Children...

If we, as a species, feel that we "know it all", and that our "currently established laws" somehow describe the totality and that then allows us to make sweeping statements about what is and what is not possible then we are, as my title suggests, children.

The point was made before....in capitalism a company does not get "taken over" or enter into deals that are not "beneficial to it", unless they have to. "They have" is defined as "keeping their profitability", in this case. It's easy to blame M$ if we dismiss the larger picture. For a better understanding of that, head to http://www.realityinfo.org . Tim. Nice but...

“We should tax negative externalities” - Tim

Apply morals to an immoral system. Good start.

“and what we're trying to do is maximise the welfare of everyone, current and future.” - Tim

Is it really? I thought it was to maximise and maintain the profit motive and human exploitation under this anti-human system. For the facts that make it “anti-human” check out http://www.realityinfo.org.

Any form of “well crafted” hinted at in the following quote will only be judged in a bottom line somewhere: in profit. Which, as stated before, is anti-human.

“mockery of well crafted economics” - Tim

The best hope I can take from your article, with regards your understanding of humanity and the future direction, would be

The problem...

“Our problem is that such public goods are terribly hard to make money out of. If we can't stop someone else from using them how can we charge for them? And therein lies that problem: if we can't charge for the use then how do we raise the money to find out all this wonderful new knowledge?”

How short sighted does one have to be to not see that any kind of profit making is actually holding humanity back? For example, contrast our connected nature ( http://realityinfo.org/main.htm#Slide=10 ) with our antagonistic production system ( http://realityinfo.org/main.htm#Slide=20 )and you will realise that we are holding ourselves back by looking for a “way to make money” ( profit ) from any technological idea. And to be fair, that spreads to all commodities.

And I’d have thought that elReg would have been into logic too?

What year is this?

Is this really 2009? Why are we still asking, like children, to be taken seriously? Surely it is obvious that the gov don’t give a damn about humans, and are only focused on their focus groups and their profit margings?

So we go back to the “ruler” and ask them to be more “pro-human”, and we expect them to say what?

How many times do you have to ask the oppressor or challenge their ways before you realise that “doing it yourself” is going to be a lot easier in the short and long term. The other way, you just get yourself arrested. http://www.realityinfo.org/news/?p=155

How totally mistaken you are. Voting and "believing" in this system is what has gotten us here in the first place. Bush(snr),Clinton(Bill),Bush(jnr),Clinton(Hilary): two ruling class names since 1989, is a prime example of "democracy". If you think the colour of the tie around the politicians neck makes them "any different" and "suddenly pro-human and anti-profit", you've a lot of learning yet to do.

Buying into the system...

Afford?! In terms of what? Cash, or human labour? If there *has* to be a profit behind it, of course, it will be slow to appear, but that's the same with every technology just now. The system holds us back. It's not human focused but profit focused. And yeah, that brings around some nice new "technologies", but imagine if we just went ahead and choose, as a species, to develop these things, for us:)

Don't change the way you vote, change the fact that you think it makes an ounce of difference if you change who or what you vote for. The system is not for you.

In the states: Bush(snr), Clinton, Bush(jnr), Clinton ( 2nd in Charge ).

If you think that the mouth piece at the top works any different over here, you're mistaken.

Time to re-evaluate the whole thing. As you say, your local MP is decent, hence the reason he'll NEVER be PM. It's a boys club thing, you're either in or out. And when you're in, you realise your masters are not "the public" but "big business".

So, instead of sliding into Tory or any other flavour or nonsense-speaker, why not convince every other one of your friends to make a stance and choose another way:)
