Re: Every call you make with Skype gets copied to MS servers

To be fair he has a point. The FACT is that CURRENTLY every SKYPE call is copies to MS servers. These laws should they come to pass will instruct other companies to follow suit. So it is you sir, who is reading between the f*cking lines.

Re: "Microsoft honcho pleads with media: 'Stop picking on us!'"

@apjanes - "Personally, I find OS X much easier to use because..." it doesn't crash, I've never had a single virus and the UI is outstanding (subjective opinion). All of which culminates in the honest appraisal that I will continue to use OS X for managing my work and personal data and use a stripped down version of Windows 8 for gaming, until a proper alternative is available.

Using Start8 to boot directly to the desktop. Good solution to a shit experience. Don't use the apps, probably never will. Windows 8 boots faster than 7, overall happy with the speed and stability. Wouldn't use it as my primary OS, for me a Mac is far more productive for the effort expended.

Re: Turmoil - Probably just a rant.

With all due respect - what a load of bollocks. Who gives a flying f*ck about how easy their website is to use?Simple fact is if Dell want to follow Microsoft into oblivion, so be it, they won't be missed. Personally speaking I'd rather build my own servers and desktops, than put up with the overpriced shite companies like HP and Dell churn out. Also I'd rather choose my own platforms too. Possibly a combination of WHAT WORKS FOR ME and not what vendors, fanbois and shills are desperately trying to persuade me to use. So a nice tidy little VMware solution with a range of servers, for a range of tasks, that I can take on and off line whenever I like.

As for open source, developers have been doing a lot of things right lately - ever heard of a story called the hare and the tortoise? PS. get a return key.

Re: So the French courts are ordering Twitter to write code now?!??!

Anti Semitic comments are technically not racist. Jews choose to be Jews, they are not "born" Jews. Jewishness is merely passed on through religious indoctrination from a very young age. For example I could be Jewish but I could also be English white man or an American black man. Jews are not a race. Just as Christians are not a race and neither are Muslims. They are just groups of people who follow a type of religion.

Re: He'll destroy MS

Bought a copy of Windows 8 the other day just to play games of course. I've read pretty much everything I can about it before buying and I have to say it's not all bad. That said the interace is not intuitive on a desktop and it needs rethinking. I think it's going to push people away. On tablets it's probably going to be a different story but the competition is strong there.

On a related note, Steam on Linux (Ubuntu) is outstanding. If the developers support it Microsoft is most definitely going to lose quite a bit of market share. Interesting times.

Re: Feed the children Microsoft crack whilst young....

"I agree, teach them using Open Office and Linux, then when they hit the real world where 99% of businesses use MS Office they will be as useless at that, as many other things you teach them in school."

Yeah or we could just carry on churning out MS Office drones who know dick about actual computing. I suggest you get back to the mid 90's where you belong. The Microsoft Office "era" is over, if our kids need MS Office skills then offer it as a side subject (as we used to with typing) and get this useless shit off the main curriculum for good.

Re: Erm...

Yeah, Team Fortress is good but it's a little old. I realise small steps are required but I would like to see some AAA titles (like Dishonoured) and while I also realise this is down to the game devs themselves, I just hope that Valve are pushing it hard. Personally, I don't want to be forced to use Microsoft products, any longer.

Re: I've been using Linux since mid-late 1993 (Slackware).

It's all well and good this look at how basic my command line tool is crap but some people are visual and need visual environments. The thought of immersing themselves in mountains of super nerd code, makes them want to run away and hide. Personally I do quite a bit of CSS, HTML, JavaScript and PHP and I like to build interfaces that make things easier for your average Joe to get shit done as quickly as possible and go home to a life. Honestly what the hell is wrong with having a decent visual, customisable UI, for crying out loud?

Yep they're chasing shadows.

I keep seeing references to Apple in this comment list about how they're doing the same thing but if you actually look at what's being moved over into Mountain Lion it's all stuff that can be used and is, more importantly relevant. For example: Tasks, iMessage, Notification Centre, Twitter, Airplay (massive that one), integrated sharing - and that's just the preview. Honestly what can you say about Metro that makes you think wow I can really use that, it's really going to save me loads of time? Fuck all.

Kindle Fire?

Yeah but they're a bit shit - shit browser, shit battery, shit plastic case, hardly any memory, shit gesture system, no Google support, No GPS, etc, etc. People are buying them because they're cheap and that's because they have a subsidised price. Sooner or later that will have to end and then they'll go back to being exactly what they are - a mediocre tablet at an average price.

Long term solution

Shift manufacturing to the US and provide much needed jobs and a boost to the economy. If it costs a little more so what, after Apple are making money hand over fist at the moment. Come on Apple lead by example and don't forget it's a perfect marketing opportunity. Being the first big company to produce ethical IT products could start a revolution. Hmmm.... revolutionary now where have I heard that before?

mrweekender
Facepalm

Open source?

Stop spending horrendous amounts of cash on mostly unnecessary Microsoft software. Adopt open document format. Stop taking advice from people who are taking massive backhanders from companies like MIcrosoft or those who are too lazy to find better solutions. Don't go to the same supplier year in year out for the same kit irrespective of the cost. Create a group focused on innovative use of technology but don't fill it full of people who have no understanding of IT or tech types who are too blinkered to see past their own Microsoft certifications. Etc, etc etc.... Not hard really.

mrweekender
Facepalm

So in summary...

No background downloads? LOL.

I keep hearing that iOS is just an app list but what else can it be? If you want degrees of separation from purchased apps and the actual OS, to ensure security and you want a consistent UI experience, how else do you create a user customisable UI that will allow instant access to those apps and not have some sort of list?

Icon/list based navigation is the only way. Metro is essentially just the same thing but with a few live updating widgets, the so called customisation is at the expense of multiple levels of click throughs. This can only diminish productivity as more apps are loaded, after all there's only so many notifications you can have on a smart phone screen, at once.

I've experienced the Metro interface on Xbox and in a word it's unsuitable. I and all of my friends have gone back to using the central button on the remote, to access the quick menus - essentially just lists - to navigate the system. Which further renforces my observations that Metro is just fairly useless eye candy, which is there to promote advertisements and ultimately reduces overall navigation speed. Yes, the apps are a welcome addition but access to the system has become less intuitive and therefore more frustrating - not a good sign.

Excerpt from the WHOLE article - lets not cherry pick now eh?

Fortunately, Apple is willing to refund the bill, despite the fact that the App Store carries a warning at the top of the page for Tap Zoo stating that it allows ‘in-app’ purchases and that users can disable the feature if they wish.

An Apple spokesman said: “We are proud to have industry-leading parental controls.

“In addition to a password being required to buy an app on the App Store a re-entry of your password is now required when making an in-app purchase.”

@Lee Dowling

I agree wholeheartedly with everything in your post and I too have spent a significant amount of my working life fending off the shite that is known as RM. It's a pity that most of the idiots who were managing the BSF/PFi procurement process, didn't do the same. So yes, more OS please, it's time to stop spending ridiculous amounts of taxpayers money on pointless licensing. I don't care what the Journo's say..

..I've got a 3GS and I'll be upgrading. I've used an iPhone for 3 years and IMO it's the got the best smart phone OS to date. Android, while it appears to be more "open", still seems quite fragmented and the phones on offer in the UK do not appeal to me in the slightest. Windows would seem to be a high risk investment (very little app development taking place) with no apparent gain for switching to it.

The specs offered on the 4S suit my needs perfectly, I just hope both the still pictures and the video capture are as good as they say, from the demos it's certainly looking pretty good. The A5 chip is going to allow for faster more complex 3D graphics capabilities and iOS 5 looks like a solid upgrade. Couple that with the iCloud offering and frankly (IMO) there's no other contender.

mrweekender

I don't see what the problem is..

..if you put all of your eggs in one basket - as the saying goes. Same goes for developers who develop exclusively for iOS, not a wise decision either. Given previous experience, sooner or later your world is going to be changed significantly, it's about being agile enough to deal with that or just don't do business with them. It's not going to help the resellers and it's not going to make resellers happy who have stuck by Apple during difficult periods but this is business and it can be ruthless and nasty, especially when you're talking about the vast amounts of money involved. Apple's core strategy is to make money and lots of it, deal with it or get out.

Hell even Microsoft have stopped supporting the first release BEFORE Windows XP SP3 lol. Your comparison makes no sense.

That's not to say Lion doesn't have it's issues but they are in no way on the scale of Vista's. We have Vista machines now that have been known to take up to 20 minutes to log on the network and boot to a usable desktop state. Our Mac's usually take under 45 seconds. We're now in the process of looking at alternatives as we'd like to do some work.
