Sometimes we need to download to watch the film

Due to too many FACI warnings and other crap we cannot find the film.

I actually stopped buying one companies DVDs totally because when I bought the first thing I had to do was rip and reburn, easier to download.

Re: Jolly good work.

I used to download rips of HD-DVDs so I could watch the high definition version of a film. I copied it from the PC to the PS3 and watched it on there.

I wanted to watch the film in HD, I had an HD player but they did not make discs for it. So I worked around it.

Funny that my BluRay player could play rips of HD-DVDs so well.

Re: Asta La Vista

I last rebuilt our home PC just as 7 was launching, so I reused its existing XP licence after finding Vista quite horid.

Still runs fine, and as I said before if XP gets screwed Mint goes on.

Re: They weren't sent through the ringer for _including_ stuff

Oh and if the XP PC ever gets killed off Mint 17 will be going straight on, I would only miss the video editing software. As the source engine runs fine on Mint.

MJI Silver badge

Re: They weren't sent through the ringer for _including_ stuff

I chucked Firefox and Thunderbird on, set their profiles to use the FAT32 partition, got their accounts working.

Then booted into Linux, got the auto mount working for the FAT32 partition and pointed the new proifles at the same place.

They were impressed when they viewed their emails in Linux when just downloaded in Win 7.

The boys were not supposed to get PCs yet, but will built a few months early to be sure of getting a Win 7 disc as they hate 8 as well.

1 SSD, 1 HDD, 5 user partitions (SSD NTFS EXT4, HDD NTFS, FAT32, EXT4), I had to create the FAT32 partitions on our XP box.

Re: @AC - Obvious answer to obvious stupidity is obvious UEFI

Well two dual boot PCs at hone, both have UEFI, both boot into Mint about 4 or 5 seconds after selecting the OS, Windows 7 takes more like 10 including the login.

MJI Silver badge

Just built 2 PCs

Dual boot, very powerful, emails accesable from both OSes. SSD boot.

Firstly I was nice and installed a Microsoft OS, top version of 7. Then I installed Mint 17 Cinnamon. Put STEAM on both boots.

Why were there more included tools on the free OS?

Re: PS3 - won't come away disappointed either.

Actually the good graphics even on the PS3 version really enabled you to zone in, the facial animations, the body language. The giraffes, the vegetation, it drew you in so much you almost felt you were there.

And as you said one of the best stories ever in a video game.

Now time to wait for Uncharted 4.

MJI Silver badge

Re: £45?

I take it you haven't read about this.

A large amout of PS4 purchasers did not own a PS3, this is mainly aimed at them.

Left Behind was produced after release. So could not have been included.

ND used it to develop their PS4 tools. So what if it is a reskin, it is still one of the best games ever.

I was playing Left Behind last night, on hard, on the PS3.

Re: TV manufacturers are shackled by a social phenomenon

There is no such thing as a new good big cheap TV, You have to drop at least one.

Some people go new big cheap.

Careful buyers go new good cheap or good big cheap.

Enthusiasts go new good big.

I would not buy a TV which was not good in the picture department, hence my TV was not cheap, mine is not the biggest but big enough for that film effect, great for films and games, also decent stuff off TV.

Would I swap for a cheap 55" TV?

Never.

Re: Quantity not quality - Charlie Clark

Actually the same TV for most of the time it was already poorer before DSO. About a year before DSO I went HD, and my HDTV is good at upscaling.

32" Wega IDTV so well able to get the best from the transmission, and those early days had a much better picture, higher bit rates ect.

Upscaled SD looks fine on my HDTV, just not as good as HD especially when the BBC used about twice the bit rate they use now.

MJI Silver badge

Re: Quantity not quality

Or compare BBC on Freeview to the first days of OnDigital. I am sure BBC1 (in SD) looked better in 1999 than today. Back then BBC looked very DVD like compared to the over compressed mess we now have.

Or early BBC HD on Freesat to BBC1 HD and BBC2 HD now on Freesat.

All worse in the name of cramming more channels in.

Re: @ MJI 'Sony stuff is heavy' Lead Weights

I have been inside some of these things and there are no lead weights, aluminium chassis, heavy power supplies, decent heat sinks, all weigh.

MJI Silver badge

Re: @ Simon Harris - This new stuff looks boring

I know exactly what you mean.

I buy by quality & price.

I use my DVD player as a music source as it is the best I have. It plays CD, SACD, and DVD-A, so I am sorted. Pioneer as well!

I have an old 5.1 Sony receiver, is very good but getting input issues (not enough), finding something similar but newer is no picnic.

MJI Silver badge

Re: Why bother?

I have a little 4 port ethernet hub under the TV and all ports are now full, I think a 6 port next.

MJI Silver badge

I need HDMI switching, hence my looking at new receivers.

Got 4 already and liable to go to 5 quite soon.

Getting surround sound out to the receiver is currently a pain, using both optical and coax on DVD input, TV input goes through a horrible looking optical switch.

MJI Silver badge

Re: @ Simon Harris - This new stuff looks boring

Brands would be interesting Bose as an example, most people would rate as shite, some as wonderful. I am of the opinion of marketing over technology.

As to weight, I need to replace my receiver some time, saw one in a Sony centre - first test, lift it up was it heavy. (it was)

Only other AV stuff locally shops have gone bump, or stuff is cheap shit, or there was a Bose in above Sony centre.

Can't find any other branded AV kit locally any more, No Pioneer nor Denon.

Re: Perhaps people do not like porn

Well, let's think

Naked woman, no problem, can be a nice sight depending on who.

Naked man - yuk

Other mens todgers, no thanks.

Since porn seem to involve todgers I am not a fan of it, doesn't mean I hate sex. Erotica can be pretty good, watching other people bonking is well off putting and boring. I can think of much better things to see, like for example my wife.

Basically porn is a spectator thing, I prefer participation.

MJI Silver badge

Perhaps people do not like porn

Not for prudishness ect, I like pictures of naked ladies but find porn off putting.

I do not want to see othermen's willies or naked men.
