is it not sufficient ...

that "Best of The Eagles" has become the most sold album of all time ?

maybe Henley gets very little from that though, thanks to the record company .. seems he's got to be angry at more than YouTube ..

or maybe because he was the least cool Eagle .. as Frank Thomas reminds us of Dennis Leary's quote .. "....... Joe Walsh"

I'm 57 years old .. Eagles sucked IMO .. even brought Joe Walsh down a notch from his great work in James Gang

But I don't mind anyone's work being protected and respected, regardless of quality, however copyright was envisioned to allow works into the public domain after a "reasonable time" for the good of society .. not when the current generation are all long dead, including the author .. and only to Our Children's Children's Children ( am I gonna be sued by Jefferson Airplane now ?)

well that's because we don't have a democracy in USA

Blizzard exposes real names on WoW forums

Flybert

meh

I've had this unique internet identity of Flybert for well over 12 years and it's easy to find my real name.

I am/was the most controversial character in another online/offline game, still have the most popular websites related to it. At the height of that game's popularity and forum *discussions* I had more than one nutcase threaten my life and one in particular blame me for ruining his life for over 2 years, posting such nonsense on as many forums as he could find ( and getting himself banned more on various delphi forums than anyone in history ... lol )

1) Don't post anything you'll regret posting EVER .. assume your real life identity can be found out. Same goes for email unless you've got a signed and legal confidentiality agreement .. I can't believe what some idiots have handed me in insulting, ranting emails thinking I won't use it against them publicly if I were to choose so. That being said, I'm known for keeping useful information secret among friends, and very well known for being a complete asshole if you want to butt heads over something in the venues I frequent .. people don't even try anymore ..

2) Never start an argument on the internet that you haven't already won based on facts. Don't start arguments that are based on opinions alone, unless you know beforehand you have the vast majority of the audience, or the forum owner, on your side. In other words, don't start or get involved with a flame war without a fireproof personality and be sure the fire is set underneath the other guy ;-)

3) Some people think a public forum has a free speech component, however it's the website's owner that .. well .. owns the forum .. it is private property and they have all the rights, not the posters/posers .. forgetting this risks that the forum owner will make you look like a fool and ban your ass so you can no longer respond

there's always got to be a 'panic'

towards the end of the last solar maximum there was an estimated X45 flare / CME that luckily, was not pointed at Earth .. that had the potential to temporarily destroy the Earth's magnetic field on the side of the Earth it hit and let in a huge dose of dangerous radiation , heating up the atmosphere .. causing 300nph winds .. potentially killing 100s of millions of people and a proportional amount of land animals (obviously)

So there is a very small risk, and one we have no control over

The science, however, shows that the extremely low activity in this minimum will translate to a low activity at the maximum .. so the risk is lower than at least the last 2 solar maximums

as far as global warming .. the factor not considered is the increase of relative humidity that has gone right up with the CO2 levels .. which is now resulting in higher snow falls and more rain over all ..

the tie in is that because the solar activity has been so extraordinarily low, the Earth, actually the whole solar system is receiving more gamma radiation from the rest of the galaxy , which, interestingly enough, causes more clouds to form

an Ice Age is about precipitation , not "cold" per se' ..

we are near the end of the warm period of the glacial cycles .. been there for about 8000 years with several fluctuations hotter than it is now .. including the medieval warming period

when we will head back down in temperature to the next big Ice Age is debatable .. maybe it started 3 years ago .. maybe it won't happen for 2000 years .. but it WILL happen

and the advancing ice and cold will kill off a a lot more of humanity, mostly from massive crop failure, than even the worst predictions of global warming effects

the idea that the Earth will keep just getting warmer and warmer, which overall has been a GOOD thing for humanity .. is complete hypothesis .. there is NO historical basis for that happenning .. CO2 levels were many times higher several million years ago .. resulted in the biggest explosion of life in the planet's history .. dinosaurs .. giant plant life ..

you could actually make a case that the ecosystem is CO2 starved .. and there are studies showing that biomass has been increasing significantly because of the CO2 rise .. about 7% between 1990 and 2000 according to UN studies, increase in world wide biomass!

you can make the case that the word wide food supply might be way short if there had not been this increase of CO2 .. when was the last time we had millions starve to death because of lack of food, despite the increase of population ? (other than political and distribution problems)

a couple of severe winters, even one really bad one .. and there would easily be millions starve

ok .. we should prepare for dangerous solar flares .. and to a great degree, critical satellites have been hardened and some planning has been made regarding electrical grids .. that's all we can do, and should

Apple picks death not compliance for open source iPhone game

another thing really

Apple modified the source, adding code that limits the number of times the software can be copied and which kinds of computer device it can be used on

Therefore the added source code, once distributed, becomes Open and released under GPL, does it not ?

Would it not been more clever to sue for Apple's source code for the iTunes version of the software, and then distribute it to the OpenSource community ?

Then could not the community make a *patch* to fix the 5 device (copy) limit and device type restrictions ?

FOSS vendors lick chops over ConLib IT plans

the main point should be ..

public data should be held on secure systems where source code is available so as to verify it's security

Windows and Office are not secure, nor verifiable as secure, and aren't likely to be in the near future .. IMO Windows and it's related software ought to have been disqualified for government, financial and medical industry use years ago, and the people's money put into furthering FLOSS and Open Standards.

It's one thing to secure my own Windows machine, quite another to expect government workers to secure large systems of Windows machines.

Did not Peru make these points a few years ago quite well ?

Dev goes 'Wild' with H.264 Firefox

Flybert

the patent game changes

with a company like Google is defending VP8 and making deals with other patent holders

so while it might be poor practice in general, the company with the most money and many cross complaint patents generally gets it way .. in this case it will be Apple and Microsoft getting the bad press, with Google benefiting at relatively small monetary cost relative to it's profit

Google may be evil in it's own way, but it is way better at public relations as far as open standards and open software are concerned ..

Linux is protected as well, but only because companies like IBM and Google will come to it's defense were MS and Apple *really* want to go at it, and just as much to spite them as anything else .. MS and Apple know this which is why they have not pushed the supposed infringement issues .. empty threats under the circumstances ..

let them be silent for 6 months, reassign them .. we can use all the spare IPv4 addresses

is it a technical inability or political inablility ?

Will Google have its chips?

Flybert

not likely

Google's game is internet services and having as much of the internet both residing on, and passing through it's servers .. it's about capturing the most eyes for the longest time and getting a piece of that .. be it YouTube .. Gmail .. Chrome .. or it's obvious play on online services ..

Google's play with Android is a natural extension of capturing more eyes through more digital networks

It's hiring chip specialists to work with Intel engineers on ARM .. Intel sees the trend and certainly sees Google as better hookup for the future than *Wintel* , where it's already won the x86 game

You think this is bad ?

flight simmers have been waiting for a WWI combat sim with decent gameplay SinglePlay and MultiPlay since Red Baron 3D introduced free server-client software in October 1998, not to mention Red Baron II/3D is still considered the best SinglePlayer Campaign devised, all designed for a Pentium 200MMX with about 4MB minimum video memory

So comes along last Spring, is this Rise of Flight alpha out of Russia where not only do you need to be connected to play *SinglePlay*, but the base game ( about $40 ) has only 2 aircraft

and you need to buy others at about $7.50 apiece .. so now, to have all the planes to fly, it's a $150 deal ! .. and it's got no historical prespective of SP campaign .. no dogfight servers, only co-op and I've yet to hear of a successful 50 player game were RedBaron3d servers have done 76 player stable .. in 1999 !

It's a graphicly beautiful game, great flight and damage models .. but the customers are beta testers paying alot out for the priviledge, and have to worry that if they DON'T support noeqb at this point, the sim will fail and they'll have nothing to fly.

I remember a well designed MotorCityOnline by EA, online only, was great except the netcode and it's security sucked, and cheaters quickly ruined the races .. I think the servers stayed up for about a year .. $40 down the tubes ..
