Apple uncloaks deep details of its 11 iPad apps

Dont see the PC world coming up with anything?

They did, been selling for six months now. Called the Archos 9. Not the prettiest machine in the world but it works just as well as most netbooks on the market.

Remember, Apple didn't develop better products when Jobs came back, they just got a better marketing department.

Was there a mention in the story that the people featured in the videos were remotely attractive?

Imagine if the video starlets were John McCririck and Anne Widdicombe, I would want a hell of a lot more than a tenner for being subjected to that. As for watching them all, cmon people....we all would because we all have our morbid side :|

Microsoft: Oracle will take us back to 1970s hell

Happy

When he said tie-in......

...... i dont think he meant solaris, or the AMP stack, or even open solaris. I think he was reffering to just Oracle. Would you buy hardware that would only run an Oracle DB?

Would rather you have 10 ldom servers running mysql in one piece of tin or would you prefer Oracle charging you per core (not socket) for their bloated DB. Knowing how much Ellison likes his bonuses they might even start charging per thread.

With Linux and Solaris x86 you have an alternate choice to anything Sun/Oracle have to offer. Every OS has its place ...... except OSX :D

Archos 9

Eradicate all BB entrants

he he he

I have used one, while not speedy it is quite good. And with Win 7 Home or Pro on it the windows keyboard makes life much better.

As for Michael C's statement, did Archos murder your Ma and molest your Pa? Is your keyboard in pieces now? Can you see your monitor through that thick film of spittle that will be covering it? Has that fecking huge vein in your forehead stopped throbbing now?

iPad

- Can you change the OS if you dont like it? No.

All that needs to be said on that one.

Finally, its not an iPad copy, nor is it jumping on the bandwagon. Archos just waited for Win 7 to come out as they started shipping these last October. If they had used Vista the early birds would still be booting theirs.

Microsoft tests show no Win 7 battery flaw

lalalalalalalalalalala i cant hear you

first off @ AC who thinks Win7 is horrible, why the hell are you blaming it for Access issues? Secondly ...try running it on something better than a Cyrix welded to a pc chips board.

Now for the serious stuff. Laptops manufacturers have been classing batteries as 'consumables' for years. Consumable means they want you to buy at least a few over the life of the product they are put in. I remember when Dell launched the updated D series Latitudes .... feck your were lucky to have a battery that lasted 6 months and then when you reported the thing was dead they wanted you to buy a new one. Took hours of shouting to get it replaced under warranty. Any new battery is now designed to last just over a year so you have to buy a new one.

As for the whiners, learn about the equipment you are using. If you charge from less than 30% (i think) while using the laptop you may as well pop it out and take a lump hammer to it. As some of the later posters have pointed out, run the laptop until the battery is fully discharged, then plug in the psu and leave it powered off until the battery is charged. Doing this once a month will make the battery last longer.

Dont blame MS for the poor implementation of hardware technology by the manufacturers.

I havent said anything for months.......

As for asking Ofcom and the rest, if any do provide an answer either way they will leave themselves open to a serious thrashing from the EU. If they say no then they will be forced to take BT and Phorm to task, if they say yes then the European courts will invite them to tea and a huge fine.

Adobe sounds off on iPad's Flash slap

Eradicate all BB entrants

openstandards this, JS that, HTML5 whatever....

God you web developers are a bunch of girls. 'Oooooh flash is dead because Apple doesnt support it. This might force people to start coding to new standards so in a few years flash wont be as widespread on the net as it is now'. Great....you hear that guys?....run out and spend $800 on a device that will allow you to see most of the internet in at least 2 years.

Are you the same bunch of lazy arsed, copy/pasting, shortcut using morons who slagged off MS for trying to get their browser closer to your so called wonderful open standards because it meant you might have to do some work and recode your IE6 optimised sites?

Listen kids, we, the people who build server farms for multi-site hosting, fix things, provide solutions to REAL problems actually understand how computers operate. We know that the reason the website doesnt work isnt because the server has run out of disk space, its because the developers crappy PHP script is trying to load 2TB of modules when its called.

Web developers will always blame the technology and not their own abilities (You Firefox/Opera users will understand). Actually I should admit I use that excuse when it comes to Dell kit. In a few years we will see them slagging off h264 or whatever the popular tech is at the time. Web development is about trying to obtain maximum reward for minimum effort.

As for the iPad, it just fills a hole that was never there so I suppose it could be called a lump. It will sell of course as they have again taken someone elses ideas and made it idiot proof. OSX users should be worried though, the iPhone OS ands App store look like the beta for OS11. Any graphics workers out there care to run 1 CS app at a time?

As someone who has worked in the industry....

...let me make one thing clear

The BPI, Distributors and labels have never ever had the rights of the artists in mind. They never will......line them all up in front of me and I will happily call them all liars to their faces. Do you know why they want these measures to stop people abusing the artists rights by not paying for the work?

Because it is their job to abuse the rights of the artists, they have been doing it for over 50 years and they do not want to change. What we should be doing is monitoring all cases of fines for file sharing then asking the organisations to prove the money reclaimed has gone to an artist. I guarantee that not one on this planet will be able to show a direct link between reclaimed money and a payment to an artist.

For most of us this has never been about getting stuff for free, it has been about stopping private corporations having the right to abuse our human rights.

We have a government that refuses to take the advice of accredited, respected scientists yet will happily destroy our freedoms after a free lunch on a yacht.

If the BPI really wants to help artists why dont they create a content delivery system, similar to Steam, that the artists themselves can populate and directly benefit from. They wont......because they have never represented artists.....just the companies that continue to abuse them.

As for AC@16:54 ... welcome to the Reg Mandy

I would have been happy with the craiglist people holding amateurish board meetings and not being able to do more than the basics in powerpoint.

Why?

Because it shows they use their brains for something more than holding useless meetings to make stupid decisions (dont forget the free buffet that costs more than the average workers monthly salary) about things they dont know while feeling smug about making a graph appear on a projector.

Govt promises unemployed free laptops, net access, websites

To those....

.....who are unfortunately unemployed. Since April? Asda not hiring? No one looking for short term contractors? Last time I was made redundant I took on shitty 4 week contracts paying little more than minimum wage instead of signing on, the time before that I worked stacking shelves in a supermarket.

I know the type, stacking shelves is beneath them but crawling out of their pit once a week to sign for a hand out isnt?

As an employer I would pick the shelf stacker.

Then again I also think that income tax should be used for its original purpose, to pay for the wars we fight. Imagine Bin Laden's face when 3 million chavs turn up in the foothills of Afghanistan.

Apple voids warranties over cigarette smoke, users say

Eradicate all BB entrants
Coat

Was it free soapbox day in the Daily Mail today?

Got bored of the anti-smoker posts so jumped to the end .... a few points

I smoke, right next to my computer, have for years. Guess what, as the unit is built by myself it has the correct level of thermal venting...meaning air passes through. This means that I rarely have dust the case and have never noticed any tar like substance on any component. Compared the venting of my machine to a G5 and I could easily understand why it was full of gunk.

But for all the non and ex smokers out there, do you keep all particulates away from your machine? I mean all because the worst inside of a case I have seen came from a non smoker. Was a coffee drinker whose cup used to sit in front of the air intake. Do you imagine the wispy white stuff rising from the cup contains just water molecules? No, the conditions on the inside of a pc do not always reflect their surroundings.

Imagine a pc, running for 5 years, in a lagoon restaurant. Thats right, warm, humid and fat in the air. Care to guess what condition it was in? Perfect, like it had just shipped. While smoking may contribute to damage over time it can never ever be classed as the sole cause.

Other points I think I should make

Hard drives fail in non smokers machines

So do cd drives, cpus, memory, motherboards.....oh my, they all do

Non smokers machines come in full of crap and gunk

Patronising ex smokers need lining up against a wall

When they came for the smokers I did not speak, for I was not a smoker (Although the ex-smokers jumped up and down like cackling hyenas pointing and squeeling their delight)

@gareth 5

Spot on, MS have stated numerous times that your account isnt affected.

Doubt this will get off the ground as they are also wanting people who are having issues not attributed to Live, because all MS have to do is ask them to prove the modding process hasnt caused the issue.

Would you expect MS to fix the red ring of death after you had invalidated the warranty by modding the box?....No?....then stop crying and buy a new one.

@registerfail

It is still an offense to sell a BBFC age restricted film/game to an adult if you know they intend to give it to the child. Ask the store manager if he prefers losing a £40 sale or having to pay a £5000 fine and have the assistant spend 6 months at her majesties pleasure?

In my retail days (Video and Games) I refused loads of adults when their ten year old wandered upto them with and 18 item and asked their parent to get it for them.

The store assistant did exactly the right thing. But at least now we know when we see a spoiled little git that deserves a good slap as much as his parents do there is a good chance you are the parent......moron

Tories oppose charges and speed cameras

Eradicate all BB entrants

Stop looking for lies.....

..... and read the full statement. Yes the do just mention FIXED cameras will no longer get funding......but they also mention that the average speed cameras will still be restricted to motorway roadworks and similar as they are now.

As for those who say they drive safely a few miles an hour under the speed limit, you are morons. Ask any advanced driver, police driver, driving instructor or tester and they all agree that driving too slowly actually causes more accidents as the line of poor chumps stuck behind you become more annoyed and attempt rash overtaking moves.

I hate cameras but I dont speed, I am proud of the fact that in 2 years of using my route to work I havent tripped the flashy sign thing that says you are speeding, and that's on a steep hill. Why do I hate speed cameras? Its simple ...... lets compare what a speed camera catches to say what a traffic car could catch

Speed Camera = Someone speeding. Thats it. Nothing else.

Traffic car = Speeders, people yakking on the phone, ladies applying mascara while doing 40 ( i pulled over and let her past .... not risking it) MORONS DRIVING UNDER THE SPEED LIMIT AND CAUSING A ROLLING OBSTRUCTION, chavs in their saxo vtr, vehicles without operational brake lights......are you getting the idea now?

As for blaming the Tories saying they introduced them, yes they did, but it is Labour that have abused them.

SIgh....when will Mac users learn from Win users

@ Mr Weekender - I have, i run one. Its shit. On afp shares alone I have to restart the fecking thing every few weeks because it has decided to reject all access for no reason. PC environments equivelant (Win2K3) hasnt had an issue yet. As for user accounts and profiles we tried it, again its shit. Went back to AD. I cant argue it has a very pretty desktop but it just sits there now as an extremely expensive 1.5TB storage module. Oh yes....almost forgot the bulk update that installs certain software you are constantly remove it. Apple....get a clue.....if we take it out we dont want it updating never mind being cheeky bastards and re-installing it. Any extra securtiy on any platform (I play with Solaris too) is always welcome.

Rant over back to the point of my comment title. In the past month XP user reported a pop up during a browsing session, they had promptly closed the session and called us straight away. Result was no malware installed and user ok to keep going. Where as a Mac user, fortunately not where I work, brought round a macbook. It seemed they had actively gone out and tried to get as much malware as possible loaded onto it. Had previously suggested they install ClamAV, they did then removed it because they found they updates annoying!!!!!!! They then stated that Mac's are safe and never get infected.

While most of us in this industry know how to keep ourselves safe, none of us can say the same of all of their users.

Yes avoiding all of the products made by these companies would be impossible. But boycotting Apple wouldnt be.

I think a question that needs to be asked of companies such as Apple, who completely outsource their manufacturing to such companies, is why are they still charging the premium price tag for products that only a few years ago were put together by someone who was paid per hour what some of their current staff earn in 2 weeks?

Simple answer to all of your questions

It really is so simple. You would think that to be a police officer you would require a certain amount of that very rare item sometimes known as common sense.

For numerous years now the police forces of this country have been employing graduates (And no, not graduates of courses you think would be of benefit to such a position, think of courses that require you to watch Trisha and read the Star for 3 years) and then fast tracking them to Inspector status.

My point? Have you ever met a graduate WITH common sense?
