Apple iPad 3G 32GB

A-GPS

In short, yes. Knowing approximately (and quickly) where you are fom the phone towers is an advantage as the orbital data should be known - i.e. it know which satelites it's looking for. Also can glean more accurate position by using the network's timing signals.

Took the words out my mouth

"If you bought a WiFi-only iPad and, in six months' time, someone offered you 3G functionality for an extra £100, the chances are you'd jump at it. Best to make that choice now, while the deal is still on the table."

As fatgit implies, the deal will most certainly be in the table in six months. True it may not be as elegant, but by far more versatile.

Animated CAPTCHA tech aims to fox spambots

FAIL

re: Doesn't seem to solve the problem - but it slows it down

The sweatshops of people will have their productivity hampered (or so goes the theory) as the red text doesn't appear immediately. So say it takes a second to "solve" a normal CAPTCHA, it now takes 2 seconds including scrolling time.

There's still a flaw in that they can quite easily just introduce an assembly-line style to the operation in the sweatshop. i.e. if it's a consistent delay. Even if it's not a consistent delay, just show multiple ones on screen that can be solved when ready.

The fail is aiming at the idea, not anyone's post :-)

Late 90's

"First off, it may seem like a huge size right now, but won't for long. I recall a late 90s columnist wishing for a drive so unimaginably big that he could drop a file in and hear the echo when it hit bottom. He was talking of a 2GB drive"

That must have been very early late-90's. In 1996 my PC had a 1.6GB drive and wasn't top spec.

Hard disk growth is a logarithmic growth and is in keeping with predictions for the moment:

What's skewing the data is the shift to 2.5" form factor and SSD development.

I'm a model, y'know what I mean?

A "model" is defined as a smaller or larger physical copy of an object. Fits the description quite nicely, yes? :-) Technically my R/C F1 car is a model and a toy.

If you're in any doubt about the detail that Hornby go into these days, would suggest trying their Live Steam range - none of that electric motor nonsense!

You can never really KNOW that you've decrypted something. With the right (wrong) key it's possible to decrypt the ciphertext into a brand new plaintext that has nothing to do with the original. The odds of this being possible the closer the key length is to the plaintext length.

Bluetooth: wireless wonder or digital dead end?

Annihilator

Headsets

I don't have a problem with bluetooth headsets per se, I have a rather nice Jawbone myself, but rarely wear it outside the home/office environment.

The biggest problem with bluetooth, or even wired, headsets is the idiots who use them without realising that you DON'T have to hold the phone out in your hand while resisting the urge to hold it close to your mouth and with wired, you DON'T need to hold the mic while you're talking. The tw@t-o-meter goes off the scale when both these techniques are used simultaneously. It's called "hands-free" for a reason!

There's also a very strong argument for suggesting that the likelihood of someone using a headset in such a manner is inversely proportional to the importance of that person, but directly proportional to their self-inflated perceived sense of importance. See phone holsters strapped to the belt for details.

More for less

I have noticed the revised iPhone contracts for O2 are rather worse than before. Previously, the 18 month, £35/month bought me 600 minutes. Now it would buy me 300. But it would increase my texts from 500 to unlimited (whoopy, I imagine there's a hidden limit like there was before).

It took you 3 hours to get served??

This would be O2's devious scheme to keep the hype up. The O2 store I saw today were letting people in 2 at a time, apparently for about 10-15 minutes.

Funny thing is, when I got a 3G when the hype doesn't exist, they were able to upgrade me in under 5 minutes.

Well it wouldn't be able to track via GPS as it's passive, and if it's the non-3G/GPS version there's absolutely no chance.

However (if the 3G model was nicked) as a mobile device, it surely has an IMEI and can be added to the mobile blacklists.

Collective effort

You'll find that individually, not that many are making much of an effort to get it. Me, by myself, visiting a website to try and purchase one does not make me crazy. Collectively, it looks like a mad rush, but that's hardly my fault. If the website is slow-running, or generates an error, I'll probably try again. It would be stranger if I gave up at that point, and rather defeatist..

Apple iOS 4 update due today

akamai

The Apple stores pump out their content via the akamai network which is optimised for this sort of thing. I don't think I've ever seen them fail to send out an OS update, much like Microsoft's patches.

For a website to struggle under massive volume is not uncommon - they will never scale their infrastructure for that sort of load as 99% of the time it will be unused, so not sure why it was ever a story.
