Opera for iPhone: The review

Dan 10

Workaround

Could you work around this with a custom search? So appending any search with a string for google.co.uk?

I've not downloaded it yet, so haven't tried - just a thought, that's all.

I expect that now Opera know that their browser is actually allowed on the iPhone, we'll see some good further efforts to refine the product.

IBM job cuts go compulsory

Dan 10
Go

No problem yet...

IBM periodically goes through this process, and it's often about getting rid of either 'dead wood' or those that simply earn too much for their role. (See the bit about getting more than 500 voluntary candidates, but still going to compulsory - they didn't the 'right' 500 volunteers).

If your hiring manager has headcount, then that's probably fine.

Also, not to take anything away from my fellow commenters, but be wary of seasoned pro's - cynicism is rife!

A multitasking iPad? Let's bin the netbook

Dan 10

Wrong Question

I think the author has asked the wrong question. The iPad itself isn't the deal-maker/breaker - it's the apps. Look. All Apple have done is look at the app store and go 'sheesh, these iphone/ipod touch devs have written all sorts of stuff which we didn't anticipate - everything from novelty crap to remote clients, graphics apps, you name it. And hey, the users are lapping it up! Hang on, what's the key hindrance to further innovation? Oh, right, that diddly little screen. What if we made a bigger one?"

So, the better question would be "What apps would make you buy this thing?"

And yes, I well appreciate that the appstore approval rules are on the overzealous side, but this is actually 1 problem, with the solution having 2 different consequences - having an approval process and strict resource usage rules etc is partly the reason that the iPhone/iPad OS is yet to be exploited. Clearly, the modest-powered hardware also necessitates efficient use of resources, which would go out of the window if they simply let anyone install whatever they wanted without any vetting. The fact that useful stuff which just happens to disrupt Apple's business model is also rejected is merely a casualty. The question is whether you are willing to accept that casualty.

How a Tory gov will be the most tech-savvy in history

Dan 10

The Wired article had more substance

I'm surprised no-one has commented on the article in this month's Wired magazine about the Tory web machine. That was quite in-depth and informative, and demonstrated that, amazingly, the Conservatives actually 'get' the internet. Not at a tech level, obviously, but enough to employ the right people to do it properly, give them the right level of funding and let them get on with it, which is more than can be said for most government IT projects.

Admittedly, the above article is caveated 'comment', so it's allowed to be an opinion piece rather than an unbiased article, but I think the level of trust for anyone with 'MP' after their name is so low that it struggles for real credibility.

Apple uncloaks deep details of its 11 iPad apps

Bravo!

That's some rant you got there - I like it.

Kinda reminds why I need to get out of the corporate world and back to an innovative tech start-up. Whether I'll buy an iPad or not is unknown, but the Apple has managed to go from niche tech manufacturer to the premium maker of consumer electronics devices, I bet it would be cool to work in product management or something at Cupertino.

Define possession

Re cache files etc - how do you define possession of the offending material? If he delete's it, but doesn't permanently delete it, then a savvy defendant could argue that he had deleted it, DESPITE the fact that in reality, this fictional defendant happened to be into that kind of thing, and knew he could just delve into his 'deleted items' in Outlook in order to view it again.

Apple details iPad's 'breakthrough' mobile contract

Dan 10

Glass half-full or half-empty?

I see where you're coming from, but my reaction on hearing of the battery death policy was "So provided I look after it*, when the battery dies after 2 years*, I can just sync it, then get a new one for $99?!** Sweet!"

* = My iphone isn't scratched after nearly 2 years, purely because of the aftermarket protective covers etc, you just know these will also spring up for the ipad.

** = No, I'm not in the US, but obviously we in the UK don't have pricing yet.

PS. I'm not saying I will get an ipad - this thing will make or break (probably make) on the apps - so I'll wait and see what it's used for.

Apple aren't perfect by any means, but I think you're hating them for the wrong things. Fair point about default settings for backups on iTunes though. I was a little surprised when I found that one.

The Cold War

So kids, the moral of the story is that provided you're big enough to have a few nukes to aim at other companies, you can get away with thieving IP because they won't nuke you. Nuclear deterrent and all that.

However, if your company is too small to have an extensive patent portfolio, say, maybe you run a small, innovative software house with loads of cool ideas, you can't play in the same park. You need to play by a completely different set of rules and ensure that you come up with something truly original.

(Bear in mind that unless you're inventing a complete game-changer, chances are the marketspace you're playing in is probably dominated by one of those bigger firms. Be careful!)

What's that Skippy? The bigger companies have an unfair advantage? Say it ain't so!

Employers call for end to Mickey Mouse degrees

Dan 10

Interesting point

It winds me up when a job ad insists on a degree, any degree. If they caveat it with 'or equivalent experience', I'm fine. Does this then mean that failing to add this caveat is discriminatory?

In my first job as a support tech/sysadmin, I had to train up a graduate who came in as my senior, fresh from a another support tech role elsewhere. He dutifully watched while I showed him round the AS400's, the NT domains etc etc and explained the architecture. He went away, then came back later... to ask me how to create a user account in NT. Men lie more in online dating - except about their weight

Dan 10

Best thing I did

Having met my wife via match.com, I even told the story in my wedding speech. The older generation raised their eyebrows, but I explained that in a world where professions are becoming increasingly specialised and people are working ever-longer hours, it is becoming difficult to meet potential partners. There was a reason that when I tried speed-dating, the majority of the girls were teachers, and they told me that the guys were mostly in IT. Yes, there were all (mostly, anyway) normal people, but in your parents day you met at work or lived in the same street. Online dating is a way to be completely honest about who you want to meet and why, without spending ages buying people drinks in a dodgy club.

Android app brings in $13K a month

Dan 10

Not sure I agree

I don't know what t's&c's are in place on the Android app store, but the idea that a one-man band can write an app, get exposure and retail means for it in a pre-provisioned store, and (on the iphone equivalent, at least) still get to take away 70% of total revenue is pretty impressive. I'd quit my job if I thought I could make $13k a month. I'm rubbish at programming unfortunately, as my tinkering with the iphone sdk has reminded me.

Admittedly, a proper software outfit can obviously throw more resources and a marketing budget at their app, but that's life, I suppose.

Legality?

I'm not the person to ask about this kind of stuff, but maybe you lot can shed some light on it.

A publicly-funded organisation, which we have little choice but to pay for (ok, strictly speaking this is wrong, but you see where I'm coming from) mandates that all users need to use specific technology provided by a third party, to the anti-competitive detriment of competing third parties.

Furthermore, when those third parties adapt their product(s) to ensure continued operation, they are then sued by the favoured third party, preventing access to a state-run asset by any means other than their own.

This seems out of order to me. Thoughts?

Researchers rip iPad apart to reveal Apple's profits

Dan 10
Thumb Up

Yep

And the thing that interests me even further is this: People keep talking about the ipad only being for 'consumption' and never creation, but look at the apps for the iphone - despite the small screen with so-so resolution, there's all kinds of little painting and graphics apps etc. I'm not that impressed with the ipad so far, but the crucial thing isn't the device itself; it's what the app devs will do with that bigger screen. I reckon the naysayers have jumped too early.

Researchers penetrate last bastion of Windows security

Dan 10

iStuff

My thoughts exactly - there isn't a single decent exploit for the iphone OS yet - the vuln published the other day still relies on a phishing-type approach (i.e. click here to be hacked, stupid user!). Presence of Flash could potentially blow this right open.

Come to think of it - is Jobs paying this guy to make his point for him?!

iPad runs Windows, Nokia runs OSX

Dan 10
Thumb Up

Other stuff

I agree, this just presents a backup option when Apple refuse to let something into the app store. Example, I'm trying to sort DLNA infrastructure for my media at home, and having a wireless connection to a WHS or Mediacenter could wouldn't be that snazzy on an iphone due to the screen size, but this (or just an RDP connection) could put all the library management etc in my living room without bothering with a laptop.

I think the ipad naysayers may have jumped too early - it's all about the apps, not the kit.

Dan 10
Paris Hilton

Eh?!

"1.5kg weight" - 1.5 lbs, surely? IIRC, Apple describe it as 700g. That's doesn't seem too much.

As for Flash, I can't decide. It is a bit crap, but nonetheless a lot of sites use it.

As for whether this thing will be worth owning anyway, I have no idea. It probably all depends on how over-zealous the appstore approvers are, since that will, in part, determine what kind of stuff the device can be used for.

Paris because without Flash, there's less pr0n.

Dan 10

OA/app segregation

Actually, that wouldn't surprise me - I've bought a few apps which turn out to be resource hogs, and most users might perceive this simply as 'my iphone is running dog-slow'. If Apple intended to run the OS, phone, alerts etc off one core, and apps off the other, it would seem blatantly obvious what was performing well and what wasn't. Either that, or it's all about allowing multi-tasking instead.

Sure, they could continue with the same operating model, but then dual-core would only be any use when an app had been coded to be multi-threaded, and that requires properly thought-out app design. A sizeable number of the apps are thrown together, and I see no reason why that will change.
