Chrome hits iPhone and iPad, storms to top of download chart

Ilgaz

Re: How about some chrome loving

Install both opera mobile and new Firefox, both can sit in sd card. Firefox guys also promise an arm6 release once things settle.

They are both way better than google chrome. They can't even release it for Android 2.x. Funny thing, people don't think about possible Android 5 only updates. They happily ignored 80% of their own market you know.

Ilgaz

Using Android 4 now, chrome ignored

I will happily ignore chrome for a long time (forever) while I somehow paid for it.

Ignore the pre installed browsers as long as you can since they are coded without competition in mind, without ambitious developers. Why bother if they will have your application installed anyway? That is how opera, Firefox guys do crazy things to support both Android 2.x and 4.x because they want to be chosen by end user/ enterprise.

Ilgaz

While I hate Google

Must admit I wished they start a huge fight with Apple or go guerrilla leaking an internal build. Why? For progress and competition.

Even google can't mess with Apple it seems.

Microsoft: Don't overclock Windows 8 unless you like our new BSOD

Ilgaz

Re: Someone better tell Intel...

When I first switched from Amiga to PC, evil PC shop sold me a Pentium 75 overclocked to 120 mhz. It took a week to figure the amazing amount of restarted msdos sessions, games dropping to command etc.

These guys really know the PC jungle, tricks stupid shops do etc.

They don't talk about real overclockers. They warn against thieves. They know who will customer blame when they see bsod: them.

Ilgaz

I know their problem

On Mac, if you see the more stylish kernel crash, you immediately suspect memory. On Linux, you -again- suspect memory or your freak hacks while building kernel.

On win, you suspect nothing, you directly blame Microsoft since their image is horrible, majority of users are not advanced etc.

Ilgaz

They will hate you anyway so tell about cheapo RAM next

Honesty from Microsoft risking flames of overclockers.

Why not tell the side effects of using horrible, untested RAM just because it is cheapest?

ECC isn't that luxury anymore too and doesn't need "server/ workstation" class mainboards.

OK, enjoy your bsod andb saved (?) money, just don't call people stupid when they opt in for better reliability instead of 500 fps.

Reg hack attempts gutsiest expenses claim EVER

Ilgaz

Re: Expenses

It shouldn't be "IIIII", should be "XXI" for 5 (x is 2), they even broke world wide paper billing standard :)

Ilgaz

In some places, if you say you are from tax department for that purpose, you may end up with hospital bill :)

Red Hat: Keep clouds open, like Linux

Ilgaz

Re: @llgaz

Of course but when we look under (easy on any Android) we see Debian running. Actually a lot of people are doing very advanced trickery like changing scheduler etc. on Android.

Ilgaz

Add 300M to Linux, millions to bsd

Gnu guys have been shy about it for ideological reasons but every single Android means a Debian stable installation/ use.

Based on google numbers, there are 300M (million) Debianb Gnu/ Linux installations which are in active, end user and enterprise/ government "desktop" use.

Now do you understand the panic of ms?

Oh, while on it, every iphone& iPad in use means freebsd/bsdlite install.

Linux/bsd users should state these facts in every opportunity.

Google claims Chrome is the world's most popular browser

Ilgaz

Think twice

Google didn't ship a real browser, a lot of your private data has to go over their servers.

Warning for once and last time.

Ilgaz

Lets get chrome for Android first?

They should have faced the reality that 80% of their market runs Android 2.3- and ship some amazingly optimized chrome that will beat iphone web in every single device.

Of course, their primary interest isn't software so it didn't happen.

Ilgaz

Deja Vu

If I was google, I would try really hard not to remind their domination to public.

Just like Internet explorer, Mac safari google chrome isn't really purely choice of users.

It doesn't come with os of course, it comes on world'sn dominant page.

There is no "get Firefox", "get ie" (as it is compliant now) or "get opera" there.

What is next? Brag about toolbar?

Android Firefox: Screaming, awesome, you'll go blind etc

Ilgaz

Where is the patch? :)

Send/ file or participate (if existing) in a bug report voting/ testing of the issues you mention. No arm assembly knowledge needed.

Their gigantic size may fool you but Mozilla Firefox is a pure open source project. A lot of stuff you see in application are results from end user, noob, enterprise, mit professor alike feedback.

Ilgaz

Re: Hello? Anyone there?

Opera fans/ users have nothing against Mozilla/ Firefox.

I even wrote why Firefox in this shape is very big news for Android scene below using opera mobile and got voted down :)

Ilgaz

This is big deal, here is why

People using Android, a lot of them use it because there isn't any other choice. People don't trust to google too (yes, average) and thanks to the anarchy in market, several assholes exist on Android market. Nobody (except very technical) knows what the hell is going on with their private data.

Companies, including google are very unresponsive to feedback too.

Now there is this thing which is completely open source, has developers which you can even irc coming to market and this time it performs too. Also it runs on 95% of devices.

So, this is big news, really big for mobile.

Ps: not a fan really, just stating facts via opera mobile on Android.

Ilgaz

Yes, no chrome

It doesn't run on 80% of Android market: it doesn't exist.

Do you hear them now?

Re: Mad/ charismatic scientist needed

Apple is already Edison company based on their style.

We need mad scientist (Tesla)+ not so educated but filthy rich/ connected capitalist (Westinghouse) combination.

Ilgaz

Mad/ charismatic scientist needed

We just need another Tesla. Electrical engineers hate us telling this but just imagine Tesla had access to computers with today's knowledge.

It is 2012 and all we talk is whether a magnet need for a copper or its plug standard. Typing this on a dual core htc which I will have to plug soon. Nobody sees how pathetic it is? :)

Ilgaz

Usb spec

No, usb spec is strictly 500ma Max, if your PC (motherboard actually) goes beyond it to make "people using PC to charge phones" happy, don't take them very serious.

Ballmer welcomes Yammer to the Microsoft family

Ilgaz

Re: If you can't innovate, acquire

The problem here is, Skype really invented something. Purchasing them has put Microsoft and their stupid partner Nokia to "hit list" of trillion dollar phone industry but it is another matter. (read Ahonen blog)

Wtf is yammer?

Ilgaz

New idea for reinventing startups, go to Redmond

If you went to a venture capitalist saying you will setup a business oriented social network, he would open internet explorer and show you linkedin.com homepage and various Intranet stuff from IBM etc.

Of course, if you go to ballmer, he pays you billions from shareholder money.

Finnish PM rules out Nokia rescue package

Ilgaz

Use a freaking Android first

The os itself is designed to be customizable by vendors and user in insane levels. There are Nokia launchers made by hobbyists which are so perfect that you can't figure device running Android. Even a windows phone launcher exist.

Actually, lets say google lost all "look and feel" cases. There is nothing they can do as os design allows third party screen lockers, launchers and keyboards.

By the way guess where all symbian techie users and advanced developers are? Android.

Ilgaz

A job for government

In 21St century, one doesn't expect a government to save a company but look to other things like social peace, defense and regulation.

Another things governments do is espionage and counter espionage. Just get rid of "bond" image. These days, everything is finance. By the way, you don't prison or assassinate your evil guys. You just do planned, small leaks.

Nokia symbian share was high, it was at absurd, undeserved levels so it was leveling down. Meego? Did anyone except google fans and media who is fed by google see future in Android? People were asking what was wrong with Java micro. It was looking that pathetic and see what has it become.

Nokia could have kept qt plan, don't be such ignorant, nobody cares what kernel it run as long as there its an unified API covers everything. Apple can switch to windows nt tomorrow and nobody using iphone would notice. That is how large API works.

Publicly giving up symbian and meego. That made everyone suspicious as there was no need.

Microsoft's uncloaks Phone 8 developer preview

Ilgaz

Win phone 9?

Don't be surprised if it needs windows 9 and obviously, win 8 handsets won't be upgraded.

This isn't the Microsoft we all know and hate/ respect for backwards compatibility. This is a small gang who puts a gigantic company to the bet and leader is ballmer. Microsoft we know would shave off features and make sure last major version owners get the upgrade.

Stay away until ballmer gets the boot.

Ilgaz

They even abuse NFC as an excuse

First of all, nfc isn't some Sci-fi tech everyone is dying for. My $200 Huawei has it, my HTC high end doesn't.

Difference between them OS (and app) wise is zero. I just don't see apps strictly needing nfc on my HTC . That is all.

There isn't an os in IT history that needs multiple cpu/ core to function. Obviously, high end games or apps would be a disaster speed wise but just like Android, you can hide them from low end devices.

Achtung Penguin! SUSE tunes up Linux for SAP

Ilgaz

So SUSE is free of Novell?

I had great respect to the distribution until Novell and gang of Mono/Icaza got involved.

When did they free themselves? Really interesting that I missed that.

Ilgaz

Re: Well

They are kinda being sarcastic about the "free work" image of Linux developers using the famous advertising slogan which is never translated, used in original form by car company world wide.

Linus Torvalds drops F-bomb on NVIDIA

Ilgaz

Linux is more than "cheap, free os"

Anything comes with GPL carries a very serious ideological background with it. No, it is not "communism" or USSR, red scare.

Apache, bsd licenses also carry an ideology, they just have a different take but very similar.

If you want serious suits, aix/ win or z/os are your options.

Ilgaz

We will all laugh at nvidia soon

You know, opengl ES exists because of a need. It is there because the "real" opengl doesn't fit to small devices. Just like Java Me, one day, Android happened.

One day, soon, this limitation will cease to exist and that time, ATI and Intel, even VIA will enjoy their community developed, tested and mature, cpu agnostic drivers.

Ilgaz

There are real 14 year old guys in oss

I remember a p2p app's genius developer (in win scene) keep saying he is 14 years old. We thought he was joking or taking counter measures against lawsuits.

So, one day he called a guy "turd" :)

Ilgaz

Yes, bought nvidia for pure amd setup

I was seriously bugged by ATI/ amd not shipping official win7 driver for the graphics chip they put inside their own chipset (trivial for win) so I bought a low end gpu from nvidia since they keep supporting their own stuff.

I don't even like nvidia but their policy forced me. there is a similar/ supported gpu from ATI but what happens in 2 years?

Ilgaz

Who is he and that bearded red t-shirt wearer?

His software runs on billions of chips. Just because these guys aren't spoiled, disconnected types and you can even irc with them makes you forget what kind of revolution they accomplished.

Ilgaz

Yes, kid like os you have to use

You don't gave slightest clue about why open source enterprise has been success. It has "benevolent dictators" which doesn't give a F about corporate double speak, games behind others back or underserved politeness.

Lets say IBM plans to port openbsd to mainframes and they keep bugging Theo with stupid questions. The manners won't change because of @IBM.com mail, he will get exact same response as some @aol guy.

Open source is beyond those .tar.bz2 files, it is a way of acting/ behavior and direct relations.

Nokia's Great Software Cleansing scrubs off everything since the '90s

Ilgaz

Re: My next mobile phone

Buy a device from engineer run company like Huawei which runs near pure Android and focused on reception etc.

I am in an area where people turn off 3g as it doesn't work at all. $200 Huawei u8650 gets 3 bars hsdpa. No kidding.

Ilgaz

Re: I wish they'd spin Trolltech back out

If Nokia didn't bug the project, a huge amount of Android software was using qt right now.

Can you believe port of qt to the most important mobile operating system (as ios not possible) is done by a single person who doesn't even work for Nokia? It was, for a period. Don't know the current situation.

As trolltech was a very successful and seriously managed company, we forget their size. Nobody in today's environment would leave them to Nokia's hands and they are easy to buy.

I just wish some really big and mature company like IBM buys it so commercial software guys feel safe.

Ilgaz

Re: It's a shame for Qt

Qt became this far without Nokia at first place. All Nokia did was hurting its well deserved prestige by trying to fit it into incapable devices, trying to convince developers "it is Nokia future" and slowing down its progress into things really matter (tablets).

Nokia have really hurt the project enough but as it already have established base& trust in both commercial and free software, nothing serious happened. It could be worse.

Source code smoking gun links Stuxnet AND Flame

Ilgaz

Re: Headline: "Source code..." and Kaspersky Lab

I know you are joking but the task they try to accomplish is really insane.

They will disassemble that gigantic piece of evil genius team's code, hex by hex and will try to figure what the hell it really does/ did and capable of.

They have clearly noticed a pattern in a module, that is all. Nobody, except some guys in an secret underground silo/ data center has access to real source code. Or, based on their style, it could be in an internet Cafe middle of nowhere. The genius trick is, it didn't really try to hide at first place so heuristics failed miserably.

Ilgaz

Re: Heuristics

What if the virus politely knocked door to see if there are any clever guards in PC? I use commercial antivirus and there is no way you can add your stuff to startup out of nowhere (e.g. System idling).

I bet they also do some kind of early "check" to see if system is capable of heuristics.

Microsoft 'mulled Nokia buyout, ran away screaming'

Ilgaz

Don't you forget something?

Every kind of bad news for Nokia is also bad news for Microsoft as whole industry, nerds and even common people associate them with win phone now.

I bet the market already talks about sendo etc.

Ilgaz

We know them, that is why

I get to choose my own hardware and I don't want to use any Ms os because I don't like the way they are managed. Yes, simple as that. I believe, with their current way of doing things, even if they hire Knuth, Linus, all Android team and Apple developers, their product will still be lame, under performing.

If they live their own long deserved nightmare IBM lived in 90s and decide to act like a mature company, things will change.

Ilgaz

Re: best discussion on Nokia buy out

While I hate the company, Samsung's Bada os is a hidden giant sits there with amazing amount of users.

It is weird that even opera took their time to release mini for it.

Now, what if Samsung makes it licensable without Nokia's mistakes?

Ilgaz

Re: Core business

Bing maps? Never used since I own an Android which they don't release software for.

So, is Bing a service of Ms or some kind of punishing other os users thing?

You know what? I own a high end Android and I still miss google maps & youtube of my Nokia symbian e71. Knowing what kind of mess it should be to support symbian, they have my respect.

Ms can't even separate a "service" from "operating system". They think people will give up Android for that windows maps thing. Believe or not, that is how their mind work.

Japan still in love with the fax

Ilgaz

Re: Japan's high tech image is only skin deep

Knowing Japanese, I admire their "use technology when it really enhances a process" and "don't re-invent wheel" attitude.

Is there a more practical/ fast way to send less than 5 pages to another location? If there was and they ignored it, that would sound weird. The real issue is ever rising need for paper.

Ilgaz

Re: and bring back TELEX next

Noticed they are still in use in large marine industry. Those old fashion billionaires still insist on tested, reliable tech. Eww.

Ilgaz

Re: Fax prevents fraud!

Actually, they trust to Telecom's industry record keeping, not 300 (or 200) dpi tiff file which is sent.

Ilgaz

Old guys

Perhaps they don't see the point of modern way. The point is, sending couple of pages to another location right?

On fax: put them to feeder, enter number, press start button. You will also know they are there, physically or digitally.

On "internet": boot win, find the awkward scanning application generally outsourced to some Indian company or coded by Chinese, find "document" setting (they are always set to photo), downgrade resolution (or you will get 1200 fake dpi), select tiff or pdf as file type (not jpeg!), scan, find file. Should I continue to "mail" part and tell the funny part where recipient's mailbox is full because of funny cat photos so it bounces?

Really, which way is practical?
