iPad SURVIVES FALL FROM SPACE

@Steve Evans, LaeMing and a host of others

FFS, is this really a techie forum?????????????????????

In scientific usage weight and mass are fundamentally different attributes; mass is an intrinsic property of matter and weight is a force that results from the action of gravity on mass.

Since Force = mass x Acceleration, Weight = mg, where g is the acceleration due to gravity and is measured in Newtons, mass

A falling object is therefore accelerating towards the earth and will continue to do so at initially 9.81 m/s squared. The object be subject to aerodynamic drag (a vector force) in the opposite direction of the acceleration. Drag applies as a log law (go twice as fast and you experience 4 times the drag) and so rises exponentially until the object reaches terminal velocity at which point it will be experiencing a drag (force) which will equal their weight (force).

This drag force is aerodynamic drag and includes form drag (high, iFad is a flat non-aerodynamic surface perpendicular to the airflow), skin friction (low on a nice shiny iFad), interference drag (low because it is a simple shape with propriety rounded corners) and induced or vortex drag (high, see form drag).

Vint Cerf: 'The internet is not a human right'

Field Marshal Von Krakenfart

@GitMeMyShootinIrons

"A proper legal system for a free country should never enshrine rights in law as this is setting definitions on what a person can do"

And why is that such a bad thing?

Rights are not defined by laws, they are usually defined in a construction which is just an aspiration to those rights.

It is also important to establish what rights people have, otherwise you could have the situation where every time the UK elected a labour government they sacked all civil servants who were members of the conservative party and vice versa (e.g. Doretha Vogt who was sacked from her teachers job because she was a member of German Communist Party).

However Vogt was able to take a case under article 11 of the European convention on human rights which protects the right to freedom of assembly and association.

Cerf has it right; the internet is no more a human right than a road or telephone, but that does not take into consideration what society uses the internet for. Increasingly more and more services are accessed online, for example in the last year I have paid service charges, toll bridge charges and I have completed tax returns online. I have also organised a birthday party using online facilities, booking the venue, arranging transport & buying presents. All but 8 of 90+ guests were contacted by email.

The internet has become in integral part of out lives so I think Cerf is wrong in this respect, but just think of it this way, could modern society operate without telephones or roads?

Not strictly true, atheism is simply the absence of belief that any deities exist, for whatever reason.

And why can't file-sharing be deemed to be a religion, after all copyright law is treated with as much reverence as any holy book by the copyright mafia, where anyone who queries any aspect of copyright law is treated as a heretic.

@Steve Evans

"Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the commodore disk drives also completely ignore the indexing hole in the disk and purely rely on reading the disk to work out where they were?"

I think so, 5 x’FF’ bytes were a block separator, some “protected” disks had killer tracks on that that consisted entirely of x’FF’ bytes, as a result the drive would spin forever looking for a block of data, the simple way to defeat this was to slightly unseat the disk in the drive!

The disk hardware supported a 40 track 5¼” disk, however the commodore software only used 38 tracks, leaving 2 tracks free for other purposes like putting the real disk catalog on the 2 extra tracks.

400K on a floppy?? How? 170K per side was the limit making then 340K floppies

Field Marshal Von Krakenfart

The Basic in the C64 was, well, basic. The was a plug-in ROM called Simon's Basic that expanded the set of basic commands to give access to graphics and sound capabilities of the C64.

If I remember it correctly, Gribbly's Day Out had a great sound track (was one of the tracks OMD’s Enola Gay???)

There was also a piano "keyboard" that sat over the C64 and pressed the QWERTY keys and when the matching software was loaded you could use the C64 as a synth!!!

"The model that did more than any to bring computers into the reach of normal folk." - No, that'd be the Spectrum 48K.

Only in the UK. Here I'd be inclined to say that it was about 45% each of the C64 and the BBC micro, with the other 10% Dragons and Atari’s.

Re: programming the C64

Interestingly there was a 12 year old kid who lived across the road from me who used to crack games by hijacking the reboot vector to point to a simple relocatable machine code monitor and forcing a NMI, and write the entire memory out to disk. He now works with open source and wrote a piece of software that I'm sure a lot of people here have heard about, but I'm not going to tell you what it is to protect my anonymity :-)

The C64 wasn’t particularly overpriced, but if you decided to add a 1701 disk drive, a printer and a Commode monitor then the total bill came out at over £1,200, which was an awful lot of money in the early 80's.

Paris, gets POKEd at lot, just like the C64.

Some of these 'theories" are over ten years old, therefore they are not happening now?

The Ken Thompson hack of the compiler is very old but it does serve as an example of what can be done. Just remember that mickeysoft is showing the windoze source code to russian, uk and who knows what other secret agencies, I wonder if any of them are making 'recommendations' about the code?

Spying on telecoms traffic has being going on for years, and backdoors in systems have existed for years, and still do exist. There are even some national security agencies that complain to telecoms companies about encrypted traffic being routed through their country, how do they know the communications are encrypted?

FFS, even DES was fiddled with by the NSA to reduce the number of bits in the key, and when IBM found a way to crack it using differential cryptanalysis in 1974 they were asked to keep the method secret.

While most tech-savvy people will disable WPS, most people won’t, probably the same people that don’t use anti-virus, firewalls etc.

RIM slugging it out with India, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates over access to its encryption

NSA secret back-doors in windows - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/sci/tech/437967.stm

The Ken Thompson Unix back-door. Put code into the c compiler that checks to see if it's making the login command and then compiles in a back-door, then you also put in code so if you recompile the compiler, it adds the code to do this (add the backdoor and add itself to the c compiler) back in.

Personal security.

I don’t know if it’s fair to blame “dumb” users in this case.

The somewhat flawed windows security model has finally come home to roost, 20 years of windows indoctrination have created a culture where people expect to be able to install what ever you want whenever you want.

The increasing number of formats is also contributing to the problem, when I first started working with computers only .bat, .com and .exe file types represented executable code.

I’ve even had the unfortunate experience on my new windoze 7 laptop, I was looking at elReg page with an embedded youTube movie on it when windoze announced that I needed to install a ‘plugin’ in order view the video, then windoze reported that I didn’t have the authority to install the plugin (Hooray!!!) and then asked would I like to upgrade my level of authority so that I could (Boo!!!!!!).

People don’t go out and leave the keys to the house in the door, they lock their cars when they park then and they don’t write their PINs on the back of credit cards.

People have to start treating their computers with the same level of security that would apply in the rest of their lives.

Iran spy drone GPS hijack boasts: Rubbish, say experts

In fact as I am typing this I recall several incidents where commercial aircraft suddenly departed from their planned route because one of the pile-its in cockpit programmed the INS with the wrong waypoint coordinates.

Tech-grunt: "bomb ayatollah assahola airfield, sorry I though you said land ayatollah assahola airfield"

Field Marshal Von Krakenfart
Black Helicopters

@Charles Manning

I’m inclined to agree with you, I can’t see how it would be possible to capture a drone by tampering with the GPS signal, first you would have to capture the signal from same GPS satellites (at least 4)that the drone is using to establish position, rebroadcast the signal quickly enough so that the drone does not break lock, then you would have to start 'adjusting' the signal to change the drone's location (a bit like range gate stealing).

Remember that in order to force the drone down you would then have to move it’s reported position a couple of hundred miles _relative_ to it’s proposed landing site, and you have no guarantee that the drone will be programmed to land at the same site it took off from.

Another consideration is what would the drone be programmed to do if its GPS position suddenly shifted a couple of hundred miles, I know I would build in some sort of cross reference between the INS and the GPS to ensure the two system are in agreement with each other.

All in all, the GPS spoofing attack seems highly unlikely, I suspect that some other attack vector was used to bring down the drone and the GPS story is just FUD.

The 2007 study from the University of Washington was (at the time) a well known academic study of how the copyright mafiaa were detecting so called copyright infringement.

But then why let facts get in the way of your opinion, I usually don’t bother explaining stuff to fucking idiots too lazy to do a bit research or read the article (http://dmca.cs.washington.edu/uwcse_dmca_tr.pdf), but here’s a brief summary just for you.

The researchers at University of Washington monitored the file sharing networks, and even though they were not downloading anything, the copyright mafiaa detected their IP addresses and issued them with over 400 DMCA takedown notices. The researchers concluded that the copyright mafiaa were not actually monitoring what was happening on the networks but merely what IP addresses were visible on the networks.

The report also *DETAILS* how the researchers manipulated I.P. addresses so that three laserjet printers were accused in takedown letters by the M.P.A.A. of downloading copies of “Iron Man” and an Indiana Jones film.

How about Commodus? Groomed from birth to succeed his father on the throne, a weak character and easily influenced by others and in reality he was controlled by his father. His accession to throne also brought to an end a period of time where people got the throne by merit rather than by birth. Commodus also wanted romans to think he was a powerful warrior and to that end ‘fought’ other gladiators in the roman circuses, however his opponents stood little chance as they were armed with WMD (Wooden Military Devices). His government is also considered the most corrupt to have ever ruled the roman empire.

Another possible contender may be Domitian, he was paranoid, developed new tortures and harassed philosophers.
