Sysadmin ignores 25 THOUSAND patches, among other sins

Re: Tech Coordinator

Sounds like a temp job I had at a non-profit school district 3-4 years ago(which got me to quit IT altogether)

Their prior IT director(guy who barely know how to install windows) quit, and someone I know got the job so he called me up saying he needed help fast. I decide to help him.

Get on site to the one school... network cables are thrown on the floor where students walk on them, and roll their chairs over. Actually the one room had a friggin hub flung on the floor that was all bent up with footprints on it, and that was the best part of their network design...

They were wondering why their server was acting up, and randomly failing, and the backup system was not functioning. Their backup system was some proprietary automatic tape library thing that the company disappeared that manufactured it, and the last known software for it was windows 95... Best part this was all stored in the friggin JANITORS CLOSET with absolutely 0 ventilation. I opened the door I felt like I was in some sauna that reeked of dirty mop water. No no reason at all for a server to randomly shut down, and fail.

OK main organizations office's server completely failed(their power line got hit by lightning 2 days prior, and took the server with it)... This one had a working backup system though. Problem is the only thing that was set to backup for 5 years was the backup software's directory... Yup the last admin/IT director did every other day backups of the backup software directory only. They got mad at me that I couldn't restore 5 years worth of financial data...

Next school... This one actually had a decent layout as it was done by an IT company. The last IT director signed a contract with a tech company to have a T1 installed for it. They needed it running for when school started, problem is though the last IT director signed a contract for it to be ready 2 months AFTER school started. Guess who was at fault? yup mine cause some idiot signed a contract 4 months before I got hired... It also didn't help that the principle was a complete fuckin idiot who seemed to enjoy making my life hard. He complained he needed a bigger monitor(he had an 18 inch) so we ordered him the next size up from the distributor we had credit with which was a 22inch monitor. How many people would complain about getting a 22inch monitor? Instead of telling IT anything he instead went and complained straight to the head of the organization claiming we weren't doing our work. I wanted to beat this guy so hard upside the head it wasn't funny.

Next school... Server room is a coat closet with 0 ventilation in the main office. Difference is this school had a principle smart enough to know computers don't like heat so he had a door stop holding the "server room's" door open. This place didn't cause me much issue till their projector they never tested didn't work. Well last IT director had it installed by a company, BUT had the wrong wire ran for it... He had RGB ran for it while the projector they had only had a VGA port on it. Had to buy a long ass VGA cable, and re-run it. Still no where near the pain of the other buildings I mentioned as like I said the principle wasn't completely technologically retarded, and understood it took more then 25 seconds to get stuff working.

Last school was built by me, and my buddy ground up. We picked servers, routers, and did everything to get it running. Only issue I had was some software they demanded for their library that they wanted on the server wouldn't work so I grabbed a spare workstation, installed the stuff on that, and put the computer in the bottom of the server cabinet(yes we bought a real cabinet unlike the others) that was in a climate controlled room, and let it run on that. Also made a script to auto backup all data to the main server so it would get on the tape nightly. I liked working in this building as the only issues that ever went wrong was the teachers couldn't remember their passwords(which were all 12345...)

outside the last school which I built all the workstations were also donations from companies so they were old beat up workstations. I would have to respond to an inquire by the head of the place EVERY single time I needed ANY part as IT depts budget was blown. Thing is it wasn't blown by us the secretary, and her friends decided they all needed $5k laptops, and took the cash for it out of our budget.

Then after we finished they demoted my buddy without notice, and hired some other dude to be IT director. We both quit the next day as I only did the job to help him, and they kept blowing off hiring me as full time(was supposed to be temp to full).

Antiques in spaaaaace! Retired space shuttles cannibalised for parts

Re: Next time: the 8086

They purposely used them as they were reliable, tried, and tested. Lets face it you don't want you flight control computer making a computational glitch when calculating your orbit, or the computer freezing when you are coming in for entry. Its not like they need to run a pretty GUI like desktop users do. Also remember the computer that got astronauts to the moon had less processing power then most wristwatches have today.

I remember reading like 11 years ago Nasa was paying $400 or was it 600 per processor for new 486 SX chips's this was well into the P3 era.

Microsoft's Windows 10 Torrent-U-Like updates GULP DOWN your precious bandwidth

Kevin 6

so for the people in the US with a metered low data cap does Microsoft pay for their internet if they go over the cap?

Like my old ISP was limited to 100 gigs which I was hitting easily per month with steam video games, people watching netflix, and playing MMO's with huge updates(one reason I quit them). I went over the data cap once they slammed me with a $10 fee for every 5 gigs over...

Re: @Turtle @Phuq Witt I sort of agree

Agree

I would have done the same. Well outside shooting it down with a gun I would a got it wet, and dismantled it trashing the transmitter 1st ;)

But as for dealing with the 4 guys yes you have to show you are armed with something to deter people. Trust me I see it all the time with multiple people vs 1 unarmed guy they are more likely to get physically violent when they are in the majority, and have minimal chance for injury.

I bet if the guy didn't have a gun on hand they would have beat the living crap out of him possibly damaging him for life.

'Fix these Windows 10 Horrors': Readers turn their guns on Redmond

Kevin 6

Wow windows 10 sounds really fun... just like getting a full frontal lobotomy.

I'm just hoping more game makers start making more(and eventually all) games so they can run on Linux as Windows is getting worst, and worst every iteration. Hoping Valve pushing steam machines will help this along as video games are the only reason I still even use Windows.

As for the updating breaking things. One MMO I play from what people said worked fine on the preview edition of windows 10, but the final version broke the game.

As for $10 a year for solitaire(I thought this was a joke till I looked it up)... could always go buy a pack of cards, or play one of the thousand free editions on andriod, and not have to look at the unskippable ads. Seriously idiotic I swear MS is just trying to cause a mass Linux exodus.

US Air Force drone pilots in mass burn out, robo-flights canceled

Kevin 6

as someone who works 12 hour shifts I have to ask are the people in charge of this completely out of their fuckin minds?

Everyone I know at work once we hit hour 9-10 our concentration drops faster then a penny off the Empire state building hell people also start having issues keeping their eyes open(work night shift), and the toll is quite high stress wise. Now add in the stress of having to be alert non-stop... honestly they should be in 6 hour shift rotations at max 4 days one week, and 3 the next. Sure they would need more pilots, but the results would be drastically better.

If hackers can spy on you all then so should we – US Senator logic

What we really need is a law that prohibits the ability to staple some other law to a piece of legislation which has nothing in common with the law they are trying to pass..

Scientists love MacBooks (true) – but what about you?

Kevin 6

Re: The view from Silicon Valley

I'm not really sure what IT people have against Macs - it seems to be that they cause fewer user headaches, so less support burden. And, for whatever reason, they seem to get less infected by bad crap (again, lower support burden), the hardware is usually better quality and it retains it's value/usability for a longer period of time.

Try repairing them.

Hint they are not fun specially the new ones where every single damn thing is glued together.

Where I used to work we had Dells if one failed dell sent us a board to swap out so we could get it done fast. Actually they sent us a few extra boards as we had hundreds of laptops which when one died we sent the board back, and they sent us a replacement on the side. All in all if the MB failed on the laptop it took me maybe 15 minutes to replace it so the laptop was down for under a half hour(including diagnosis).

Try that with a new mac book as to dismantle them you need a heatgun, but good luck getting parts for repair you have to send it to apple which can take a week or so.

Kevin 6

Yea my web server/file server (it does dual roles) which runs XP is so unusable that the last time it went down was when there was a power outage, and the time before was another power outage (something like 1 year prior).

My current PC with windows 7 I think has crashed 1-2 times in the past 3 years, and that was strictly due to the software having issues that I was using at the time.

Windows 8 I'll give you that sorta works as it's a royal PITA to get to do anything.

Your IT support sounds mediocre, and needs replacing.

Doom, Mario, Pac-Man level up to video gaming's Hall of Fame

Kevin 6

wtf

"Other games omitted were The Oregon Trail Pokemon and Sonic the Hedgehog, both of whom were nominated but didn't quite make the cut based on their lack of impact on popular culture. "

They are saying Pokemon had a lack of impact on culture? It had way more impact then Doom

Wolfeinstein 3d more deserved to be in then Doom as wolfeinstein pretty much started the 3d shooter craze.

Hell I could ask a pile of people who play games if they ever heard of Doom, and they would say no, but ask about pokemon everyone knows that.

WoW I can only imagine should be in it for going from an epic game to a money grubbing pile of crap in record speed.

Science teacher jammed his school kids' phones, gets week suspension

Kevin 6

What?

"The consequences could have been dire," Pasco County school district spokesperson Linda Cobe told WTSP. "If he was jamming the signal so 911 calls can't be made. It would affect an emergency in the school."

Last time I was in a school working which was 5 years ago they had something we call LAND LINES which could dial 911 in case of an emergency, and even dial the parent when the idiots would act up...

Lets face it if anything did happen we all know the kids wouldn't call 911, and instead be tweeting it, throwing it on instagram, and uploading video to youtube...

FTC to scavengers: Radio Shack corpse doesn't include customer data

Kevin 6

Yea the telephone dealer really irked me I used to shop there often, but got fed up with being asked if I wanted a new phone, and being pestered by employees who didn't know anything. Then there were the insane prices I remember once paying $5 for a friggin blue LED when I needed one at the last minute. Online I was able to order them after that 100 of the same LED for $6 shipped...

Then they reduced all their part inventory to one friggin drawer system... that was when I really stopped going as I had to order 80-90% of the parts I needed from places online anyways why not order all the stuff, and save $10 while I'm at it.

Major US news organisations to develop ROBOT JOURNALISTS

Kevin 6

Wow were getting physical robots that will scour for info instead of what could be done with automated scripts?

Seriously any web programmer could make a script that will scour AP for news, and run a thesaurus on a few words(something a good chunk of journalist don't bother) to change it up a little, and repost it as theirs.

Re: Is it getting worse?

Rimpel in the same boat.

Been reading the news here for many years, and think maybe its time to find a new news site as this place seems to have lost touch with the people who read it.

Kevin 6

Re: El Reg Redesign

Even if the giant pictures actually were for the article, but no they usually are some crap picture they just flung on for the fun of it that has nothing at all to do with the article.

Perfect Example the Bong Ventures LLC: We've been cyberhacked on the side why in the fuck do we need a gigantic picture of a pikachu from pokemon? Its not funny, it has absolutely nothing to do with the article.

Or even the one on printing from a chrome book do the writers here think we have no fuckin idea what a printer looks like?

Alleged Silk Road boss's lawyers want murder-for-hire evidence blocked from trial

Kevin 6

Re: Drug trial

Agree

Only reason I can see them trying to bring the hitman side into the drug trial would be to show what kind of character he has, but still it should not be allowed as it has nothing to do with the current trial.

The attempted murder trial they could use the drug trade side though as evidence as to why he did it though.

BOFH: SOOO... You want to sell us some antivirus software?

Kevin 6

Re: Simple comment...

I remember about 9 years ago a place I worked IT in we had a nasty outlook e-mail virus going around. We spent almost a solid week removing it from the network (we had over 2k computers) right after we finished Our IT director sent out an e-mail to all users saying DO NOT OPEN ANY LINKS IN E-MAILS YOU ARE NOT EXPECTING OR KNOW THE SENDER to all the users.

5 minutes later the idiot opens an e-mail attachment marked IMPORTANT OPEN IMMEDIATELY, and reinfected the entire network... We only know this as the admins installed tracking software, and were actively monitoring who was infecting the network, and it all pointed at the IT directors computer...

HBO shocks US pay TV world: We're down with OTT. Netflix says, 'Gee'

Kevin 6

Re: Unbundling required in the US

I have stand alone internet from comcast, and honestly its not that good, and I keep getting comcast calling, and harassing me at least once a week(even though I told them not to call back) to up my subscription cause for $15 more(for 6 months then $50 more for a year and a half after due to contracts) I could get cable TV I'd never watch, and 10Mbps faster download...

If more places do this like HBO I see comcast enabling the currently disabled data cap(and lowering it), and feeing people up the ass for not taking cable through them.

Qik as mud: Skype adds self-destructing video messages years too late

"Users can also records five-second GIFs, dubbed Qik Flik, to use if they are offline as an answering service of sorts. But you can only use these on Android and iOS – apparently it's going to take a couple of months to get this sorted on Windows Phone."

I find that funny that they can make it easier for their competitions platforms then their own. That should maybe throw some red flags up at MS about their own mobile OS.

US astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson: US is losing science race

IMO it also doesn't help that to get a job in a science field in the US you are expected to be an unpaid slave for a few years as a research assistant to get some of the typical 5 years of experience any place in the US wants from recent grads for that mediocre pay(that is unless you know someone then that is ignored).

Doctor Who becomes an illogical, unscientific, silly soap opera in Kill The Moon

Kevin 6

God this episode was crap

As someone who loves all forms of scifi, and am very used to suspending disbelief to enjoy a story, but this had so many issues on the fundamental level it wasn't funny it was down to the turn off your brain completely, and look at some crappy action level that even most B rated SciFi movies don't get down to.

1st issue as other pointed out they are on a shuttle in space, and have gravity prior to getting near the moon...

The shuttle has nukes... The question is WHY? seriously they were complaining about how the egg hatching would destroy the moon, send fragments of the crust flying at the earth devastating it, and the mass loss would affect the earth, but they came to the moon with nukes to blow it up... seriously?

They complained how the extra mass was causing issues... but like others said making kentucky fried dragon would magically change its mass? Also how was that slight increase in mass adding full earth gravity to the moon?

One other thing on the nukes how did they magically know they had enough nukes to even hurt it? Lets face it the creature was some space bearing animal... Wouldn't its skin be pretty damn thick to survive solar radiation? Hell the nukes might have been more akin to feeding it then anything, but nope 3 last astronauts (even though they stopped training astronauts many years prior) were sent with nukes that could just been launched from earth without the shuttle, and hoping the people carrying them survive bit...

Then there was the issue I had with the annoying school girl... Why in the world did she have a spray bottle of disinfectant? Was that actually ever explained? do school kids in England all carry bottles of spray disinfectant around with them?

Hell even the spray bottle not working later on theoretically as the best I can figure out when Clara needed it while on the moon surface it should still work as a ball valve pulls the water liquid up... just the contents should have boiled out due to how liquids act in a vacuum, but this should have happened by the time it was 1st pulled out though as it was already exposed to space. But instead the Dr says no air...

Throw in some crap about abortion....

Finally back to the moon hatching... Why did the shell vaporize? Last I looked when things hatch the shells don't magically disappear. Also what was that crap about things don't destroy the nest? There are plenty of creatures that destroy what they are laid on/by hell a good number of things that hatch FEED on what they are laid near. Just look at insects.

How does something newly born reproduce asexually, and lay an egg bigger then it

Then there was the generally poor script on top of all of it... I've seen better scripts on B-rated horror movies.

1 of those thing sure, maybe 2, you could suspend belief enough, but the script writer couldn't even be arsed to look up how much the friggin moon's massis, and multiply it by 6 to even get a believable number.

I think I'll give this 3-4 more episodes then if it don't pick up just quit watching it as the script writing is abysmal.

Sory if I just went on, and on to a rant, but seriously this episode just was idiotic.

Marriott fined $600k for deliberate JAMMING of guests' Wi-Fi hotspots

Kevin 6

Re: Time for guests to sue

IMO they should have been forced to refund all their past guests the fees for internet usage they paid from when they started this scam on top of the 600k fine.

This fine is more a slap on the wrist like BAD were only gonna take .1% of what you made off this while the common people get cheated.

As bankruptcy looms for RadioShack, we ask its chief financial officer... oh. He's quit

Kevin 6

Ditto. Went in so many times looking for something simple like a simple SPST switch, a common resistor, or a capacitor just to walk out empty handed as they reduced all their electronic parts to 1 drawer system that is mostly empty, or had 1 of anything in it.

Then IF you find any parts you have to get bothered why they try and sell you a cell phone during check out...

I found ebay very nice for parts, and usually 1000% cheaper for almost anything. I remember when I needed a single white LED Radio shack wanted $5... I got 100 from china for $10 WITH 100 resistors shipped...

Needed a soldering iron as my old one(which was a radio shack brand) crapped out after 13 years of service they had one damaged one on the shelf that looked like someone stepped on it...

It also drove me nuts how they would tape up parts people opened or returned.

Wish I could say its sad to see them go, but they pretty much been trying their best to go under

Raspberry Pi B+: PHWOAR, get a load of those pins

Kevin 6

I actually have a similar experience I bought 2 B's a few months ago(seriously would have held off if I knew the B+ would have came out 2 weeks later...), and the one keeps corrupting the OS install every few boots which I find is quite aggravating(I use it in a 1/9th scale arcade machine).

I know its not the SD card as I ordered 3 of them at the same time, and my model A has had no issues with the same card(or others in the past), the other B I really am not sure on as I set it up to function as a NAS that I've yet to leave online for any time.

And once I reinstall the OS its all good to go. I've had SD cards corrupt, and go bad so I know how to tell a bad card as they would not work like normal which the card that keeps getting corrupt allows.

Nah some local police would have thought it was a bomb, and called in the bomb squad to blow it up in a controlled manner. In my city a few months back a homeless guy forgot his bag, and they cordoned off the neighborhood for 4 hours before the bomb squad saved us from a homeless guys clothes...

Kevin 6

Was a great service (up till about a year ago) have been missing it for awhile as I used it to redirect my domain to my web server which runs on dynamic IP.

Been thinking of looking for another service since. If I wanted to pay $25 a year I could just pay a cheap web host $2 a month to serve the page and just take my personal web server offline... $5 a year I would have considered, but their service is no way worth $25 a month

Battling with Blizzard's new WoW expansion and Diablo revamp

Kevin 6

Wow...

To me Wow is dead, and died the day Mists of Pandaria came out.(well actually prior to that, but I decided to look at the festering corpse for 2 months longer)

They dumbed character builds down even farther then they did prior in Wrath(or was it the exp prior I forgot). In Wrath they removed the option to put say 5 points in one tree, 10 points in another, and whatever in the last where you could be a pure hybrid which worked well for certain classes to where you had to pump one tree to max then you could put a few points in another to as they put it at the time give players more options, which was by limiting their choices(yea the logic makes no sense).

From that dumbed down edition they went to what I deemed the mentally handicap choices where you got to choose one skill out of 3 every 15 levels... and those skills only one was of any use, and the other 2 were essentially complete crap to as they put it give players even more flexibility... Yea more flexibility by completely forcing the builds so players are carbon copies of each other.

Then they claimed prior to pandaria they were removing the rep grind, just to make the rep grind even more tedious, and time consuming then before. So yes I will really believe blizzard when they say that the instant level 90 for $60 is not a sign that they are not going pay 2 win(was stated in another story I read last week)

The game got so fun that the guild I was in which had over 50 members, after one month of Pandaria we were down to only 15 logging in as the others quit, and I dunno after that cause me, and my buddy who was a guild officer canceled out subscriptions and never went back.

Instead we went to Guild Wars 2 which I find not as good as wow was back in the day, but way better then it currently is, and best of all has no monthly fees.

Diablo 3... Another huge disappointment, and a blatant cash in. IMO the game was designed around the Real Money Auction House as the gear that dropped was never good enough for the area you were in. I got halfway through Inferno before quitting, and never going back. Got sick of farming the same boss for days at a time to hopefully get an item that was useable at my level, or gain enough gold to buy one of the AH... Will say my friend lucked out as he sold one of the items he picked up on our farming sessions for $120 on the RMAH which he jokingly threw up there(and almost crapped his pants when it sold).

Even StarCraft 2 game was worth no where near what they charged, I found WoL so poorly done I didn't bother with the zerg one.

I used to be an insane Blizzard fan, and honestly loved every single game they had, and sank a good portion of my life into playing them non stop, but the past few years they just lost their touch. Maybe its Activisions presence that destroyed them as that was around the time they seemed to drop in quality.
