Discovering it

It should be easy enough to find out if this is installed on your phone by just going to your provider and getting an itemised printout of all the SMS you have sent. There would be a suspicious number of SMS sent to one number right after a normal SMS is sent.

Highest point on the Moon found: Higher than Mount Everest

Richard 31

highest point

As there is no sea level on the moon how is the 0M point judged?

If it is the lowest point then do we not have to count the lowest point on Earth? http://geology.com/records/deepest-part-of-the-ocean.shtml says it is 10,924 meters below sea level. By that method Mt Everest is 19772M high.

Paris as she usually strives to be the highest point on Earth.

Jobs Halo

Gone?

You should not complain iPhoto has examined your photos and determined that they are not good enough and you lack the pre-requisite artistic skill to own a Mac. Be thankful that they are providing this feature!

To remedy this please send a polo neck to Steve Jobs.

Twitter turns entire accounts into ads

Ads

Am i the only person who is surprised that they haven't just inserted ads into peoples streams before now? Seems simplest to do.

Wouldn't even matter if people used twitter clients then.

Grand Theft Auto to launch on the Mac

Richard 31

OOOOLD!

Why these very old games? The most recent of them is 6 years old.

The mac is more than capable of running GTA4 style. Assuming there is a rough parity between the processing power required for the PC version.

Can you change the picture on your passport? Mine is 6 years old, and i am quite a bit less fat than i was in that picture.

percentages!

These companies need to be smacked very hard about the head with a dictionary. Unlimited but capped at 2GB, most of us could use 2GB of traffic in minutes.

I think they should be made to advertise these services as a % of the time in a month in which you can download data at the maximum advertised rate. at 20Mb/sec it would take 13 mins 39 seconds to download 2GB. And in a 30 day month there are 2592000 seconds. Therefore you can download things for 0.0316 % of the month.

So instead of advertising it as unlimited they should advertise this package as a 0.0316% service.

Net downloads cause 'millions of lost jobs'

Richard 31

More jobs elsewhere?

If all these jobs in the creative industry have been lost as a result of piracy because people are not spending money on CDs/DVDs/downloads/whatever.

People must keep that money, and spend it elsewhere pumping it into an industry where stealing the output of that industry isn't as trivial.

So does this not mean that other industry's are being kept alive and used more as a result of the creative industry's loss?

So have 2.7 million jobs really been lost?

UK.gov shutters half its websites

Nothing gone

Nothing has actually gone. Most of what is happening is all the sites are merging under portal sites like the direct.gov site.

Rickets rise linked to excessive gaming

1980s

Games consoles have been common in homes since the 1980's. The games were just as addictive then as they are now. Have the number of cases been rising since then?

Instant/real coffee?

Isn't the production of instant coffee somewhat higher? Instant coffee is made by making a normal filter coffee then freeze-drying all the water from it.

Twitter founder signs up to iPhone mag-stripe reader

Richard 31
Paris Hilton

Time to use?

Wouldn't any place that one of these things also already have a normal chip and pin reader? Might help at market stalls and the like where power and normal phone lines are hard to come by though.

Using the mag stripe seems a bit 1970s, why not include something that can read the new wave of contact-less things too?

Japan claims latest long distance e-car record

At an average speed of 25mph, this seems a bit pointless.

My test would have a 5 minute charge time, about the time it takes to fill a normal car and then

how far will if go when you are doing proper motorway speeds with aircon?

Console modders attempt to bypass Xbox Live ban

Richard 31

Would this not just mean that as some point in the near future the CPU key from the unmodded xbox would also be banned? Meaning that you now have two consoles that no longer work on Xbox Live?

Eurocrat demands MP3 player volume limit mandate

So if a limit was set and someone's hearing was damaged who would be responsible. If the nanny state wants to control everything, then they should take all the blame.

That said they should sod right off, we know loud music is bad. Loud music serves its purpose!

Streetfighter II et al

Those who remember the SNES and MegaDrive era may remember the above title retailing for around £70 at the time. Remember this was the early 90's. £70 would probably be more like £100 now.

@ What's wrong with cleartype?`

It gives me eyestrain. I just can't look at a screen with it turned on for more than 30 seconds.

Also, if i have it turned off in my system settings it should be off everywhere, not turned on because someone else likes it.

It this anything other than another way of adding clutter and another attempt at forcing cleartype on us?

Will Microsoft be respecting system settings in this version of Office. Somehow i doubt it, given no other has.

Masked passwords must go

Richard 31
Paris Hilton

Configurable

On my G1 (and presumably all android based phones) there is an option in the settings for password masking. The default is to show the last character typed onscreen and then change it to dots when you enter the next character.

Would this not be a better solution for those who are still paranoid about shoulder surfing? It should still allow all the other things mentioned in the article.
