London Mayor shows off GIANT BLUE COCK in busy square

Jim 48

I really should hate Boris as I am against everything that his politics stand for, but when he comes out with stuff like:

"This beautiful sculpture: if you were to Google it in a few years’ time you would probably not be able to find it because that search engine would probably collapse at the behest of the Prime Minister."

you just can't help liking him a little bit. That still doesn't mean I have any respect for him though.

BlackBerry's retro-look QWERTY Q5 mobe: Resentment by design

Jim 48

Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal, but I would like to say that I've had a Q5 for a few weeks and I actually really like it. I can use it quite happily with one hand and it does everything I want from a _business_ phone. I've also used a Z10 and, as mentioned in a separate el reg article, I do find myself swiping up on my Galaxy Nexus so the muscle memory must like that particular action.

BlackBerry have ballsed up on the price though, IMHO it should be <£200 sim-free.

I think you'll find that you need to read the actual story, Cnut was demonstrating that the power of the king was nothing compared to the power of their god. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cnut_the_Great#Ruler_of_the_waves

US to UK services

I've been using the US Google Music service for a while and do like it, although, as mentioned, it did take an age to upload my music (and it exceeded by broadband cap so I found myself speed-limited for a while). To be able to buy songs on my device I had to clear the data for the Play Store but everything else seems to have transitioned to the UK version OK. I usually buy MP3s from Amazon but I may switch to Google, although I will always do a price comparison first.

The DRM on the ebook expires

Jim 48
Thumb Up

My local library already lends ebooks and it works quite well, there's a limited number of books you can borrow/reserve at one time but you can define how long you would like the book for. The range is quite extensive and new books are being added all the time, although the categories can be a bit esoteric sometimes. The idea that an ebook can only be borrowed by one person at a time seems a bit strange at first, but it kind of makes sense in the library scenario. The eBooks are protected using Adobe DRM and I download & read them using Aldiko on my Android phone/tablet.

Indeed. I signed up to Yac ("You're Always Connected") when it was free and still have a Personal Number through them. It's very rarely used but I have found it useful for fax and when somebody/site insists on a telephone number but I'm not going to give them a main one.

I use a Sony MW600 to send music from my laptop to the speakers that are on the other side of the room. In fact, I was recently looking to get another one, or similar, as I could do with one for music and one for using as a phone headset and this looks like it would fit the bill.

Twelve... classic 1980s 8-bit micros

Jim 48

I remember them all. When it came for me to buy a computer for helping my computer studies at school, I had the choice of a BBC-B, a few on this list, a Tatung Einstein (IIRC BBC compatible) and I went for a ... Sharp MZ-700, a machine with hardly any games, character graphics and you had to load the OS from tape every-time you wanted to use it. Mine had the built in tape drive & plotter. But it was £2 cheaper than the BBC-B \:-|

Google motors into cloud storage with Drive

Jim 48
WTF?

Picasa

I paid to have extra space specifically for my Picasa ($5/year) and according to the new storage plans document (http://support.google.com/drive/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=39567&p=butter_old_storage) I should be able to keep this plan BUT "If your account lapses, your credit card is declined, or you choose to change your storage plan in any way (upgrade or downgrade), you’ll be switched to the new Google storage plan.". I am NOT paying around $30/year for a similar allocation.

My Picasa currently shows I have 21GB available whilst Drive says I have 25600Mb.

Seems like a half decent idea but my main problem with this kind of thing (and the huge sat navs that you can get) is the amount of windscreen "real estate" they take up. At least with a sat nav it can be tucked in a corner where it's not going to block the view but having a massive Desire HD (which is what I have as well) stuck in the middle in the screen would hide cyclists, bikers, pedestrians etc.

I might give it a go though if I can site it so the camera can see the road but so can I.

Big Brother

Paranoid Much?

If emails are routed through RIM's infrastructure (and I very much doubt it would be as both Apple and Google would not want RIM taking over communication channels on their respective devices) then you can be damn sure it would be encrypted to the same levels as the existing BlackBerry BES devices which _nobody_ (not even RIM) can snoop on. If you are worried about people snooping on your communications then you should be more concerned with your mobile & email service providers!

eBay says the same thing, around £200 seems to be the price people are willing to pay (for the 16Gb model at least). Although I'm not sure at the moment if this is because there is a glut.
