Who ate all the iPies?

SuperTim

I agree*

* apart from it being an intergral part of some sites. Also, there is no other alternative that does work on an iphone or ipad (silverlight doesnt work either). You dont miss it because you dont know what it is that you are missing. Farmville is crap to most people, but some people actually like it (Shock horror, other people exist!)

restricting consumer choice was to help apple, not consumers.

I'm sorry.....What?

"Not that it's all Apple's fault - the company has responsibilities too. Responsibilities to developers who don't want to rewrite their applications, responsibilities to shareholders who want to maintain the customer lock-in that iTunes represents (which is why Flash can't be allowed). "

Apple's responsibility is to get the best value for its shareholders, not just stick doggedly to the sales model it has. If they equipped the ipad with more capability, it may actually be useful and sell more units. Flash CAN be allowed, they just dont want to give people the option of running something non-apple authorised on the thing. Correct me if i am wrong but OSX runs flash doesnt it? I gather if they reduced the functionality of macbooks overnight, sales would fall of a cliff.

So an interesting observation, but just cupertino flavoured bollocks i am afraid.

Now, when Geohot has stopped dicking about with PS3s, maybe he can arrange for the iPad to actually be useful.

Windows 7 upgrades Vista laptops to lower battery life

SuperTim

It happens....

New software on older hardware brings this stuff up sometimes. Didnt happen to my tosh laptop which continued as it had under vista. It is just a tweak after all!

Next from Apple: The Pocket iPad

SuperTim

Whoa....

That sounds BRILLIANT!!!!!! I cant wait for it, my iphone just doesnt cut it, but if i could get some kind of smaller tablet with a phone in it and seriously reduced battery life, i would snap it up!

I hope that someone thinks of bringing out some kind of portable record player that allows me to listen to music on the move, maybe using some kind of proprietry in-ear speakers.

I must admit, i dont know where technology is going next....Fire, the wheel, Elastic-trickery....Amazing!

Second US man admits DDoS attack on Scientology

you'd think.....

That after 75 bazillion years on planet earth, xenu would have figured how to prevent a DDoS attack. Hmm, i am starting to think that some of their dogma is not entirely based on fact.

Still i am sure that some of their "auditors" will soon put me straight in their own inimitable style.

Wait.... I think there's a knock at the door......

Entire UK will be on ID database sometime in next 3 millennia

FAIL

Growth rate...

The ONS says we grew by 408000 last year, so about 370,000 more per year than are applying for ID cards. At this rate the percentage take up will actually go down!

Good work HM Gov.

New music file aims to sink piracy using blogs and Twitter

SuperTim

Sound great....

i can still play my "backup" Mp3 files on any new device that features it...... Not sure that i am bothered about the whole "bonus" features of the new format though. Lyrics? dont care..... Tour dates? dont care...... Pretty pictures? dont care.

And since when would they "update" the information anyway? I cant see a band updating any content other than pushing tour tickets. It would be money for nothing (no pun intended, dire straits fans).

so all in all, it doesnt actually stop the piracy, it merely attempts to get people to pay for the track because it contains stuff you can get for free from anywhere.

SuperTim

ISO9001?

All that would tell you is that there is an auditable trail and documentation for their design process and manufacturing systems along with training and support (which they clearly have). it wont prove whether the thing works or not. It is probably made well enough as humans have been making sticks and cardboard for centuries!

Infact I would think it likely that they would pass ISO9001 accreditation easily as there is clearly a product development cycle as well, what with their intention to add "flashing lights".

I wouldnt be surprised if it had some kind of design award either!

Besides, i have never seen one not work (assuming that any poor sod blown up was not following their training properly) ;)

IFPI wants another stab at OiNK

SuperTim

His money!

The money he made was from people who paid him to be on the site (or get others on the site). As such that is a registration fee and not a fee for downloading anything. It has no bearing on the amount of money the record industry would have got as it isnt for anything they sold. Once the act of downloading takes place, they can sue him and the person for copyright infringement, but they didnt do that, the big eejits.

BT reveals faster broadband pricing

SuperTim

Ridonkulous....

I wouldnt touch it.

i pay a fiver for 16Mbit (actually about 10Mbit) with 1.3 Mbit upload (actually that) of UNLIMITED data. I also get FREE FIXED IP and N router. They dont traffic shape either (and i would have noticed!)

I could get a bit of a faster speed for a lot of more money and probably some appaling limitations, so no thanks.

Welcome the move. The Americans can all sit tight knowing that 9/11 cannot happen again, thanks to this system. Presumably it means we no longer need to be irradiated before we fly and we can now take big alarm clocks with lumps of plasticene and curly wires on board aircraft.

Or is it one further stage of making the world think america is up its own a-hole?

(note to any Feds reading this, the above is a joke, and not a specific threat. Plasticene is a fun and inert playstuff and will not render my underpants any more dangerous than they already are)

Survey outs Britain as nation of tech twits

Strictly speaking.

SuperTim

Ask a silly question

A VHD? Thats a Volumetric Haptic Display, I thought that would have been obvious, or did the researchers not realise that there is more than one answer to their questions?

I gather much of it was multi choice, given the unnerving silly answers. anyone filling out a technology survey with non tech answers is a joker

Another symptom of Asperger's is the inability of a subject to recognise certain obsessive traits, or indeed to temper their actions when they are obsessing about subjects. Asperger's doesnt come on late in life, He has always had it and that is probably what drove him to commit the alleged crime. He didnt realise that his actions were irresponsible and continued to do things after "normal" folk would have stopped.

I am very familiar with this as it appears a relative of mine has now started down this road. he has Asperger's and regularly does stuff like this (though not on an international or illegal scale) He hacks his dad's wifi router whenever he gets kicked off the internet for looking at dodgy sites and generally doesnt realise he is being a bit of an idiot. His siblings on the other hand are completely different.

Apple vanishes multi-touch ancestor

SuperTim

I like qwerty.

I like it, i can touch type and i dont want to be learning "gestures" just because some darwinian throwbacks get a bit of RSI because they are weak. Never had RSI in the MANY years i have been touch typing. I am old enough to remember how great the Microwriter was supposed to be. Some claimed 240 wpm, and sure it was fast, but i couldnt get the hang of it that easily and i never saw anyone go at 240.

Character and word recognition is now good, but i still think a good qwerty touch typist can get the stuff on-screen faster and with fewer mistakes. Still i live in the hope that we can all just think our words on to the screen (though i am sure i would get fired if i didnt check it for insults first).

Naked scans: Net cries nude-o-geddon

So nobody with a camera phone can take a picture of the screen then? is that "impossible" is it? Do they have a magic screen that cannot be photographed? I am sure they will want to stop their officers taking cameras into the booth but I bet that wont stop some of them trying.

Potayto Potarto

Definitely a rollover hoop, but possibly a cage (like the caterhams have), If it is DESIGNED as a racer, then this should be part of the design!

SuperTim

it wont look like that....

if it wants to race it will need a substantial roll cage. i notice that is suspiciously absent. Seems to be a bit pie in the sky at the moment.

Humble Desktop?

The spec was...

Core i7 CPU at 2.93 GHz

6 GB of RAM

7.5 TB of disk storage using five 1.5 TB hard disks (Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 model)

That's not a humble desktop PC is it now! Thats a pretty impressive desktop PC.

A humble one would be the crappy PIII with 256MB of ram and a 40GB hard drive (like the one i am typing this on).

tracking content.

It is indeed easy to track content (if it is hosted on a website that doesnt move). Tracking encrypted porn being P2P'd is harder, but even assuming that's possible, it is easy to say that it is ALWAYS illegal.

Now, blocking a song being sent over the internet requires the ISP to KNOW that the song should not be sent. That is altogether harder. It may be a track i have written, that i own on one computer but need to send to another, or that is not copyrighted at all. The ISPs cannot know all of that.

I know what bono is trying to say, but then the problems are not at all the same.

Please shut up about the Mull of Kintyre Chinook crash

SuperTim

That's my point.

Sure the pilot was late, but manual throttle may have given them a chance. This is exactly the problem. Funny that the system was fingered on that accident.

SuperTim

In all fairness

It would seem that the inquiries have not sufficiently proved that the pilots were the sole error, and that is why the relatives of the pilots want ALL factors taken into account. FADEC is not as reliable in an emergency as full manual control, mainly due to possible conflicts with the software programming and the encountered conditions. A classic example of this was the ill-fated Airbus flyby, where the pilots flew at low speed and high-alpha, but when they demanded more power, the FADEC style software took its sweet time, delaying the spool up just long enough to cause the plane to crash into a wood.

I am not saying the pilots were completety innocent, nor that the helicopter was perfectly safe, but it would seem there are scenarios when these things conspire against each other and a crash results.

Court: iPod hearing loss your fault, not Apple's

SuperTim

Other iPod dangers!

The ipod is a fairly dense and hard object and as such, throwing one with full force into someone's face will potentially cause injury and upset. Apple MUST now introduce an amply padded model that cannot possible hurt anyone (about the size of a large pillow).

The upside is that you can lie on it while in bed!

Publisher asks Google, AT&T to unmask network intruder

SuperTim

Zombie? Public Wifi?

So if they did use those things? The law will investigate and find out. I am sure you are all correct, but then these people make mistakes. Like the son of the senator who published Sarah Palin's stuff. I am sure he thought he was being clever, until he left a trail.

The subpoena will reveal more details, which are then followed up until they get to the zombie's house or the internet cafe, who will then have to hand over any cctv or receipts.

This is the way crimes are investigated. You dont give up just because it is likely to end in failure. You wouldnt feel the same way if your stuff was stolen.

Thumb Up

Just another avenue.

Ebooks exist in multiple formats these days. They are downloadable on any torrent site and there doesnt seem to be any limitation on anything any more (apart from PS3 games, which still remain quite well protected).

Seems that there are now only issues of whether it is justifiable to download something you already have a copy of (such as an ebook when you have the paperback).

I know that many people have downloaded music that they already have the CD of, rather than ripping. Is that wrong? I dont see it myself, but then i would never do that myself, nosireebob.

Anyway, back to reality. You buy a kindle book, crack it, port it to another device, and that stops google deleting it from your kindle (ala 1984).

Nice one.
