Windows Phone 8 to get NFC, HD and Skype

"Microsoft has fixed this in the latest update."

So it does support multitasking, then

Android users more likely to put out

Shaun 1

And more likely to be riddled with virii?

Stop

Browser briskness

"the need for an extra tap for many common operations – punching in a new URL"

I don't know how many taps you need on other phones, but on WP7 the process is: Tap the address bar, type in URL, Tap Enter.

I can't think of any way to shorten this process other than to always have the address bar selected with the keyboard on display

Fast App Switching

With regards to your comment about apps taking an age to switch between, this is dependant on the app.

MS introduced Fast App Switching with Mango, but some developers still haven't updated their apps to support it

Shaun 1

I can't compare the speed of the browser, but with regards to standards compliance, I just scored 100 on the acid3 test

Sky to open net telly channels to all

Shaun 1

The current Sky Go online package that is entertainment + sports is £35 a month.

It's a monthly contract and the season lasts 8 months.

I calculate that at £280 for the season

Assuming that you can get the basic package (£15) and add SSF1 (£10, I think on Freeview)

£25 * 8 = £200, or £20 a race, assuming Bahrain goes ahead

I thought they already did this

I've been looking into this for a while and they seem to do this anyway

"With a Sky Go Monthly Ticket you can enjoy great TV from Sky online or on the move without an annual contract or dish - you won't even need an engineer visit. "

Telly makers failing to turn punters on to smart TV

Shaun 1

That's the thing

I'd be interested in a smart TV, but my PS3 has Lovefilm and catchup from BBC, ITV, C4, C5. My 360 has Lovefilm and catchup from Sky, ITV, C4, C5 (and soon BBC). My Virgin Box has catchup from BBC, ITV, C4, C5 and Sky.

With my 360 I can do all those things without even picking up a remote/controller, I can just shout orders at it and it does what I want. ("XBOX, Lovefilm")

Shaun 1

I was hoping it would be sooner

My upgrade is due in May, and was planning on getting this. I suppose I can wait.

Skype is coming to Windows Phone - really

Basic account is free

Which will let you earn achievements, chat to friends etc.

Gold account costs about £40* a year, I think, which gives you online play and 1 week exclusive access to demos etc on 360

*I tend to get them on eBay for £25-30

Shaun 1

I have Mirrors Edge on the XBOX360

Will I have to buy it again on WP7?

Of course I will, just the same as with games on any other platform

Thumb Up

This is likely to be my next new phone.

Due an upgrade from my Omnia 7 in May, hopefully this comes to TMO

Shaun 1

Just a note about backround downloads

The OS does now support background downloading, but that's down to the app devs to integrate it (Which I would have expected the Nokia apps to)

Shaun 1

I just watched Dark Knight this weekend streamed to my Xbox through Lovefilm for free as part of my package, so there's certainly some newer stuff on there

I can't stand Union*

But I shall give you a thumbs up anyway.

I used to get annoyed at the use of the "Americanism" of the word soccer, until I started following TGG, Rugby League and found out the history of the term, and even find myself using it occasionally

*I've tried watching 2 matches and didn't like it, though I am willing to give it one more chance at some point in the future

Shaun 1

I know in Australia, Footy or Football usually means either Rugby League or Aussie Rules, Soccer means association football.

Hence the socceroos

Shaun 1

And it saves me subsidising the football coverage when I have little to no interest in it outside of the months of December-January

Shaun 1

Soccer isn't an americanism

It's been around in England in one spelling or other since the 1880s.

It's short for Association

What hardware stats are you wanting? More than the ones listed at the bottom of page 3?

Shaun 1

I have my contacts synced from Windows Live, Outlook and Google. Yahoo probably works too

Shaun 1

Never had that happen to me.

I suppose the closest thing would be updating your status across loads of social networks at once, but you can select which ones to update at any given time

Shaun 1

I think it's 50 apps

Shaun 1

"I like to know how contact syncing works and that searching for contacts wasn't as easy as it could be."

Ignore that, he's wrong.

You can sync contacts with outlook, windows live, google, probably yahoo too. There are shortcuts in the contacts list too - just tap the letter you want to jump to
