Re: Old Android Phone + Arduino

Well, quite a bit as it happens. A few years ago, I was one of the first to do host mode on the HTC Desire, a video demo of which you can find on my YouTube account. However, I wanted to build a robot that would be portable and super fast to prototype in, which is why I chose Javascript.

Re: just needs to fit one of these ...

Yeah, I saw that! The one I have and plan to attach is only 100mW (10% power of that kriton beast) but easily enough to blind at short range. It will be used for range sensing, however(!)

Re: Old Android Phone + Arduino

Yeah, all the hardware is there but it would have been a real PITA to program. The purpose of it being built in Javascript is that the coding is easy and therefore I won't get furious trying to work around undocumented proprietary hardware drivers, which is what many Droids are full of :)

Paris Hilton

yeaaaah, but also, noooo....

saying "given that they are there, what is the probability of finding them" is not the same as "what is the probability they are there and that we also find them". the universe is very large and we are aware of only a vanishingly small amount of it, so the likelihood of there actually being anything in the bits we can see is thus also vanishingly small. i would argue that your use of "littered" is really rather optimistic, even for the el reg alien hunting desk...

The actual number of codes generated by these devices is alarmingly small. They are hopelessly easy to hack if you have the skillz. See here: http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~sjm217/papers/fc09optimised.pdf

They are no real protection at all.

i recently had to expose a family friend as i caught her working on fake porn sites designed to siphon off credit card numbers via my family home's 'net connection. needless to say, she's not a friend any more; it wasn't pleasant to do but i won't have my family put at risk by scum like that.

as for the wider world, anyone taking on this kind of employment is actively working toward the death of freedom on the internet. don't do it - you are shitting on your own doorstep.

Woman finds Romanian living in shed

Ray0x6
Welcome

Cops first, ask questions later

Frankly, I'm surprised this hasn't happened to more garden-owning citizens. The number of people hiding in sheds these days is staggering, it really is almost zero. Unbelievable. I have found vagrants living in my shed not once, not twice, but no times at all! Of course, my first reaction upon discovering that there is nobody living in, nor complimenting me on my shed is ALWAYS to call the police, especially if the persons I haven't found are Romanian and they have been doing my recycling. You can't be too careful, these days, I say. I would really like to see some government legislation on this (although there is a fat chance of that before the General Elections!!!??)

communication breakdown/clearing my name

@all replying to Ray0x6 - you are not replying to me, but deity - he used my name as the title of his post. i had also written a reply to him/her, but eventually didn't post it because there is no point arguing with people who choose to believe stuff that is patently false.

@Mark123 - you are replying to me, but i started my post with the following statement: "i'm no road user - neither cyclist nor driver". it should be fairly obvious therefore that i, like you, am a pedestrian, but that wasn't what we were arguing about.

cheers.

reg motortards hating cyclists

it's actually a bit disappointing. i'm no road user - neither cyclist nor driver - but i find the degree of animosity levelled against cyclists by drivers astounding, particularly on these pages (which i normally consider reasonably free from such base, idiot rhetoric). don't the drivers amongst us realise that cyclists are legally bound to share roads with motor vehicles? i'm sure the cyclists wouldn't wish to, given a choice - but they don't have one. can't the fearsome motortards railing against these fleshy, lightweight co-commuters display any degree of empathy toward their fellow travellers? drivers ride in a powerful, half tonne or more of steel and aluminium at no physical risk to themselves, unlike cyclists who risk death from angry motor manoeuvrings daily. many, many times in my city have i seen cyclists forced from the road or hit by buses, lorries and fucking idiots driving bmws. cyclists are quiet, non-polluting, non-congestion causing and inherently less dangerous to other road users (unless you count the danger to the cyclists themselves. from whom? why, motor vehicles, of course). so, who has the most to lose, and who has greatest potential for damage? who here is doing the shouting? who is concerned they may lose their no claims bonus because they didn't open their eyes and look? what a worry that must be!

it would seem to me that the only reason for such invective to be directed against cyclists is that cyclists simply prevent drivers from getting to where they are travelling quite as quickly as they otherwise might - thus rendering the single, self-serving, narcissistic reason for owning a motor vehicle obsolete. no wonder it pisses you off. you spend all this money to get somewhere really, really quickly and then somebody gets in your way. big fucking whoop - my heart drains blood for you. as for the road tax argument, AC, that is total, total bullshit. road tax goes toward maintaining the roads - cyclists don't wear them out, cars and lorries do. end of story. cyclists may be an inconvenience to you as drivers, but that is all. you will still get to where you are going, and in comfort. get over yourselves, show some patience, show some respect and behave like fucking human beings, you simple-minded, self-obsessed cocks.

Sony snubs Microsoft in Google Chrome browser deal

Ray0x6

sony

vaios are among the worst laptops i have used - only beaten to this prestigious accolade by the hated packard bell. even acer and dread compaq do better nowadays. vaios represent an awful user experience, pre-loaded with more unnecessary rubbish than a gateway. the build quality is sucky and the machines require proprietary software to function properly - just like their shitty website. cheap cheap cheap. chrome, great as it is, will not improve their offering (and will probably fail on their support site). i am only slightly heartened that david has managed to get linux working on one. tried this a few years ago with a friends' machine and wifi was a total fail. never buying one.

grammar N(a)Z(i)

This lady seems to have received a bit of a lambasting over her grammar as well as her truly unfortunate lack of netiquette but her email subject line is, at least, entirely grammatically correct. There is nothing wrong with using "I/we/you do follow" as a declension the verb "to follow". Also there is nothing wrong with the order of the phrase "the below check list" as in this case, "below" is functioning as an adjective.

I do, however, agree that her phrasing is a little unusual and could perhaps have been arranged a little better, at least in order to avoid the slightly odd and confused-sounding combination of the words 'below' and 'follow'. I would maybe have gone with something like the following (ha!) sentence:

"To ensure your staff claim is processed and paid please observe the following the check list".
