number of EU countries in order to cope with demand. I have to admit the marketing teams for both MS and Sony are stating to pre-order if you want the chance of getting one before Christmas but they usually do that anyway.
So finally, for the sake of us all on these boards, create a login, makes it easier to spot the stupid posts by just looking at names.
Before I am downvoted off of the planet please at least consider my point.
All of the gains that Valve claims the Linux version will give, such as the increase in frame rates, will most likely be wasted and therefore quite pointless. They are with my current monitor so moving to a TV which is not as responsive or capable seems and even bigger waste. Why push for 120fps on a TV that can only manage 30fps (60fps interleaved)? I know some people will will have the latest spec of tv, but not everyone and when pushing for presence in the living room they need to find a better way of selling it.
Just consider both PS4 and Xbox One are crowing about running 60fps @ 1080p
..... miss XP, in regards to enterprise for me it has made my life quite easy. Group policies worked well with it, much better than Vista and when it had issues they were relatively simple to fix. XP served as my main home OS (Long time PC gamer .... since my 286) until Win 7 came out. I wish Win 8 was just the Win 7 GUI with 8's improvements but it looks like that will never happen, so I will be enjoying 7 for a good while longer.
And please don't give me any switch to SteamOS crap because of gaming, I will still need a Windows pc to stream my games from.
..... lose my love of physical media, simply because of the memories that can become attached to it. Queuing up outside HMV on the day GnR released the illusion albums, the first time my crappy little stereo was pushed to its limits by having When The Worm Turns by FNM played loud and often, and even recently the 20th anniversary box set of RATM first album box set was just like buying it again for the first time (it also cost more than I earned in a week when I first bought it).
Music has been a big part of my life and listening brings up the bad memories as well as good. Even though my life has involved numerous house moves, a divorce and all the other crap that life throws at you I still have all of my vinyl, a box of cassettes and numerous cd's. It has been the one constant in my life. Discovering music before the online age was a totally different beast, it actually required time and effort so seemed to be savored more.
It just makes me sad that my son won't experience it the same way I did.
A fubar upgrade of OSX on a slot loading macbook put me off them for life. Wouldn't complete the upgrade, and kept rebooting, seeing the disk and trying to run the upgrade again. Refused to obey the eject key and my universal cd-rom ejection tool (paperclip) could not save me. Took almost a day to get the damn disk out.
...... but as someone with over 100 games on Windows Steam it does not seem likely I will make the change, as to play my current catalogue of titles I will need still a Windows PC on in order to stream them to a SteamOS box. I will probably end up dual booting the spare PC to give it a test.
Then again I have always liked the separation of PC and console gaming, they are different beasts and I am a gamer of both worlds. I prefer the PC for FPS, MMO and strategy games, and the console for driving, arcade and when mates are around guitar hero type games.
As I said at the beginning, will wait and see but as I will still need a windows PC in order to make use of the games I already own it has made me cautious about getting too excited about the announcement.
If you think AMEX don't do charge cards anymore then you have never met the owner of the Black variety. Lets just say if you are a retailer and someone presents you with one you should be very very nice to them.
Got a bollocking off a manager for spending 30 mins chatting to a customer once, he shut up after I showed him the receipt and informed him of the payment method.
..... straight away, as most of the time an AMEX charge (not credit card charge) is usually a 'he is good for it' promise. If Oracle refuted the bill then the payment will not have been made.
AMEX corporate charge cards are likely to be used as alternative to cash, so senior staff don't have to make large withdrawals from banks when contemplating spending the night at such an establishment, therefore the liability will be with Oracle. If it wasn't then the suit should not have made it this far.
I have never seen the value in paying money just to drink cheap booze and end the night sexually frustrated, that's what marriage is for.
