No thanks. I don't buy anything Microsoft. Still enjoying my Wii for now. Maybe I will get a new console in 2 years if they have anything nice. But sure as the sky is blue no Microsoft stuff....ever!

WTF?

Re: Smart Phones Myth

That part has always confused me. I would love to agree that MS has an advantage because they don't have to license their stuff, but, AFAIK, Microsoft MUST pay an amount equal to what they sell their licenses to OEM's. A company cannot sell at a loss or give away product from one division to another. Unless you are saying that Microsoft's hardware sales are somehow in the same Windows division I can't see that as true.

However, if it IS true this must be brought us to the Justice Department because that means Microsoft is back to doing their dirty tactics leveraging their OS monopoly into other business areas.

MS is not asking too much for a whole OS/eco-system

@BristolBachelor -

MS is asking too much. MS caters to the entire industry. Apple only caters to their own users which all MS only folks continue to deride as 4 % or less of the market. Surely, Bristol, you can't be suggesting that a company that influences 90% of the market be held to the same level as a company that influences 4% of the market?

It sure reads to me that you think Microsoft should be held accountable to the same levels of, what, a company that does 5% of what Microsoft does? In my opinion, a company that holds over 50% of the market share need to be very reactive and follow the wants/needs of the community.

Microsoft will never do that. They could own 100% of the market (as they did in the past) and STILL push their desire onto the market. Microsoft sucks and needs to close their doors and their warez can be release into the public domain where it will be fixed correctly.

why were MS in a position to say to manufacturers that they can't install Linux

It's quit simple, really. MS owns 100% of the desktop. All Windows. Along comes an inexpensive Netbook that does NOT include Windows. 6 months later....MS owns 90% of the desktop. Alarm bells ring. MS decided to threaten manufacturers to no longer install anything except Windows XP. Manufacturers relent since, while popular, said manufacturers still make over 60% of their profit from systems with Windows installed. Would you say it's a smart business decision to risk paying 25% more for the OS?

Seriously. Get out of lala land ACoward. I would like to know why Microsoft did not get into further trouble because of this. I mean, the consent decree between MS and USDOJ expires and they can go back to the threats? Crazy. Microsoft needs to go belly up and all their warez become public domain. EOS.

Re: Silly of MSFT to try and turn a profit on the WinPho OS.

Dave15 - they were the first to become a 1 trillion dollar company! Why is that? Because of their fanbois? WOW. Pretty damned rich fanbois I would say.

Face it. Apple did a better job than anyone else out there. Quit your whinning and just allow others to get some limelight instead of insisting that Microsoft is the only company allowed success and popularity.

Re: a whole hour?

doggies...i mean dogged....get over it. these boards, none of them, sway public opinion. ever. period. but they do sort of reflect public opinion. in that no matter how many people microsoft pays to support their warez they are running an order of magnitude behind those who choose rather than "slavishly" adhere to them.

fact is, microsoft can try every tactic, including mimicry, but will fail to gain support. microsoft is toast and does not have the talent needed to regain their momentum to maintain their monopoly. soon, within 5 year i think, that monopoly will break and microsoft will have morphed into the new Apple. again. just copying others stuff. sad really.

Re: a whole hour?

Not really in Unix. MS even had Xenix (a Unix copy) back in the day, but all they can do is try to copy without a Xerox, just a carbon copy. Less tech, more damage. That's MS

The 550bn is for the stock shares.

It does not include the 100 billion they have in the bank. They are actually worth 650bn so any take over would have to be priced at over 650bn.

Re: Re: Related to ongoing contracts that are late and run on AIX 5.3 perhaps

Well, I don't know about you, but I pride myself on having actual working knowledge of 80% of every OS on the planet. It does make it difficult but I think that IBM did a great thing with their OS being able to virtualize the older OS. I can't keep 10 servers around my home office!

I don't think anyone is complaining about IBM's approach. It is good, fair to those that just will not budge, and a good incentive to move to new hardware and OS.

This is how Microsoft should work. Sadly, MS will be dead in 12 years when the hanger-oners (lol) finally give up.

Re: "OS X may "look" more like iOS but it'll still be a "proper computer" for those that need it.."

Hardly....I read recently that even AutoCad is coming out with a Mac OSX version. Mac's are still strong and getting stronger in the tech world. iOS just dominates the computing realm (that includes smartphones and tablets). It makes sense to apply some of the iOS stuff into OSX but OSX will always be OSX. Adding things does not mean they are removing other features and functions.

Mac will live long and prosper...as will iOS!

I kinda hafta disagree. I ran to Apple to escape the Microsoft world back in 1998. As the years went by I was able to more and more tell family, friends and colleagues that my Microsoft skills were diminished and they should look elsewhere. Now I am getting more and more family, friends and colleagues asking Apple questions. Still, it was a great trade off. I only get 5% of the questions I used to get and the answers and a simple sentence or two.

Gotta love Apple tech for consumers! Which, frankly, is the majority of computer users these days.

Jim in Hayward

Re: Re: Back to basics?

@Phoenix50 - Actually, last time I went to buy an operating system for my computer none were available (pre-Linux days and Unix was too expensive). I had to buy a new PC to get the current Microsoft OS (granted, I had not purchased a PC in 4 years but the new OS would not work on my existing hardware). One of the reasons I went out and bought a Mac instead.

But Apple paid Proview for the iPad name in 10 countries including China. Proview is a Taiwain company and their China division is saying the payment Apple made is not valid for the trademark that exists in China.

Proview is going bankrupt very quickly (within 60 days at best) and is trying to eek a couple of million to give to the officers.

Apple is within their rights to defend against this attempt to ignore what they paid for.
