The Sex Pistols were manufactured properly. Will Young (who?) was not. Authenticity does matter. This is more complex than you are making out. You don't have to stay poor to be authentic, you just have to present yourself honestly, even if you are presenting a fantasy. Confused? That's art.

Advertising is educational?

This should read "Advertising serves no purpose at all: it provides lies and irritation about products that we don't need but are vulnerable to being conned into acquiring"

If there was no "push" advertising at all, only useful products would be sold, by word of mouth and people actually searching for stuff instead of having it thrust in their face alongside a pair of tits.

Advertising distorts the market, giving propaganda mind control powers to those who can afford it. Look at where we end up, how many products actually are useful or do what they claim?

Vanity demand is being supplied with everything it needs, that is all. People say they get what they want, because adverts told them what to want. Myself included (I am not being patronising here). Unfortunately, useful stuff can be harder to sell when competing with a billion "Things taste better with Coke" messages.

So now you will tell me that google will read my mind and only show me adverts i like so there is no problem. Ha ha ha. What a circular argument. Anyway, google should know I want NO ADS AT ALL and how can they possible satisfy that?

btw, i call ads "messages paid for that wouldn't be there without the money" e.g. Sprite sponsoring a hiphop event. I don't mean that nobody should be able to talk about products, i just mean the ad is not the message. I'm with Steve, above. The problem with ads is they get in your face, they suck, they are parasitic. Solve that problem instead of trying to deliver more "targeted" shit around stuff I actually want. I really would rather that you did not learn enough about me to "target" me like that.

Some places have no gadgets AND no crime. How?

i live in Vilnius where there is very very little street crime, and none of the police have helmet cameras or PDAs or tasers or even cool looking cars.

In fact the police are hardly respected at all, and certainly don't spend much time on respecting human rights, or even reading the police code. They famously locked up a BBC investigative journalist for reporting the dealer he just bought heroin from. They didn't lock up the dealer (mafia payoff no doubt).

So how can I walk around the streets at night and not worry here? Why do I let my girlfriend walk back on her own from her friend's house in the dark? How is it possible? I thought technology was the only solution!!

I have no idea why people spend all that effort building a "my"space "community" ffs. It is not yours! It can be taken away from you! What would all those DJs do about getting gigs if their page was suddenly deleted? (true story) What? you built your business model on the idea that MySpace would provide you with everything and it wouldn't go wrong? o. m. g. Did you even read the terms and conditions?

Get a clue. Get your own freaking webspace with a guarantee of service and no ridiculous copyright capitulation. Keep your myspace just because everybody else has one (but don't worry, that fad will pass, myspace is the new flared trousers)

within a radius of 5 miles from my flat in Vilnius there are probably about 50 gajillion LPs recorded by soviet musicians that are total ripoffs of western popular music. Swap them for an LED patent? :)
