How many Win 10 PCs were in distribution the week before launch?

Re: Any good stuff?

'With this being one of my first comments, I expect to set a new record for downvotes to upvotes for an account.'

You forgot the troll icon but as you're new I'll let it go. Asking for upvotes rarely works. Downvotes, well it depends. You'll need to try harder than that though if you want to set any records.

Playing with graphene? All the cool kids are using TIN – atom-thick sheets of stanene

James 51

Re: Given that they are round...

One molecule thick and particularly with doping was suppose to have the same properties. It was the first wonder material I can remember. It's a long from from the lab to industry.

James 51

Is there any material that if you can create a layer one atom thick doesn't have amazing new properties? And what ever happened to Buckyballs?

Re: @James51

I think at this point Dave is just trolling or farming down votes.

James 51

Re: @James51

@Dave Quoi?

@TheTick I've worked in companies were this has happened. As for your point about ISAs, no I don't but I do have a pension. The difference is that I'm not employing a small army of accountants and laywers to snake through loopholes so that I am suddenly being paid in a tax haven instead of the country where I work.

James 51

Perhaps if you've got nice employers who treat employees/contractors well the system you describe would have merits worth discussing. In a world were even successful companies off shore jobs to temporarily push up share prices, were there are attacks on the ability of those who wish to negotiate collectively by private business and by the government (who is suppose to be looking after their interests, ha), were companies who structure themselves to pay virtually no tax in a territory where they operate payroll taxes are one of the things it is hardest to dodge, were insecurity could prevent reporting of harassment etc etc. In utopia maybe, but this is not a utopia.

Edge out rivals? No! Firefox boss BLASTS Microsoft's Windows 10 browser brouhaha

Re: MY software

Personally I think that would be great. No wasted space with notepad and have notepad++ instead.

James 51

It's not just this slight of hand that is bothering me. It's stuff like forced updates (that aren't security related), cortana gathering a honeypot of info that of course will never be abused/stolen, the lack of clarity over what gets reported back to the mothership and the list goes on.

James 51

Time for the EU to have a polite word with MS? The more I hear about Windows 10 the more glad I am that I'll be waiting to install it.

New twist in telco giants' fight to destroy the FCC's net neutrality

James 51

'Then again, when you have no less than 28 of the country's highest paid lawyers all focused on trying to tear something apart, you'd be a fool to write off their chances.'

I have often been told that America has the best legal system that money can buy. This would seem to add weight to that quote.

I get the feeling if it had of been sixteen cents they would still be kicking up a fuss just on (twisted) principle.

James 51

Perhaps the metric is how much will it take to stop them doing this again.

While it gets a lot of stick, mainly for the UI I've found Ubuntu to be reasonably hassle free..

James 51

Anyone else noticed that any negative comment about windows 10 is getting a lot more downvotes than that sort of comment usually gets?

MS haven't had to do a xbox one style u-turn yet but they risk losing a lot of the most tech savvy users if they don't. I know it won't concern them that much but it will strengthen the competition which should concern them.

Oh look – Office Mobile apps to go with your shiny Windows 10

James 51

I got a full version of One Note along with the trail version of Office with my laptop. I wonder if I can keep the full One Note if I go to Windows 10. Though I'd give it up if I could disable cortana, the baked in spyware and forced upgrades.

BlackBerry vows to make even fewer phones

James 51

Re: @James 51 @g7rpo: What do they offer anymore

I have the Q10. The loudspeaker does well for voice based podcasts (and loudspeaker phone calls to) but isn't that good for music. I have tried bluetooth and wired headphones and both seem to work well.

James 51

Re: Moon on a stick wishes

That's because Google control who gets access to Google Play services.

James 51

Re: @g7rpo: What do they offer anymore

My advice would be to try them if you can. The passport is very different from any other phone out there. The Q10 has the advantage of a removable battery but the passport has the trackpad built into it's keyboard (accurate positioning using the touchscreen is the Q10's only real weakness).

James 51

If they continue to support their older devices two new models a year might be enough to keep them going.

Microsoft sprints to finish, emits possible Windows 10 RC build

James 51

Re: @James51

Although I just learned they'll be forcing people to accept all updates unless you're running enterprise edition. Might be holding off on that till MS do another u-turn.

Cool-headed boffins overcome sticky issue: Graphene-based film could turn heat down

James 51

Re: WTF?

Which makes it sounds like a good material to make radiators out of and probably light enough to start doing some interesting things with the design.

James 51

Could it be used in central heating too? Now if there is a form of graphene that can absorb heat as well could lead to air conditioning /central heating revolution.

BB10 AND Android? How BlackBerry can have its cake and eat it

James 51

I bought a BB10 handset because it had a keyboard and wasn't a privacy invasion tool like Android/Google play and iphones make for good teething rings but I don't need one. I've never needed an app and have not been able to fine something on the BB10 app marketplace and with the Android apps you can't use granular permissions.

AMD looks at sinking sales, gulps: It's worse than we thought

James 51

When I built my own desktop I picked an AMD chip as it gave the best CPU/GPU performance for my budget. When I went to buy laptop last year the only options with AMD chips were either under powered or more expensive than identical laptops which had Intel inside. Manufacturers or retailers are pushing Intel or they just don't know what to do with AMD.
