Useless

Unles details of the exploit are made public things wont improve.

The source could be compromised servers, virused pc's, hijacked dns, or simply people tying in a password in a wrong window.

Sure, all of these could be sorted out by people logging in with different passwords for different sites, and regularly changing passwords. BWAAHAHAHA!!!

Fibre to YOUR premises NBN still on table pending telco talks

100MB

Is what everyone was getting with a passive optical network... Yes 6% of pundits could ask(pay) for more and get a dedicated fibre rather than one there sharing with, what was it? 16 other premisis.

So you could then run it at a high speed. Yes in theory the switching gear could be upgraded, when new stuff comes out. But with the spend on building the NBN people would demand a return on investment, so how could upgrades NOT lag for a number of years before having the digital divide argument again.

The NBN was being rolled out in Tas with so many complete stoppages that it made you wonder if Telsra was directly paying the union safety bods to make it fail. The contractors were being hellishly squeezed.... (Some hearsay rumor of $5K to clean a pit of chemicals used in the snotboxes, let lone asbestos, so perhaps the safety guys were making money)

Anyway... With the setup final fibre connection to a house could take 4 or 5 seperate visits? Over a couple of months! OMG! A well laid out development plan or Money pit, You decide.

Worried about NBN not lack of it

Its all Hype, Smoke and Mirrors.

There is a reason that the Libs make the insult 'You've been drinking the NBN coolaid'

Tasmania is one of the most NBN connected areas. We have fibre to the node in some areas NBN via wireless in others and NBN via satalite...

It has been a poitically motivated roll out. The fibre is a passvely shared network. I forget if it was 16 or 32 premesis that share the one fibre. They essentially deliver 3 strands to allow for future upgrades in a way that doesnt take you off the network. But still its a party line. When the neighbours endpoint fails in the right mode its going to leave a lot of unhappy customers.

Fully subscribed your bandwidth will be 80Mb (assuming no communications overhead)... Which is a lot, and technicaly possible to upgrade, but given the headache of the fibre rollout I cannot see it EVER being upgraded. 6% of lucky subscribers may be able to have their fibre upgraded to a point to point connection. Could be cool.

Cost for access? yes unless your Aunt Dorothy you'll be paying more.

So it sounds fast, has the ability to be upgraded, so whats the problem?

Well we have all experienced dodgy mobile phone connections. Wireless NBN will provide take out your old copper and instead give you VOIP over the wireless... Nervous yet?

How about satelite? VOIP over that anyone? Suddenly the concept of removing your old phone services and leaving you with a layer 2 connection port to your service provider suddenly sounds like you've just had a run in with IT on an evangelical agenda.

And we have seen agendas play out. Telstra dragging its heels, scares of asbestos stopping all work, across the state. Electrical Trades Union bignoting itself. Thats locally, wont mention conroy and underpants or lack of spectrum, satalite slots etc.

The wife has an accountancy practice in central hobart. We are having the copper disconnected in 6 months. The second round of dissconnections. The first round will be in may. Telstra are at this point in time UNABLE to process orders to have our data and voip service transefered from copper to the NBN (digital business). There is at minimum a 6 week delay between placing an order for the NBN and it being delivered. Oh n those cutoff dates are set in stone. The way out is to have a contract with Telstra saying your moving to their NBN, but as of last week you couldn't place an order.

Going to see someone with satelite NBN tomorrow, he is very unhappy with his broadband. Said voice was impossible, long delay then echo. Guess I'll see if my fears are true.....

Just dont forget the spares

You don't know what people have been doing to those machines. Do they even contain the memory and drives they origionally had? People often ummm, mislead you with what they say. If they can boot off a USB or CD, then SNAIL MAIL them up a linux cd and usb stick, tweek them a bit so they open up a reverse tunnel to you. (dd over the ddrive will show if there are any problems with the harddrive, lshw and you wont have any surprises with the hardware, hell you may even be able to talk them through actually running memtest!)

If your feeling really clever, you can mount the drives with ntfs-3g and try to copy back the system hive c:\windows\system32\config\system.dat If you can you can read the hive for what has been installed on the machines. (a little less error prone than checking directories, oh hang on ive got scripts for that ;-)

Best option probably would be to take up a bunch of refirbs, so you can set them up in a lab and have them as bomb proof as posible. ie a couple of days testing memory and drives, and have a system that they can use to reimage them. Have all the networking sorted so you just have to plug them in and migrate old data.

Refurbish and resale what you bring back. But I guess it all depends upon your budget.

Otherwise make sure you have plenty of spare parts.....

Good luck!

Re: TPM

An interesting effect. I had one client with a windows 8 machine, his settings disabled updates over connections that cost you money. Somehow he had drivers that had 1/2 downloaded updates. His computer got stuck in a reboot loop trying to update components. (solution was to somehow get it in a safe mode and activate the updates over connections that cost yo money, but I digress)

Observing the complains about the components, well why don't you fix it by installing the files, updating the registry entries. Nope. The files were at their correct versions, the registry entries were correct. The thing was baulking due to components not being registered correctly in windows side by side. *sigh ok where's the problem here*? Well the components appear to be digitally signed, with an expiration date etc....(looks like a digital certificate chain, presumably they can issue CRL's) Oh... Comparing to another machine, and a few basic experiments later, They're signed against a signature PER machine. I didn't think of looking at TPM (Thought that was killed years ago) :-(

So what does this mean in reality? Well You have to TRUST M$, because they control the keys that controls what you CAN run on your computers. Trouble with this is that you also have to trust the US government. We have never had ANYTHING like this every before!

This isn't a DRM issue, nor a trust them not to seal data (which it is), its a sovereignty issue. US government with the keys to disable all your Internet connected windows 8 machines, no they would never abuse that sort of power....Yeah Right!

Re: To be fair to Vista

If you've ever thought the windows registry sucked. The first transition to 64bit in xp and vista used registry redirects, err reflection, to give different results depending upon if the registry call was performed by 32 or 64 bit code, add to that the first real use of winsxs (windows side by side for OS files) Its no wonder Vista was a dog, performance wise.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-au/library/windows/desktop/aa384235%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

Thankfully they dropped reflection with win7. Since MS use winsxs for code signing I cant see them removing it from the os files. So if the manafests get stuffed good luck having the os work. (I can fix the files, I can fix the registry, but not the manafest digital signatures they seem to be signed to the pc )

And quite a few of them, like me, have tried it and either don't like it, or don't believe it's worth the effort. IOS or preferably Android is all we need!

Pint

Good luck to them

Given how the trolls tend to have more corporations than patents and can simply have the corporate entity behind failed legal action X go bust rather than pay up. I can understand why even big corporate players are asking, not before time, for some balance.

Yes we have seen how big payers if they are given free reign, will abuse the system. Google will want to SHARE eveything. For Patents to work these days you need almost a productivity test.

Is the patent being used by a small biz, is their production (sales value or volume) enough to allow them to be trodden on.

Does the patent holder just hold the patent or do they produce goods with it.

Are any of the parties engaged in nuisance litigation. Are they the inventor, produce goods directly based on the invention, or have enough financial capital to really fight it out?

The easy approach is not to do an in depth analysis of what is actually good for the country. The result is that the big corporates win.

So anything, that seeks to get a meaningful report on the mess HAS to be applauded.

re is my experience of UEFI. Let me know If you would find this something you would be happy about.

I use linux to repair malfunctioning windows machines. I boot them via network PXE boot and then work on them with Windows essentially offline.

The new UEFI standard means on HP laptops I have to.

1. Find the magic key get into the bios

2. Diable secureboot and be told that this will likely make my system inoperable

3. Activate legacy boot options and enable

4. Enter a random generated pin to get the secureboot options off.

5. Reboot and press magic key #2 to get the legacy boot options to work at all, otherwise it boots stright into windows

6. Go and choose the network to boot from, even knowing I set it to be the defult boot option within the bios

7. Allow the machine to boot

(from this point if I want network boot I must repeat steps 5,6,7)

vs before UEFI

1. Find the magic key to get into the bios

2. Set the default boot device to be network,

3. often enable PXE rom in the bios

4. Reboot

(From this point boot OS is determined via dhcp options)

Now if to boot windows you had to

1. Go and set an option that tells you that it will destroy your computer

2. Enter a code to show that you really want to destroy your computer

then for each time you boot

3. press a key that is not normally displayed

4. Actually select that you wanted to boot windows not (linux ICK!)

Would you be happy?

Would you send the bloody stupid thing back cause its not fit for purpose?

Now as a consumer you cannot buy an alternative, because a behemoth company, used financial inducements to influence what you can buy.

Is the average lay person going to try a live CD when they are told that this will destroy their PC? This goes a little beyond a choice of browser. Unfortunately this is probably better describe as an anti competitive cartel. Action needs to be brought against the manufacturers. Otherwise Microsoft will just say it was up to the manufacturers if they wanted discounts for adopting a standard.

If MS loose a few billion. Nothing will change. If the manufacturers do, as well.....

Things will really change.
