They're back! 'Feds only' encryption backdoors prepped in US by Dems

KH

Re: Too late

Ignoring the firmware aspect, there's too many people who use computers in "grandma mode". Whatever Microsoft puts on there by default is good enough, and you can jolly well bet MS's security is going to leak like a sieve. Or flat out just copy everything over to secret servers before encryption gets involved. It's like VPNs. It only takes a little knowledge to do a lot of protecting, but many of the masses have never even heard of a VPN.

Not that grandma really has anything to hide, but that's beside the point. Much like a strip search -- it's the inspection itself that is the offensive part, not the risk (or non-risk) of going to the clink after the man with the rubber glove has probed her cervix.

Here come the lawyers! Intel slapped with three Meltdown bug lawsuits

KH

It could turn out alright for Intel. Maybe they'll sell a whole bunch of new chips because of it. Equifax certainly picked up a lot of new credit-watching-service clients when they released leaked millions of users' data. Financially speaking, it's probably the best thing they ever did for their bottom line. Some punishment. People are dumb, and keep going back to the idiots that burned them, despite their lousy performance records. (Think TSA, for example)

I've seen videos of LiPos burning, being dropped in water, and they KEEP BURNING! UNDER WATER!

@elip: "As someone who makes side cash doing exactly this, I can reassure you, this statement is incorrect. I also cut vinyl records for folks in the local music scene here in NC... if anything, tape, CD, and vinyl are growing in popularity (again)."

But isn't that because their popularity dropped to essentially zero for a while there? Yes there seems to be a small resurgence (I see vinyl at Barnes and Noble at the mall as I walk by their window), but what sort of percentage does it have compared to digital? The vinyl "comeback" really just feels like already-established artists pumping out alternative types of media alongside usual digital releases, in order to reach hipsters that use retro equipment in an attempt to be cool.

Not trying to be argumentative, just curious about the actual size of this resurgence.

156K spam text-sending firm to ICO: It wasn't us, Commissioner

KH

YES! Fine the companies that the spam is advertising for! They can claim they didn't order it, and I guess there's a REALLY SMALL chance a spammer could do an un-ordered blast just to get them fined because they hate them, but 99.99% of the time, if you get an unwanted spam (email or text), it's because the advertised company paid for the campaign. It smells like a duck, it walks like a duck, and the sh*tbag company paid for that duck to take its walk. Fine the perps! In fact, make a system where consumers can turn over spam messages and an automatically fine is generated against the advertised company! When these things cost more than they earn back, and the companies become afraid to send them out without 100% knowing the recipients want them, that's when spam will stop.

Never happen though.

AT&T, Verizon agree to hop into bed and thrust new erections over US

KH

"Everywhere AT&T doesn't have strong coverage yet"

Just small towns, like Houston. Everywhere I go, 1 to 2 bars. Page timeouts. I wish all the carriers would spend less $$ yelling at competitors in TV commercials about who has the best coverage, and actually spend some money actually giving us good coverage.

Firefox 57: Good news? It's nippy. Bad news? It'll also trash your add-ons

Forks are already out. Try Waterfox

"Will someone fork Firefox to support the old extensions? Probably"

There's already two forks of Firefox that allow the old extensions. One is based off Firefox v38, and is called Pale Moon (haven't tried), and the other is based from Firefox v53, called Waterfox. Using Waterfox right now, and it's great. All the "reporting home" stuff is stripped out (see their site for feature list: https://www.waterfoxproject.org/). Some sites that wouldn't work properly in Firefox actually work under Waterfox too! eg, Logging into Ebay frequently froze in Firefox, due to interactions with LastPass. Under Waterfox, all is great again!

If FB addition exploits a weakness in human psychology, then those of us that don't bother with it must be the only ones without psychological problems? Seems about right to me!

Re: Reloading

Not all solutions are fixing problems. Sometimes it's just marginal (or larger) improvements on the way things are done. Did you read that part about getting things within minutes of ordering them? Hmmm, let's say I'm a wedding photographer and my camera just died... tap tap tap... new one ordered.... be here in 4 minutes. I like the sound of that.

No removable battery = not in my pocket

Last HTC I had, I ended up having to abandon and upgrade past it, simply because the battery wouldn't hold much charge anymore. I didn't want to, but I had no choice. I vowed never again with HTC unless they change their designs to allow me to replace the battery myself (which is also handy for hard reboots when crashes go deep.) No user-replaceable battery means I won't be getting one.

How did they get past their defenses?

How did they get past their defenses? They were defending from Windows, that's how! It's unfortunate that so many businesses saddle their users (and those businesses' users) with inconvenience caused by trying to run a secure installation with an insecure operating system. I feel sorry for the end users having to change credit card numbers or bank accounts because of this, but it should serve as a lesson to other businesses -- if you want to be safe, get off Windows.
