Acer: tablets will replace netbooks

LuMan
Unhappy

What??

So, the industry is now telling the consumer what they want. If you want a netbook, then you're wrong. You actually want a tablet (whether you want it or not, apparently).

Can't help but think that Acer are firing off-keel with this one. Shame as I'm more than happy with my Acer Aspire One!!

Dixons warns on crap Christmas

So, more lay-offs, then.

Oddly, despite making over £100m pre-tax, DSG will still lay off a load of staff because "we just can't afford to keep you on any more." They've done it countless times before and they'll keep doing it to keep the shareholders happy. The directors will still get lovely cash bonuses and then head off for a round of back-slapping and smiling at their private clubs.

Haven't shopped there for about 8 years now and I never will again.

UK Man cops to £500,000 iTunes royalty scam

LuMan
Headmaster

The Maths - Nope, not £83.33 per song

Reading the associated articles it appears that they uploaded 20 songs and downloaded them all enough times to spend £469,000 (this isn't the actual royalty amount). This is about £4 per song. Still expensive, though, when most songs are about 70p!!!

'London black cabs to go electric in 2 weeks' – Boris Guardian

LuMan
Go

Size Matters, too!

I reckon it'll be a good idea to try getting black cabs electrified. Swappable battery packs (see previous) have a number of advantages (and disadvantages) but the feasibility gathers more pace if the actual size of the cabs is reduced. On the odd occasion I go to London I see hundreds of cabs with only 1 or 2 people in them. Hulking great lumps of metal they are too*!! Make them smaller and lighter and the efficiency improves greatly. Make it obvious to the customer whether they're good for 3, 4 or 5 passengers and we may be on to something.

*The cabs, not the people!

Christ on a bike! I may not be a big fan of Windows, but why do folk feel they have to complain about something as obvious as this?? Have they nothing better to do?? Obviously not. Makes my blood boil.

Hang on... There's irony here somewhere.. hmm..

Naked cemetery man was simply photographing orbs

LuMan
Stop

We should be thankful

If it gets into the mainstream that orbs are best photographed naked, we could end up with that useless scouse twat Acora wondering around the stately homes of blighty, saying such things as, "Sam, Sam. He's my spirit guide, lah. Ey, Sam. Yu gonna get dat dere spirit orb thing out me knackers!" while totally starkers!

Brilliant!

Yep - total thumbs up from me. After the missus has watched all 15 hours of daily soap opera delivery I can watch decent stuff while she cooks, washes up and paints her nails!

Joking apart, BBC iPlayer is used loads in our house. Any other catch up service is a great bonus. It'll be better once the quality is beefed up.

Irony.. or hypocrisy?

Ignoring the differences between Catholics and Christians for the moment, it seems odd that a group who has had so much media coverage for non-holy actions should start pointing the finger.

So much for the modern Church being open to the views and beliefs of others. And a MASSIVE "shame on you" for the powers that be crumbling like a soggy digestive and cancelling the gig. Totally spineless!

LuMan

Alternatively...

...Sony could release a 'Home Developer' type of kit so hobbyists could create homebrew demos and games to boost Sony's game catalogue and user community. This way legitimate homebrewers and bedroom coders could apply their art without having to use a device that's locked out of PSN. Also, PSN could have a special Homebrew section so we could all show off our wares. Can you imagine how big this community would be?? Christ, it could be like the good old days of the Amiga where folk could once again look on with amazement as yet another coder pushes another envelope of the system. It would be fantastic.

But I can't see it happening (hence !smiley)

It's alarming to think that there are people who will fall for a scam involving a phone call to tell them they've got a virus on their pc, but I can't say that it's surprising. Technofear will always exist and, despite the amount of safe usage information available, folk will still fall for scams of this type. I'm interested to know how the scammers can manage to convince someone that they've got a virus when they ring up. I mean, how would they know*???

As an aside, I remember back in the 80s when our school got its first Research Machines 380Z. We were told not to put floppy disks within 25cm of each other in case they 'caught' viruses that may be on the other disk.... Crazy, but true!

*Just thought of one.. The scammers could claim to be from the mark's ISP.. Still a long shot, though.

Amiga on the block (again)

LuMan
Go

Still going...

The Amiga was, and possibly could still be, the last, best home computer ever. There's got to be a lot of us in the el Reg Readerbase who at the very least may have experienced one and, like me, still get the jitters when the name turns up in modern media somewhere.

Yes, the coders are still out there. Yes, the animators and graphics artists are still out there. Yes, the musical composers who use trackers instead of staves are still out there. And, yes, all modern machines do it better and cheaper. But that's not the point. In my world, using my Amiga to do pretty much anything makes me smile a hell of a lot more than any of my other computers - whether it be playing games, surfing the net or doing something creative. Long live the Amiga!

Tesla says 40% of its Roadsters may catch fire

LuMan

In theory, yes.

In reality very few cars have totally full fuel tanks, and those that do don't have them for very long. So, it's likely that a proportion of your tank is fumes. If you have a fire that manages to breach your tank you'll end up with a lot of petrol that VERY quickly becomes gas... and a big, orange cloud of intense heat. As demonstrated by my mate's 2CV about 20 years ago.
