Microsoft sues family over alleged click fraud

@AC (What ads?)

You didn't pay to access the WWW, you paid your ISP to route TCP/IP traffic. The content on the other end may be "free" (access without monetary donation) or not, but you don't automatically get the right to access it.

Consider this; The revenue from advertising is what keeps the site free. Hosting, bandwidth, and maintenance of content are not cheap. It takes time, effort, and sometimes considerable personal investment of funds. By disabling advertisements, you take a little more of their income away from them, no matter how small.

Next time you go to your petrol station, tell them that you've already paid for your car, so you don't want to pay for fuel to run it, or that the fact that the majority of the energy released in combustion is heat means that you are only paying for the percentage which is used in motion. See how far your "I've paid once, I'm not paying again" mentality gets you.

The thing that concerns me most

Is that Labour will sign with such "poison pill" clauses which make scrapping the scheme MORE expensive than going ahead, essentially with corporations directly forcing the hand of government.

I for one do NOT welcome our new corporate overlords.

@AC (How long before this is made illegal?)

It will never be made illegal.

VPN access is fundamental to secure remote access to network infrastructure, for telecommuting, for secure transactions between financial institutions, for press freedom in foreign (and potentially hostile) lands, etc etc. Making VPNs illegal would be like making modems illegal, as the people who tapped phone conversations in days gone by couldn't understand 14400 baud.

I'd pay for this service. I'd pay more than €5.

Cool (in a nerdy way) seeing how what I would expect to be rigid metals behave differently without the interaction of atmosphere or gravity.

Johnson shuffle returns ID cards to the table

It's easy to see the evidence

Tell him to walk down the local high street telling people that their current passport, driving license, and chip&pin credit cards are not enough legal identification, and they have to pay £95 for a new card which won't work anywhere outside of the country as a replacement for any of those three documents, meaning that they need to carry all four when they go abroad.

Tell them that the whole thing will cost them £90 in Tax before it rolls out.

Tell them that the system will be abusable by humans the same way any other system is (prone to error, tampering, malicious activity), and is not a perfect remedy for identity theft, immigration, or preventing crime.

You know... Honesty. A little bit of honesty for once.

Would you agree, then, that a C2D 2.6GHz underclocked to 1.8GHz wouldn't reduce power draw on the system?

That seems to be the premise of the powersaving features of most modern OS's...

People who don't use alternative browsers don't need alternative browsers.

People who do use alternative browsers know that IE is a dog.

Telling people about alternatives is part of what I call "Job Security" and I'm thankful of it.

Opting Out

From http://www.finextra.com/community/fullblog.aspx?id=2942

"So how do you opt out? Well in Connectivity's parlance you can elect to become ex-directory by :

"texting the letter 'E' to 118800 from the mobile phone you want to be made ex-directory or you can call us on 0800 138 6263. Standard network charges apply. The first time 118 800 contacts you, you will be sent an SMS reminding you about how to become ex-directory. Please allow up to 4 weeks for your ex-directory request to take effect."

Microsoft to bomb Europe with IE-free Windows 7

Gates Halo

@Tom 101

This is exactly what the EU wanted; Internet Explorer- and WMP-free Windows operating systems. Unlike the United States of World Domination, the EU doesn't think its jurisdiction covers the rest of the world. The US, Asia, and Australasia want to bring their own anti-trust case against Microsoft in their specific legal jurisdictions, they're more than welcome.

To think that you ASSUME that EU directive must be fulfilled world wide just goes to show how much we are brainwashed by the US "The World Is Ours" mentality. Microsoft are complying as well they should, and I commend them for it.

Just goes to show...

... It's not just in politics where altruism is overcome by greed and misguided power-grabbing.

"Hey, Wikipedia policy can only be changed by group concensus!" becomes "Wikipedia policy is created and maintained by me. You can all go screw each other."

I'd quit and leave him to admin the site by himself. See how long he lasts. I'm sure Enc. Brit. would be more than thankful for the returning business.

Stop

We are sexual beings

Let us be sexual.

If one half puts the stop on such things, expect folk to go elsewhere! Ease of access does not equate to breakdown in relationships; A lack of understanding, communication, and compromise on difficult issues is what causes relationship issues.

By the way, much like China and Australia, filters can and *will* be bypassed by *basic* changes to a computer.

Unless you want to

- Buy the computer I want

- Pay for all the software I want to use on that computer

- Ensure my privacy is respected on that computer (monitor for infraction only)

- Pay for my connectivity for that computer

you can screw yourself, pressure group.

As long as it's my home, containing my computer, paid for by my money, using an internet connection I'm paying for, you can bet I'll be against this plan 100%.
