You've been baffled by its smart thermostat. Now strap in for Nest's IoT doorbell, alarm gear

And of course it is much more difficult to jam a wireless signal! So a burglar cannot enter unseen. Oh Walt a sec...

Another one bites the dust: AVG kills its remote access service

Ronald van Raaij

Used it but switched to teamviewer

I have used that service -before it was acquired by avg- but I switched to Teamviewer a long time ago, since that offers a faster experience, and a better interface. and works on Linux....

Tell us we're all doomed, MPs beg climate scientists

Re: A rule of thumb

This is about how many squabbling there is:

http://motherboard.vice.com/blog/now-just-001-percent-of-climate-scientists-reject-global-warming

<quote>Here's a chart about science. It sums up what is arguably still the most important finding of thousands of scientific papers published on climate change over the last two years: scientists overwhelmingly believe that global warming is manmade.</quote>

All these people who say there is "disagreement" are just there to muddle the issue because it does not further their agenda.

'Climate change is like Y2k!' - Oz senator

Re: Not all Aussies are clueless

Right, so a magazine for power companies (which essentially all are reliant on cheap coal) that explicitly states in its leader:

<q>important DisClaimer

No responsibility is accepted by APT Publications, the editor, the

authors or the printer of any articles for the accuracy of any

information contained in the magazine or the consequences

of any person relying upon such information. The contents

of this magazine should not be relied upon as a substitute for

professional advice</q>

Is more reliable than a council of scientists??? I am curious how you get this kind of information in such an obscure publication? Are you a paid AGW denier? I have an article for you to read (in the Guardian, a well known publication with a somewhat larger circulation):

The climate denial industry is out to dupe the public. And it's working

Think environmentalists are stooges? You're the unwitting recruit of a hugely powerful oil lobby – I've got the proof

Re: oh there are differences

"We cynics who distrust everybody without a testable hypothesis"

Riiight, I suppose you live on a mountain, but this guy doesn't:

"More recently, President Tong has spoken of climate-change induced sea level rise as "inevitable". "For our people to survive, then they will have to migrate. Either we can wait for the time when we have to move people en masse or we can prepare them—beginning from now ...""

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiribati

So If you want to test the hypothesis: talk with people like him how you can test it without him having to leave his birthplace.

Recommendations for private cloud software...

Tresorit

I see no one has mentione Tresorit ( https://tresorit.com/features ) yet. As a european (Hungarian) company probably a good candidate these days...

Similar features to all the others, but also data is encrypted before it leaves your computer.

Backup software for HDD and Cloud

Duplicati http://www.duplicati.com/

Duplicati is a free backup client that securely stores encrypted, incremental, compressed backups on cloud storage services and remote file servers. It works with Amazon S3, Windows Live SkyDrive, Google Drive (Google Docs), Rackspace Cloud Files or WebDAV, SSH, FTP (and many more).

Duplicati has built-in AES-256 encryption and backups can be signed using GNU Privacy Guard. A built-in scheduler makes sure that backups are always up-to-date. Last but not least, Duplicati provides various options and tweaks like filters, deletion rules, transfer and bandwidth options to run backups for specific purposes.

UK.gov tries to close site giving home addresses of badger cull figures

It is not about whether or not the activists have a point

Keep in mind that the way animal rights activists intimidate, bully and harass people has resulted in the widely acclaimed story of Laurie Pycroft: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2006/feb/25/news.animalrights

And the fact they are now able to hide behind a site hosted in another country (whatever the legal status and quibbles bout it) means in no way that these tactics are suddenly less reprehensible.

Dutch unleash intelligent robot bins: No ID, no rubbish

Ronald van Raaij

There are (as yet) no additional charges in Groningen

If you can read Dutch, you can read here: http://gemeente.groningen.nl/afvalstoffenheffing/afvalbeheerplan/Afvalbeheerplan%202011-2015.pdf that in Groningen at least there currently are no initiatives to charge extra for more rubbish. The current differentiation is just based on the number of occupants in a house.

(By the way the original press release (in Dutch) is here: http://www.versvrdepers.nl/2012/09/persbericht-afvalcontainers-met.html and as one can see the "charging for rubbish" part was mainly tagged on by Mr Ray as it is only cursory mentioned in the release and then as applying to France where for some forms of waste additional payment is necessary from 2015)

Birmingham drops the possessive apostrophe

Ronald van Raaij

So the council cannot do what google can?

FTA: However, there is a (sort of) plausible reason for the move. As the Times notes, Oz in 2001 expunged apostrophes from place names "for the sake of consistency in the databases used by the emergency services". Mullaney rested his case with: “It would be tragic if the ambulance couldn’t find your street if you forgot to use the possessive apostrophe.”

Type in King's Heath in google; Type in Kings' Heath in google: it finds Kings Heath in (of all places Birmingham)! The argument is therefore fallacious and even silly.
