re: Wallet to Wallet transactions?
Please let us mere mortals know what planet you are living on.
Do you really think that.
"ability to transfer funds seamlessly from one "wallet" to another (without charge!)"
will be allowed.
The will be at least a 10% handling charge levied by the banks etc.
Then what is to stop the guy standing next to you on the 17:30 tube from Bank to Barnet from emptying your wallet during the crush from Bank to Camden?
Fail Sir. I say Fail.
These bozos forget one big advantage Cash has
You can do deals 'off the books'.
What the Gov can't see, the gov can't tax.

Try this artist
Chris Foss
He illustrated the covers of a lot of the Sci-Fi books in my collection
Perhaps this will give people a taste.

Ah but for the glossy display
If it were not for the glossy display then I might consider swapping my 4+yr old 17in MBP for a new Mac.
Don't get me wrong, it is not only Apple that are shipping all or nearly all of their entire model lines with Glossy screens.
Frankly, I find the usability of such screens pretty poor.
Otherwise, I'd be joining you in the Dungeon.
SAD but not quite a Fail on Apple's part.
There is only one true text editor
for the PDP-11, and that was 'teco'.
I saw my first PDP-11 in Sept 1974. IT was a PDP-11/40. 56Kbytes of Core and a single 2.4Mb RK05 disk.
The evelsting memory of that system was the regular occurrence of the Dos V8 equivalent of a BSOD
"F342-Odd address or other Trap-4"
A few years later I went to work for DEC in Reading. 20 years of doing lots of cool stuff.
Thanks for the memories.
Dear Microsoft
Can we have an 'Uber Geek' mode please.
You know the one where you get out of our face and let us do what we want to.
No nagging, 'are you sure'
no enforced secutiry updates
No metro
Classic by default (ok, I can hear the groans)
Some of us really want to just get on with our work
Oh, and a way to actually make the latest versions of Office comply with the UK Disability discrimiation Act. Blue on dark blue fails miserably. Don't you know that the human eye has less blue receptors than Red or green? Grey on Dark grey does not work either.
Blame the Car makers more than Apple
With their shiny new models every year. Each one only slightly different from the last. Then the Salesman drools over the 0-60mph times etc etc etc.
Apple really only copied this. Agreed that they have taken the 'iDesire' model to new heights but the concept is much the same.
The next step?
MS will have to get Google to pay their 'royalties'. IF they don't then the companies like HTC, Samsung etc won't like it.
If will be interesting to see what effect Google has on the B&N vs MS case. They've been subpoena'd to appear for B&N.
Re: Posted Friday 18th November 2011 17:23 GMT
MS did have an internal product. It went Beta last year and sank without a trace.
No doubt they will take Hadoop and modify it's interface just enough to make everything else fail to work with it as they do standard Hadoop.
They'll probably keep tweaking it just like they do with SMB.
Very soon, you will have MS-Hadoop, incompaitble with everyone else.
Then
4) Profit.
SOP form MS then...

Pres Obama announces a new prison building programme.
20million new places in prisons to be constructed by the end of 2014
"This new programme is designed to get the USA back to work"
Some commentators joked that it would be cheaper to build fences around all those housing developments where all the resigents have been 'foreclosed' and keep the new breed of computer felons there.
{Only joking but this shows what a mess the USA is in, both legally and financially}
Even if you hate Apple
their decision not to allow Flash on their devices is probably going to help a lot of other devices as well.
Flash should be consigned to the trashcan/wastebasket of history.
Paris, coz even she knows when it is time to give up.
And to state the bleeding obvious....
The same percentages may well apply to Android Fondleslabs.
Did they ask that question? Probably not.
re: Just give it a try.
So you are wondering why the 'linkedIn' app was not part of the phone.
Just ask youself this.
Why?
Why should it be part of the phone?
Having owned and iPhone 3gs and not an HTC sensation, I have to say the iPhone is better. Minimal apps but easy to add. The HTC, lots of apps that are frigging useless to be but I can't remove unless I root the phone.
Now which is best? Still want every phone shipped with only your fav apps? What about mine? What? they don't match 100%.
Think about the real world and the millions of non techy users who don't give a toss about LinkedIn.
Death Traps
These Eleccy Vehicles.
I've seen three Priuses involved in RTA's when running in Leccy mode. I blame all the youngsters wearing iPods etc. Many can't hear squat at the volumes they play their R&B/Techno crap at

Brings a whole new meaning to the term
SleazyJet...
Coat?
Only £100.00?
Well Microsoft will soon put a stop to that silliness.
MS to H... How about $50 per device. That seems reasonable enough.
H execs go white in the face.
Then they settle for $40 per device.
re: Shame
I'll second that. Plus a lot of Prog Rock that I have in 12in format are simply not agailable for digital download.
I'll buy CD's as long as I can. When they are no longer available, I'll simply stop buying Music.
Music Industry? Are you listening? Pah probably not.
I'll get me coat as I'm off to see a prog rock cover band. (Ex Army Greatcoat naturally)
IWF == Mary Whitehouse on Steroids
I certainly don't want this bunch of do-gooders anywhere near the controled of the UK Internet. IF they are even the BBC will get censored.
You can't have 'Life of Brian' references now can you?
Fail? Nowhere near enough of one for me.
Groupon? WTF?
Their Terms of Service are joy to read. If you are a retailer you are well and truly screwed.
Wanna clear some old stock? Well, if you use Groupon, you are certain to get less than you paid for the items. You'd be better off flogging them down your local car boot.
Ponzi Scheme? You bet.
It will crash and burn.
I don't have any connection with them, financial or otherwise but I was asked by a retile what I thought of their terms of business.

There was a recent study the showed that iPhone/iPad users were more likely to PAY for apps than their equivalent on the Android side of the fence.
If the devs are interested in revenue then guess which market they will develop for?
On the subject of PC AV and suffering no performance issues... Ha Ha.
I have this dual core Thinkpad. It virtually becomes useless on a Wednesday morning when its AV scan is taking place. I can't change the time it runs because some MCSE in IT has locked it down with a group policy.
So wednesday's I 'do dev stuff' on a Linux Netbook. Even that single core Atom is more responsive than the Widows laptop in that period. I really dread the advent of AV software for phones.
'Sorry darling I can't make that 999 call because the phone is running its Anti Virus check'
Rs Sir Cosmo Bonsor
is that a bigger arse than Bill Gates?
You might hate him but love or hat him, his company has changed the way we interact with technology.
Sure, hardly any of the things they did were truly original, but you can't get away from the fact that they put it all together and produced stuff that 'just worked' (well mostly). They raised the bar. A bar that many other manufacturers are struggling to get over.
So, by all means hate him but you ave to admire him all the same.
Complete Arse?
Hardly.
The only savig grace is
that I don't get weekly mailshots from Sky extolling the virtues of their service. The sky ones come monthly.
Virgin.... on the otherhand bombard me with mailshots and flyers. Those that are addressed are to 'The Occupier' so I can't get them stopped. I've even tried sending a whole load of them back the sender in an unstamped envelope yet still they come.
I'd never buy Sky or Virgin. I wish that I could persuade both compamies to stop sending me this [redacted]. What TV I watch is on Freeview/FreeSat
At Last, Windows DataCentre Edition
Ok,ok, I'm outa here.
No Gnome 3 Tweakery then?
Sign.
Go and sit on the naughty step ElReg. A simple google would have brough you
https://live.gnome.org/GnomeTweakTool
Where's the dunces cap icon then you need it?????
Fail. You really must do better (as my geog teacher said when I'd got 95% in an exam}
The 'other' alternative
Is to use a JCB and bury the dam things underground.
If they can do it with 133Kv at the Olymics site, then the much smaller Kv from these ECO wind farms should be kept underground.
Plus if they are buried 6ft under, the copper thieves will have a harder time stealing the damm stuff.
The overhead cables are just to easy. Push or pull the pylon over, duck to avoid the sparks and then help yourself.
Beer time!
Oh Goody
Says Steve Balmer to himself. Lots more idiots buying this stuff and paying us for the honour to use it. I wonder how long the lines in the stores will be....

He'd probably be smoking a cigar in former times.
BB's New Feature

Come on RIM, you realy have to do better or is this all a ploy to get bought by MS?
Why did IBM buy this Company?
Simply because it fitted very well into that part of their business portfolio.
Sum of the parts and all that....
My guess is that it will take quite some time and more than a little cash to integrate Autonomy into the HP business.
Meanwhile in Redmond
Codes are working day and night to make this app unrunnable on Windows 8
Above them in their office is the old slogan.
'The Job ain't done until Lotus don't run!'
Available outside the USA?
Thought not.
Fail coz you consider yourself a Global Tech player?
Fail coz everyone else (apart from B&N) it seems thinks on a global scale.
Fail coz ... well you deserve to for your patent scam on Android devices.
Get the message?
Thought not. sigh
And the Cloud it not the answer
to life the universe and everything let alone Data Aging/Hierarchical Storage Managment.
Just before someone says it is.
Err? you have missed something????
What about the Olympics part 2 then? The Paralympics? All you seem to talk about is the main event but for a lot of people that is the mere warmup act.
A Number of other venues will be used for this. For example Brands Hatch.
Come on ElReg.....
Or are Acer and the rest of them going to pack up shop and take their toys home once the first closing cerempny has happened.
Where's the Mega Fail icon when you need it?
Astrolabe will be the big loser here
Didn't they see this in the stars?
Coat?
You forgot the Microsoft Tax
I'm sure that will come in at $50/unit...
but will I have to take out a Mortgage to buy one?
Frankly, until the price of Flash devices like these drop considerably they will be the preserve of the fanboi.
I looked at one PCI device and on a per GB basis, it was 20% more expensive than a packaged SATA device.
Even the decent sized SATA devices (>250GB) are still beyond the wallet/purse of the average punter.
Two arms and how many legs?
Is this going to cost.
I'm not talking about the H/W but the frankly silly prices that Oracle charge for their software when it runs on anything more than a single core X86.
Paris coz even she knows when she is having her clothes ripped off.
Psssst Wanna buy a supercomuter?
40ft Container! All the more easy to steal then.
Where's Google?
Come on you Chocolate Factory people. When are you going to say, enough is enough and kick the borg where it hurts?
This is a Tax levied on Android handsets pure and simple. Either stop messing around with Android and fix these issues (ie code around) or just give up.
Microsoft will make more money from Android than it will ever from WP7 etc and all without lifting a finger.
Feed the Troll [2]
This is becoming typical of the lazy reporting that we see in dead tree papers and the dumbed down TV news.
In other news,
Records were today found in a school in South Wales that showed the level of absenteeism amongst male pupils aged 13+, that dated from before 1900. The main reason given for their absenteeism was that they were now working full time in one of the 10 collieries close to the village.
Mrs Dai Jones, who found the records said, 'Won't someone think of the Children. This has to be stopped immediately.'
[My Great, Great, Great Grandfather went down the pit in S. Wales aged 14.]

Apple" "you want what?"
rolls around on the floor laughing like a Policeman.
Apple guy1 says after the meeting to his boss
"Did they really think we would let them have access to all that neat stuff we collect about our users?"
Boss smiles.
"Do they think we were born yesterday."
Ok, ok. I know.
Mrs Bercows' revenge?
Fresh from her appearance in BB....
Mines the one with the Parliamentary phone directory in the pocket.
It is the radio for me.
Especially BBC Radio 4 or the world Service.
I can do things on the move whilst listening in to the programme. you can't do that with the goggle box or the news over the internet.
But mixing BBC Radio and their web site and in particular 'From our own correspondent' is very enlightening. iPlayer & Podcasts ensure I don't miss progs that are broadcast when I'm at work.
As for TV news? Nah. Hardly ever watch it.
As for US TV news? Well, the least said the better. Content free sections between the more important events, the Adverts.
Open your PC Case, go to jail, do not collect £200
What Microsoft and the mainstream (eg large) PC Manufacturers want is the the PC of the future is locked down and that even opening the case would constitute a violation of the DMCA (or local equivalent).
Gone would be the days when you could add RAM, a second HDD or swap the DVD drive for a BluRay one. Disabling the Secure boot could be regarded as copyright circumvention by some courts. Jail time anyone?
The EU would like to make even changing the spark plugs of a car outside a recognised service centre illegal. It does not take much to extend that concept to PC's.
Tux. could become extinct. Better add it to the 'Red List' pronto.
HTS Sensation
Using it OOTB is indeed clunky.
Many apps can't be removed
Many apps can't be moved to the Memory card.
If yours is smooth then you must be running a non standard OS build.
Ask youself this question
What percentage of the people who buy a Sensation will have the inclination or the skills to root the device and install a different ROM build?
My take on that is very small, very small indeed.
This phone is 'Sensationaly bad' (pun intended)
Here Mr OEM have this {brown envelope}
MS OEM Salesman to OEM Purchasing Mgr
"All you have to do is make it impossible to boot anything but Windows on every machine you ship."
OEM rolls over and accepts the incentive.
MS Guy smiles, puts away the loaded 45 and says,
"Now how hard was that?"
We seem to have gotten to the tipping point
Where even thinking of putting a chip in a device will get you sued.
Sigh, deep sigh
As the US Politicians are mostly lawyers and this patent crazyness will only benefit the lawyers there really is no incentive to stop this merrygoround especially with a US Presidential election a little over 13 months away.
That might be true but
In the process it might turn parts of Lancashire into a wasteland due to the earthquates caused by the fracking and the pollution of the water table. There are parts of the USA where this is already happening.
On the otherhand, demolishing Blackpool might be a good idea.
Eat this because of the danger.
MS, Casino's & Nevada
Microsoft is registered in Nevada for US Business Taxation purposes.
The State of Nevada imposes ZERO taxes on Business (ie. like Corporation Tax). This is due to the state giving businesses like Casino's a favourable environment to locate there.
This saves them a whole shed load of money. This runs into several billion a year.
Time for Nevada to do the same?
(Where MS Is registered for Corporate Taxation, or lack thereof...) At least the likes of Apple& IBM (US) don't hide in US Tax havens. IBM do hide in Ireland though like Adobe and a host of others.
sorry. fat chance of NV investigation MS. The Casinos have far too much clout.
Now where's the 'Flying Pig' Icon when you need it. (A Flying Sheep one would be just as good is you want to continue the Python theme...)
