Dungeons & Dragons relaunches with 'freemium' version 5.0

Thecowking

Re: Any suggestions

5th ed looks good to me, my players say no though, we did the play test and they weren't impressed.

Pathfinder, on the radar, but I was never a fan of 3rd ed (didn't play 3.5). Shadowrun, I used to play and enjoy, wouldn't mind seeing what my players think of that.

Paranoia is my business trip game (we send nerds to all corners of the world!) :)

Maybe later in the year I'll run a pile of one shots, see what people think. All these suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

Re: Paper shortages

I'm just wondering what it's better than, as in which edition of the D&D rules? And in what way?

I've been running a 4th ed session for some co-workers recently, but there's likely to be a few leaving and some fresh blood joining so I am seeing if I can get more opinions on the options before I splash another couple of hundred on a pile of books.

The criteria are:

Dragons are a must.

The rules have to be reasonably simple in the basics.

The dice have to be within the normal set (4,6,8,10,12,20)

Suitable for groups between 4 and 8 people.

Any suggestions?

Re: Now THAT is what surveillance is for

I thought the point was that it wasn't warranted?

As in they quite literally were without a warrant. If they had a warrant, I don't think many here would complain, you have to be able to do that kind of thing, but judicial oversight is a safeguard.

What you need to be asking is how many innocent people had their rights violated because this kind of warrantless tapping was/is going on?

Reasonable suspicion, go to a judge, get your warrant, get the baddie (or not if it turns out they're innocent). That's how it's supposed to work. A judge will say "yes, this looks like reasonable grounds" or "No, you're just fishing, stop it."

Re: There's precious few mobile games that I've actually spent money on.

I did drop about £20 on Final Fantasy: Dimensions, but that's because it was a Final Fantasy game you can't get on non-mobile platforms.

No in game purchases though, I paid my money, I got a game (and patches/bug fixes, which is nice).

RoS was what saved Diablo 3 for me

Before RoS I had played a little D3, finished inferno and pretty much gave up, then I got RoS and frankly it's now the sequel to Diablo 2 that we always wanted, PvP needs work, but when ladders and seasons come in with 2.1, I can definitely see a lot of my free time vanishing into the ether.

Not necessarily , it could be orbiting at an angle, so the time it spends in shadow could be much lower, or possibly never in shadow at all.

If it's in an elliptical orbit it can skim close to the moon on the day side and then swing far above the moon's shadow on the night side too.

So there's a couple of ways it can not experience this in normal operation.

Thecowking

Re: The long drawn out tea-time of the soul

I don't follow why using all the "energy" for want of a better term would lead to the universe disappearing. I assume you're thinking of a halt to expansion and then a big crunch?

Current evidence suggests that we're accellerating, not slowing down, so no crunch in our future.

Penrose has a nice idea about heat death and minimal entropy being indistinguishable from maximal entropy that I find quite satisfying, I can tell you that we can probably work out when the heat death of the universe will occur.

I have no clue why you think energy and space/time are interchangable. I am sure I don't remember anything about that. Energy/matter can affect space/time, but the one isn't the other.

In other words, do you have a real hypothesis here or are you just trying to put a different spin on something you don't understand well enough?

Re: Oh please...

It's definitely not slow charging, my nexus 4 charges as fast at least on the Zens pad by my bed as it ever did on a cable/wallwart.

A Qi charger shouldn't have any issues keeping a phone topped off with the screen on, though I have seen some handsets drop charge while plugged in if they're thrashing the radios and CPU and screen, so it could still discharge slowly even while being charged on QI I suspect (but what I saw was on some benchmarking so probably not real world scenario).

Amazon fuses LoveFilm, subs service, calls it Prime Instant Video

You can even get Lovefilm in there too, it's a little wine container that lets silverlight run. Works pretty well.

Re: I'm obviously missing something...

For the sake of sanity, I'll assume you're serious.

A ram raid is when someone uses a vehicle to break into premises to steal something.

In this case the author has cleverly used the non-existence of said ram raids for the article in question (type-writers) to mock the squirrelling away of many of these articles instead of, for example, putting them in the bin or some other central location. (like a skip, tip, charity shop or E-bay)

I assume the word notorious was used to highlight the utter non-existence of type-writer theft or associated coverage.

I think that's pretty much killed that joke. Sorry Mr Dabbs.

Re: Indeed.

Quite.

I use my library regularly to borrow books, but I've never been there in person. I am not certain why these papers should be limited to a physical presense when a book isn't.

That said, if I wanted to really read a physics paper, I'd probably want to be in a library where it's nice and quiet. I'd like the choice though.

Thecowking

I want one

I can see a lot of use for something that, for example, let me read a website while streaming a video at the same time, or let me chat and have a comic open on the same device.

Two years ago I couldn't see the need for a tablet (check my posting history, it's true). Then I got a nexus 7. Then a Nexus 10, now I can really see that the extra screen and the multiwindow support would be awesome for my usecase. As it stands I'm often sitting on a bus with nexus 7 in one hand watching a film/tv series/anime and my nexus 4 in the other chatting to some people.

I'd _love_ to have them both in the one device.

Ok, it's not for everyone, I can see that.I've been resisting Samsung devices (well nexus 10 aside), because I like the stock android ui too much. This however has the screen size to let me actually use it with a couple of reasonable sized applications so I can forgive the rest of the Samsung ui (which I generally hate, the app drawer and the settings screens especially. Not keen on Odin either)

Sensation: Chinese Jade Rabbit FOUND ON MOON

Thecowking

Wow

First controlled lunar landing in my lifetime and the comments pages are full of petty racism.

Really? They did what no one else has had the gumption or ability (or both) to do in over 40 years and people decide it's all a cheat or worthless because they're not white? Or time for some good old racial stereotyping, I mean after all it's not like the Chinese have any track record in innovation over the last six millenia is it?

I can't decide if it's just jealousy or plain bigotry. I'm normally pretty thick skinned, I've made my share of dentist time jokes, but this is a truly remarkable achievement and it's being mocked simply because it wasn't the West that did it.

I'm going to get a lot of downvotes for being a sanctimonious prick (probably true), but this event deserved more than some back handed compliments and petty racism.

For shame.
