Pope praises Twitter and your 'profound' tweets

Warren G
Facepalm

So predictable

I see we already have two (probably more by the time I've finished typing) predictable comments about Christianity.

Because one couldn't possibly react positively to the sensible things like "don't waste too much time" and "respect other people" the Pope said?

I know some people calling themselves Christians have done bad things, but let's be honest, so have a lot of others, and some Christians have done some rather good things. And I know some people don't believe any of it, but some people do.

So if you're going to comment, why not comment on what he said rather than just having a go, huh?

Wall-mounting

Not a great idea, you're bound to get confused and turn it off when leaving the room.

Especially as the "on" is up and everyone knows lightswitches should be mounted with the "on" down. The numbers on the Belkin are symmetrical but they've shoved their name in the middle so you can't mount it upside down.

WTF?

Been playing around?

Why on the first screenshot when the "fastest" route will take 1:16 is there an "economical" alternative at 58min?

But kudos for the line about it learning your favourite routes, "Give it a longer learn period and your mileage may vary".

Tag

What a great tag: "Disembodied Brains In Jars". Even better is the fact that there is actually another story tagged with it: another one of Lewis's from 2007. Can't help feeling that we could do with more stories with this tag.

So soon?

I thought it would be a while before they admitted the true purpose of these cards.

And of course if you haven't got an ID card it must be because you are guilty of something else, so fetch the nails.

Just so wrong

Even if in your misguided fantasy world (ie government) you wanted to send this sort of card,

1) Too much text

2) Season's Greetings seems to be missing an apostrophe

I know the FAIL icon is supposed to be ironic but what else can I choose?

Jobs Halo

@Matt

Oh yes, don't let me do what I want with my expensive tech, it's not like it's mine anyway. Give me all the limitations of "out-of-the-box" on everything. Ditto installing Linux on a PC that came with Windows, or other such shenanigans.

We should only ever do what Steve Jobs wants us to, hence his halo.

What I really think: For once this isn't Apple's fault. If users can't cope with the idea of changing the default password on a key bit of software then they shouldn't have it.

Facebook enshrines dead people profiles

Warren G
Joke

Not my idea of fun

No way, your relatives should be able to log in and delete your profile.

Sorry, I mean deactivate. Why would anyone want to delete data from the internet? Silly me, sorry, Zuckerberg.

Before long when all the sensible people have deleted their profiles, yes I mean deactivated again, Facebook will be left with just the deceased and rename itself Headstonebook.

Now can Twitter make it so that a deceased account continues spewing trash too? That would be nice.

Europe clears Windows 7 for takeoff

Warren G
Unhappy

Nice idea but

1. If you ship with just IE and later ask users what they want, they'll go "Er, what I've got works..." [perhaps they won't depending on IE]

2. If this is a requirement for them selling Windows 7 it shouldn't ship till it's in there. I can't say "I'll get my licence once I've been driving a few months"!

3. Even if the only time they see IE is the ballot screen, they are forced to run IE, and subliminally told it's normal. Is it that hard to at least use an IE frame in an application?

4. If you let people choose later, will they have no browser? Of course not. They'll have IE, sorry I mean the vendor default, and vendors will be paid to make it IE. Then see 1.

5. If you can, finally, turn off IE, please tell me you don't need it, or get to use it without knowing, for Windows Update etc.

6. The default case should be random browser not IE. Not hard to implement.

BTW the Firefox "pitch" needs working on - the others sound better but are more true of Firefox!

Office 2010 to come loaded with WGA's bastard child

Warren G
WTF?

Viruses and malfunctioning code

Viruses were never so prevalent until Microsoft

- made Office with such "powerful" VBA features then backtracked turning it off by default and breaking all my additions

- hid file extensions in Windows

- encouraged people to use computers without thinking, because they "just work"

As for malfunctioning code, you've got that whether or not your Office is legit. Suspect I won't be the only to point that out.

Now then

You can't complain on both grounds:

Moderatrix to gain even more sinister powers

Warren G
Troll

Eh?

I can start my own website (or own blog, if technically challenged) with no score at all. But adding a sentence to someone else's is a matter for a points system? The method that is always so fair when attempting to obtain credit, apply for a job, etc.?

Look here's the problem. If the initial score is high enough for your comment to be published, get a new email address each time you get banned. If it isn't, no-one can ever post and gain points.

And here's the other problem. The Moderatrix is kind and fair, but other sites could give me a low rating or give high ratings to their friends/trolls/spammers, affecting every other site, with no recourse for the other sites or the individuals.

Opera to take web back to the old days

Warren G
Stop

I don't know what's worse

Either they are using this to make people think they are "running the web" when in fact the routing, terms etc will mean Opera finds out your interests, activities & secrets (cf Facebook, Google)...

or they want to put a webserver on every computer, wasting bandwidth (on ADSL the upstream matters) and inviting a gigantic exploit.

Not sounding good to me.
