the icon restriction is silly

Disabling icon selection for AC posts is pointless and silly. It says "Anonymous Coward" beside the post and that's a sufficient indicator.

Remember, Facebook users: you're not the customers. The advertisers are the customers; you're the products.

"safer by design"

Cars are safer by design *for the people inside them* than they used to be. Not safer for pedestrians, cyclists, horse-riders, and people in other cars.

speeding fines = tax on stupidity

The cameras are painted yellow. There are signs ahead of them with camera icons. The only legitimate gripe speeders might have is that speed limits are not as well signposted in the UK as they are in some other places (USA, for example).

I'd give Wikipedia some money if the leaders reined in the deletionists and took a laxer line on "notability".

the usual rip-off

Looks like the usual British rip-off wi-fi that costs (per hour) many times what I pay for a high-speed wired connection at home. Airports in Eastern Europe: free wi-fi. British airports: rip-off. British hotels: usually rip-off (the big chains are the worst; independent ones usually include it in the room rate).

aluminium

Primary aluminium is made using electrolysis, so it has to be electrically powered.

Glass making is done with heat, so it could be powered with gas, electricity, or some other heat source.

WTF?

maildir

When will Thunderturkey support the modern, nicely greppable, more reliable maildir format instead forcing users to put up with the clunky, >From mbox files?

I'm thinking of changing to balsa.

UK.gov may cut BBC licence fee in 2012

Adam 54

the point is to make up for the market's deficiencies

The purpose of public broadcasting is to cover the gaps that the market won't. Remember that the commercial operators' serve their customers --- and the customers are NOT us viewers, but the advertisers.

The BBC hasn't helped its own cause by pandering for ratings, though.

Brown (or at least his advisers) should read Aric Sigman's _Remotely Controlled_ and aim to *reduce* kids' screen time. Give them books instead, and encourage their parents to read to kids too.

Why does it need a built-in backup utility? You just back up "${HOME}/.mozilla-thunderbird"; unlike a lot of GNOME and KDE stuff, that gets all your configurations and customizations.
