Royal Bank of Scotland IT contractor ban sparks murmurs of legal action

Steve Davies 3 Silver badge

Just the start

of an exodus.

Several contractor friends of mine (I was one once) are heading for the exit and moving abroad.

One finishes his current contract at the end of the month. His house has been sold and is off to Canada.

They won't be the last and there are politicians talking about the skills shortage (sic). Yet the HMRC are being totally intransigent and effectively making it worse for many companies and government departments.

Excitement when Installing Windows 10?

Oh... Wait... you must mean the anticipation of will it bork or not after the upgrade (ok, this happens less frequently but it does happen)

(sort of reminds me of when waiting for an RSX-11M Sysgen build to boot)

and

What they have broken this time.

As for the Indexer... Yet another example of 'do it our way or not at all!'.

Re: Site services

Ah yes, I remember those days very well.

Being tasked with doing things like upgrading ram on Vaxen from time to time, I took a lesson I'd learned from an ex USAF Avionics fitter with me. In those days, there was a key switch on the front panel.

Once the correct system was located (with site staff confirming that it was indeed the right machine) we'd switch the system off. Then I'd attach an 'Engineer working on system' sign to the front and then I'd tie one end of my 'get the right cabinet device to the key. This was a 10ft long piece of string with one of those rubber quoits tied to the other end. This was tossed over the top of the cabinet so that you would know which was the correct one to work on at the back.

There was hell to pay one day as we went to lunch (and to warm up as those DC's were cold) and came back to find that the 'Engineer' sign had gone as well as my bit of string/quoit tool. My Field Service toolcase was also missing. The system we'd been working on was also powered on.

It turned out that a PHB was unable to play 'Adventure' in his lunchtime so came into the DC to investigate. He unilaterally decided that the job was done and tidied everything away.

He was still pissed off when we returned as he still could not get to the server. Well, as it had zero RAM it couldn't run very well now could it. That didn't cut the mustard with him one little bit.

I got a lot of verbal from him all the time I was trying to finish the job. I found my quoit tool in a skip outside the building.

I refused to go back to that site. The company was taken over a few months later and that PHB was almost the first to be given his pink slip. (this was NYC)

Such was the numbskulls we encounterd on an almost daily basis.

You made my day. This 'hipster' is 66 (almost 67) years old and would not go back to Windows even if you paid off what remains of my Mortgage.

I have a dock at home that uses USB-C that includes Ethernet, SD, USB-A, Display Port (4k Monitor) and Can charge my Macbook. One cable to connect and that's it.

On the move, all I need is ONE SD card adapter and even that hardly gets used as I now plug my cameras into the MacBook.

I can't remember the last time I've plugged in a Display when away from home. WiFi does the Ethernet (usually via my phone's hotspot).

How many places have 10Gb Ethernet anyway? 1Gb is the still the norm around here.

I was working at DEC at the time.

For a while under Compaq we had to account for our hours as if we were building PC's and not working on long term services projects in four or five countries. When they offered me an exit door after 20 years, I took it. Back then, that meant 20 months pay. Paid off the mortgage the next day.

Re: How are they going to fund it?

Debt. Debt and loads of it.

The problem is that sooner or later the Debt has to be paid back (or the company goes TITSUP). Even if it is paid back, there could be so much of it that the Company still goes TITSUP.

The problem is that far too many MBA's are chasing that gold at the end of the rainbow. As soon as they see that their current expedition will be a dud, they jump ship and try again.

Debt is a real company killer. VC's love to load companies up with it and then do an 'exit stage left' before anyone notices.

Apple are not the only company to have 'private API's'.

I was once bitten by this. We were happily using said private API's with the PHB telling us in almost every meetiing that it was 'fine, I have permission' only to find that the API returns had all changed after one update.

Said PHB had to admit to his PHB's that he was full of Sh1t.

Three monthe of coding, testing and faffing around with release engineering we got an updated program out the door and all our customers could update their systems.

You take a risk when using private API's of any sort. If you are happy with the rug being pulled from under your feet then fine. Otherwise, they should be labelled

re: Switching Aircraft Engine Types

is nigh on impossible for Aircraft that are already out there flying.

Some Airlines prefer to stick with on engine supplier so the maker has to soak up the cost of putting that engine onto their airframe and modifying all the associated control systems. That's why 'launch engine' is such a kudos point for an engine maker. They'll work closely with the airframe maker to get it right but sometimes... things go a bit wrong.

The R-R Trent engines on the Quantas A-380 is a good example. Only after the aircraft had seen a good number of operational hours did problems develop. A lot of midnight oil was burned in Derby fixing that problem.

Then there is the whole other elephant in the room and that is spare parts. It is so, so easy to buy spares that are later found to be fakes. These can and do cause crashes. Authenticity of supply is a real problem in the Commercial Aviation world where Airlines are always looking to save a few £££/$$$ etc.
