I'd rather have 1500 hours of any instance instead of 750 hours if Linux and 750 hours of Windows. Personally I am using Linux but whatever your OS religion most people are working with one and unlikely to want to trial one of each. Give me two instances of the same technology and I can start experimenting with load balancers and more complex architectures.
Food price hikes have recently been attributed in part to greater fuel costs, a fuel tax such as this will only be effective if there is alternative and reasonably priced mass transit infrastructure in place or if the duty is tiered so that fuel for domestic use is higher than fuel for commercial use (although that's political suicide).
I boarded a BA flight from SFO to LHR and was faced with a row full of fried chicken eaters spilling into my seat. Cabin staff were very sympathetic and said they would move me to the jump seat once we'd taken off as the cabin was full. They they returned to say that they had been authorised to move me and led me to the cabin in front.
Ten hours next to some fatties would not have ended well for the fatties but a big well done to BA for taking decisive action to resolve the problem.
Have you forgotten UMA? Orange provide this for anyone with a supported handset and it works beautifully to supplement the signal up here in the frozen north and the dark recesses of our datacenter down south. When wifi is available the phone roams on to this and routes all voice/data/sms traffic over that. It even works abroad so when I am on the office wifi in the US it often switches to UMA at which point I am in the UK for billing purposes.

How is this even slightly impressive? A bunch of middle class tools are running commercial products that were either donated or paid for by Daddy. Not a lot of ingenuity here, if there was they would have rigged up a series of battery powered wifi relays disguised as street furniture that route their traffic back to the free wifi at the local vegan lesbian bean bar.
What a surprise, the cabal at Wickedpedophile don't want to share stuff with Facebook. Is this really news? The typical Wikifiddler looks a little like this: http://regmedia.co.uk/2009/12/23/david_gerard.jpg and wears a tin foil hat and pants to protect their privacy despite nobody really being in the least bit interested in their sad little lives. I suspect most of them aren't on Facebook anyway because they couldn't be early adopters (FB started in Universities) and they can't acquire super user admin powers by being pedantic little gobshites.
I really don't think Wickedpedophile's inner pentangle really has any idea of how the web works any more.
A chap at work asked to borrow 5 identical 22 inch flat screen monitors which he promptly hooked up to several machines and installed Google Liquid Galaxy. Look it up here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atV2foTBbyE and you will see why I was happy to be 5 down on my monitor inventory for a couple of weeks.
SBS LOLZ. It's like the free bag of pills the dealer gives you in the hope that you'll get hooked on harder stuff later on. I love how we have penguin heads talking about how they deal with big environments yet they also talk about USB hard drives for backups; that sounds like a kiddie solution to me but then I've got a little over 30TB to care for.
Let's not forget that there are more risks in a casual relationship than just the prospect of pregnancy. Wearing a condom is still the defacto best way to protect yourself and your partner and any girl who does not insist on this is as foolish as the man who chooses to ride bareback.
A pill for either a man or a woman should be reserved as a backup in case of failure (in which case trust is moot because it's a backup for both parties) or in the confines of a stable relationship where both parties choose to take responsibility for contraception.
Outside of tech circles nobody cares. Some US grubbymint folks want to have a pop at Google because it's a bit too big and anti establishment for their liking, if they can't tame the horse they try to shoot it. Joe Sixpack on the streets of Buttsville, IL, will only care about it when some lamentable old crone on CNN tells him it's tantamount to terrorism.
You can't actually bill the person until you know the journey length anyway so that means you have to wait for the exit tap so all you do is collect the card information at point of entry, check it against a known (locally held, ie by TFL) list of sketchy cards. During the journey you authorise against the maximum possible journey (just like oyster currently does at entry) and then when the person taps out you either compile and send the final bill to the bank or hold that person at the barrier for an embarrassing alternative payment request.
Seems a monkeyload easier than what has to happen on a bus, over wireless connection, as people are getting on a bus.
Our sales team are moving back to Vodafone because Orange is just completely unreliable. I've contacted Orange on a number of occasions and they just shrug and point out that they don't have very good service in London.
In f*cking LONDON!
I could understand if it was in glennowhere in jockland but not in London.
1) uk.gov sets up list of nasty sites
2) Gives away free software* that queries the list and blocks sites on list.
3) ISPs given an ISO standard or important looking logo to use if they sell packages that are child safe. Could probably come out of CEOP budget as they clearly have loads to spunk on useless panic buttons.
4) Grown ups who take personal responsibility continue to use the web as normal.
5) System rolled out to libraries, local grubbymint offices, schools etc - bound to be cheaper than all the individual commercial solutions.
*And I mean proper free. I'm sure there would be support for an OSS project if it provided safe browsing for kids without universal censorship.
India is like one of those south sea cargo cults but scaled up to country size. It's got all the trappings of a real country yet in fact it's just a cess pit full of idiots who think that red tape and government bureaucracy will make them appear efficient. This is them throwing their toys out of the pram because they don't think RIM is taking them seriously enough and giving them enough respect as a sovereign nation.

I know I shouldn't feed the trolls but surely Blitheringeejit can't be serious?
1) .com domains are easy for idiots, sorry voters, to remember. Nobody cares about the rules for domain registration and that's why tonga made a fortune selling off those .to domains because they were catchy. Also, is bit.ly based on Libya? I think not.
2) London is the capital of England and we own all the gash round the edges of the isle. Get over it.
It's all bullshit anyway, the gubbermint are basically allowing the terrorists to keep the US in fear by playing up the threats. Terrorist atrocities happen, it sucks but it's true. You can't stop them at every vector so why not just minimise the impact by not scaring everyone with crap checks that serve no purpose.
Back when the US was busy funding terrorism against the UK we just got on with out lives and eventually we got them all round a table and told them to grow the fuck up, the reaction to bombings such as 7/7 in the UK compared to the many vaporous threats in the US shows just how different we are culturally. Can't the US just man the fuck up?
Oh and on a side note, if a big section of the world is filled with people who are so desperate to hurt you that they'll blow themselves up to make their point maybe, just maybe, you might want to reassess whatever it is that you're doing that's got them so riled. America is the Evil Empire and the 'terrorists' are the blokes in the xwings doing whatever they can to strike back at the bastards who pillaged their land, nicked their oil and left Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru smouldering outside their mud hut.
Can we not talk about Guido Fawkes in anything other than the contemptuous tones befitting a blogger who is about as anonymous as the Stig. The guy feeds out rumour as if it is fact and his readership are happy to accept it because they are the same sort of people, fascinated with the idea of power and celebrity, that read dross like OK magazine.
Surely we don't want Linux to actually be used? Then the Linux admins won't be able to feel superior and might realise that their job is no different, they just opted for the less used OS.
Totally agree with you about webmin or such tools. MS did well to take the same GUI from their desktop product and apply it to the server OS, that way ensuring that newbie Windows folks aren't intimidated by a command line.
No one has answered.. ... my long asked question about how they're going to do this while bandwidth caps exist.
Quite simply the traffic is coming from the BT network so they will not count this in the cap. Some ISPs do this instead of traffic shaping already, they give you a cap for stuff they don't like (peer to peer etc) and not for stuff they want to encourage. My ISP will take a fiver a month off of me and give me 'unlimited VoIP' as a bolt on so that stuff like Skype does not come out of my monthly allowance.
So basically you pay for your web connection and get a cap on that but if you are watching TV (with a separate, premium, cost) you get that down the same pipe but without it coming out of your web/email/p2p data allowance.
It's also quite similar to what 3 do on their phones. You pay for web stuff but get free access to their portal and stuff they want to give you for free (to market other stuff). Networks with their portals and walled gardens have enjoyed multi tier internet since the days of WAP.
Apple releases new stuff to feed the impotent lust of the wealthy thickies.
Nothing to get worked up about, let's just get back to doing something worthwhile while the 'coloured crayon brigade' oooh and ahhh about the jobsian packaged version of something we've been doing for ages.
Stuff like this and the regular entries at http://www.thisiswhyyourefat.com/ are all very fun as a one off experiment from time to time but a lot of our less educated cross pond dwelling colonials seem to think that food like this is OK to eat every day.
Same north of the Great Wall of Newcastle.
The backhaul on the Orange network is terrible, we switched to Orange and have had to disable 3G on all our handsets because 3G service is unreliable. You get full signal but no data capacity because all the cells are overloaded with traffic and the network can't cope.
We spoke to Orange about it and they denied it for a good couple of months and then eventually admitted that they didn't have the capacity for 3G in places like London where lots of people want to use it.
Nice one, Google! Take the desire to link together all those disparate accounts and all that anonymous data and then dress the whole thing up as a 'feature' so everyone is clamouring to give you more information about themselves. Oh look, that student bigballz91@gmail.com who no longer uses their account is now this unemployed person looking for work as john.smith34423421@gmail.com
So they had a buggy device with problems.
MS then started cutting features to try to get something out the door.
The developers *then* started having long lunches and looking forward to their fat paycheque.
Or
They had a buggy device with problems
MS then started cutting features to try to get something out the door
The developers spent more time congratulating themselves on being bought by MS and didn't bother producing a good product because they knew that there was a fat paycheque coming, and besides everyone hates MS so they can always play the victim.
People who spell 'naughty' as 'nortie' are now going to spend a good long time bragging about how them and 'wifey' spend loads on all sorts of nobbly things to spice up their depressing suburban sex lives. These are likely to be the same people who think their 'alternative' lifestyle is a good substitute for an interesting one.
It's not that I don't believe you, it's just that I don't care. If your sex life is so fantastic then why do you feel the need to tell everyone about it? One feels you protest too much.
A Greater Manchester mum is "angry, disgusted and upset"
That should read:
A Greater Manchester mum is "rubbing her hands with glee at the thought of £20,000 from the papers"
It's a toddlers arse, who cares? I doubt even the mythical paedosaurus will get it's rocks off on that. It's much more likely that an uncle of close friend of the family would be adding the mental image 'to the bank' after seeing it in real life - most abuse comes from family members and close friends after all.
