Is Apple readying a MacBook redesign?

Graham Lockley

I claim my prize...

'speaking as a bitter, rejected mac user who misses the days of the computer company rather than the bubblegum shit dispensing walkman company'

You are the ghost of MacBiter (god rest his soul) and I claim my ten pounds :)

Would love to hear what MacBiter would have to say about the current state of the company-formerly-known-as-Apple-Computers.

Apple is sorry (again) over MobileMe

Remarkably constrained reaction

... on the Reg, very unusual.

Had this been MS with Hotmail I'm sure the post count would have topped a thousand in the first minute, with a high percentage containing words like 'shite', 'Microshaft', 'beast' etc.

Of course by the time this post gets moderated, our very own WP will probably have given his own special view :)

Oh and lay off us Telephone Sanitation Engineers you lot, we provide a vital service. Surely better to fill it with the TV execs who bring us the endless reality tripe. Actually, we could turn it into a show, ' Im a Golgafrincham Celebrity, get me off this planet'

Think I will TM that one just in case :)

Hackintosh maker gets legal greeting from Apple

Graham Lockley

Heres hoping...

Apple get kicked in the nads on this one. Ok it aint gonna happen but are they then going to go after all the devs/admins etc. who are running OSX on VM's ? Or people like me who run OSX on a triple boot system ?

Lost any sympathy for the fruity loops many years ago when they sued DR over GEM and crippled the one serious contender to Windows.

On the other hand maybe they will lose and in turn all the other ridiculous EULAS will come under the microsope.

Odd

>mobile Windows nonsense running on these machines is the most unreliable p-o-c around

My experience is quite the opposite. Axim Pda, Ipaq Pda and two MDA's are my track record and I find it strange if I have to reboot any of them, usually its after trying out a new app or hack and I expect some stuff to be a lttle flaky but they are easy to remove.

Had a play with the Diamond today and finding it hard to resist but the Xperia X1 is due in Sept. and Im tempted to wait.

@Rolf Howarth

>In any case, isn't the situation exactly the same with other phones and you can basically only install whatever the mobile operator provides?

Based on my experience over the last 7-8 years of a variety of Symbian and Windows powered phones the answer would have to be no. Both OS's have a wealth of free and paid for apps that have bugger all to do with the operator and can freely downloaded from a variety of sources.

This is the reason I dont regard the iPhone as a smart phone, the ability to customise the phone with your own choice of software is sadly lacking, unless you count jailbreaking (with its attendant risks/pitfalls).

Mines the one without an iPhone in the pocket, damned rare if you listen to Apple :)

Commercial iPlayer faces anti-trust shakedown

Graham Lockley

Damn, my monitor needs cleaning !!

>Sky has it right, they know what is good tv

Sorry but I have just had to clean coffee from my screen after that comment !!

Sky produce next to no original programming, then they charge you a subscription (licence fee?), then they force endless ad-breaks on you.

Sky know NOTHING about good TV but LOTS about how to screw punters.

Sky is great if you want 90% of your primetime viewing to originate in Merica and dont mind endless ads.

Sad end

Belinea were good value, my first 17" monitor was a Belinea and the quality/price ratio was brilliant (its still lying around somewhere and works fine). Sad to see a company that combined value and quality go titsup.

SanDisk Sansa Fuze

Looks like..

..an updated version of my E265. Great player, I would second all the positives you noted. From the review it seems they have cured the only fly in the ointment of the earlier player, the start up time. On my older model, every time it is turned on it refreshes the audio database which means it can take 10 secs or more before the device is usable. If this has been sorted then I will certainly consider a purchase.

'Plus those coffee-house chicks are going to be more impressed with the Mac user & his copy of Ulysses'

Most Mac owners I know think Ulysses is an Italian car ;)

Your point is valid though, the PC Im typing this on was originally bought back back in 1980 (still got the receipt from Escom) and has suffered continual periodic upgrading ever since ! The fact that the only original part is the floppy (I dont use it but last time I checked it worked) is irrelevant, at no point have I ever bought a new PC !

<V for Vendetta>

Im in two minds over this. On the one hand I suspect it may simply be that a relatively inexperienced policewoman made an error of judgement while trying to keep a gobby 'yoof' under control. On the other, V isnt talking about the future......

Im inclined to the former at the moment but watching carefully for any more signs of the latter.

Re:be patient a month or so and get the 3G iPhone ...

'Apple just need to get the pricing right (i.e. lower) and have a wider choice of carriers (or unlock) ... and all that appears to be on the way.'

What they actually need is the vast array of software that is available for the Symbian and MS phones. Although I no longer use it as my main phone, I would be lost (literally) without my 4 year old MDA with TomTom and MemoryMap loaded. If you are happy with the 'out-of-the-box' iPhone then go for it, people who prefer to customise/extend their phones will look elsewhere. My contract is up in a few months and this is looking seriously tempting. Not keen on switching to O2 though...

Does not compute

>I threw all sorts of CPUs, motherboards and CPU fans away when I >was building my own computers. None at all since I got a Mac.

Lame argument Im afraid, the Mac you bought is responsible for a lot of PC parts being made redundant (the PC you replaced) and eventually will be made redundant itself and be replaced by another computer.

Or are Macs magical and never wear out or require upgrades?

Canadian toddler dies after VOIP 911 call

Graham Lockley

not quite a no brainer

>How could CBC have been billing these people unless it had their _current_ address?

Not trying to defend the VOIP provider but a possibilty is two databases.

Its not unusual for a billing address to be different from the address that the service is provided to. Its possible that the billing database may have been updated but not the service address. I do wonder what might have happened had a mobile phone been used though, maybe the poor lad would have survived.

Apple update trick triples Safari share

Graham Lockley

Aint happening here

After battling with Quicktimes habit of slapping stuff in my start up, when somebody gave me an Ipod I didnt let it near my system until I had figured out how to use it without Itunes. Sorted, got a copy of Sharepod and now I dont have to put up with the annoying 'updates' slipping on to my systems. Maybe I will download a copy of Safari to evaluate (always ready to look at alternatives) but it will arrive because I choose to try it , NOT because I am being nagged to get it.
