Ultrabook sales 'falling short of targets'

Ilgaz

They don't tell the basics

As a person who has very basic needs I have to hunt the forums and ignore flamewars to see the answer of 2 questions. Do they play 720p h264 and do they run a recent game 30 fps without any tweaking. These should be happening while a real antivirus running.

Netbooks made there questions very valid even for newbies because of Intel crap graphics included. At least AMD guys should come back to earth from overclocking scene and explain why their dx10 acceleration is different etc.

Android 'stands on Microsoft's shoulders', says MS lawyer

Ilgaz

Google is huge

The reason why better filesystems hasn't went into Windows and Mac (via IFS, not a hack) is easy as nobody cared that much and the cost of getting the certificate it requires. Tests etc. Google is big and got money. After Nokia gave up symbian android will be the only smart phone os that relies on fat for that massive complex and personal data. Its fans can keep downvoting me, hope they never have to recover hundreds of photos because of a kernel crash etc.

Ilgaz

please tell

How come a google sized company with an army of lawyers make such a mistake of including a filesystem which ms itself depreciates?

Steve Jobs' last words: 'OH WOW. OH WOW. OH WOW.'

Ilgaz

don't waste it

It is exactly the last part of a very first personal account of Steve Jobs from a family member. In fact, perhaps the last one you will read after the family notices how it was abused. Instead of reading that PR maniac's authorised bio, read the eulogy instead and head to folklore.org

Nokia: The first year of the Elopcalypse

Ilgaz

shows something else is going on

Amazon actually owns the code and developers of mobireader which also has a perfect security record. So owning the code of similar app and not shipping kindle must have non technical reasons.

Stallman: Did I say Jobs was evil? I meant really evil

Ilgaz

yes

Unlike your $10K/hour guys, he just asks for a freaking tea. He must be locked up in a cage and shown to public for that? You really dare to mock a UNIX legend's language? Heard his language credentials?

Ilgaz

so what?

So what are you trying to achieve by pasting it? Should he be locked down? Is he a wizard to burn? Should we point fingers at him and laugh?

Ilgaz

For now

App store for desktop and signed binaries. Wake up.

Ilgaz

forget rms and gpl

Can anyone explain why the beloved Siri isn't available for iphone 4g?

Sony and Ericsson divorce

Ilgaz

same here

Amusing that I finally broke the badly designed charger port of my e71 and I wonder around with a 3600 slide now.

What bugs me is the fact that this dumb phone has some real clever preferences and the stuff really matters, opera mini and nimbuzz works perfectly.

Funny that I was monkeying with offline profile to re-register to cell tower forgetting the fact that it takes 3 secs to reboot a feature phone.

As an ex sony ericsson k700i owner I fail to understand their decision too. I still miss my phone which is at bottom of some river now :)

Ilgaz

S40 is OK

Even that microsoft trojan had to announce new feature phones coming so nokia's feature phones seems in good hands. Unless they mess up with linux fantasies of course.

Ilgaz

ericsson is ibm

Ericsson is more like IBM today excelling in services and huge network installations. Sony can always keep using their parts. This decision will wake them from the dead for sure since the culture clash will be over.

A rapid first hands-on: Nokia’s Windows phones

Ilgaz

it is crap

Until the market punishes microsoft to transform its sick like culture and nokia gets rid of the manager/suit leeches that put the company to this situation... Nothing good can come from them. In fact even if something comes good, it will spoil in future.

Ilgaz

stalk the manager suits and ask these

You should ask them about s40 qt and what were they thinking with meltemi linux announcement coming from nowhere.

What will they do with the elephant in the room as they partner with oracle's arch enemy and relying on java on "next billion" is another matter.

I assume it was hard for you to find a nokia contact there since you must be "enemy" based on your the register career. They like reporters working as their press.

It is amazing nobody asks about the natural upgrader customer base who runs abandoned symbian and who are really pissed off. Just recently endomondo guys officially declared end of updates. Sports tracking is one of couple things symbian phones do great because of battery life.

Leaked Nokia WinMobes ready for midrange scrum

Ilgaz

Orlowski being relatively nice

Care to talk to a symbian user (about 100m) about the junk shipped and the real problem of nokia is?

If Nokia and their fans have read that particular author's articles to this date we wouldn't be talking about this anyway. Ars being nice? They are based in USA which never ever seen a real symbian phone. That is the naive / good hearted explanation of course.

Ilgaz

Forget multicore

You can't even code a browser for it. You can't code an im client which can stay online background. These are java feature phone level things! I was actively multi tasking on nokia 7650 the first s60 phone. I even forgot the year.

Ilgaz

ok lets put 36 core POWER

More processors and memory won't matter since the incapable me too silverlight shell operating system can't use it. Yes no smp support.

Ilgaz

answer

They lack features and freedom. Current windows phone nokia has less features than dumb s40.

Posted via opera mini on a dumb nokia phone which has 6 alternatives for browser. Yes 6!

How Jobs bent reality with LSD, Apple hype

Ilgaz

I bet he won't get more biographies

What kind of a horrible tabloid like PR campaign for a book of a self made billionaire?

It could be understandable if the family needed money but as you know there isn't such an issue.

I am not buying any apple product since they became an intel vendor and phone company but give me a break. Steve Jobs doesn't deserve this crap. Using UNIX eh? Sure every app has been written by government worker like people only drinking tea? Check where and when the computer revolution started.

Ilgaz

Choices

Well depends on the person. You can end up being dead overdosed or live at park or you can use the experience to produce something like dark side of the moon. He used the experience to start apple computer.

Jobs: 'I'll spend my dying breath destroying Android'

Ilgaz

he could be

If you knew a bit of apple history, especially the case of them between microsoft and windows 1 at Japanese market, you wouldn't be that suprised.

Nokia still in the red in Q3 sales bloodbath

Ilgaz
Stop

The image of Nokia

I am down to S40 from S60 E71 thanks to the horribly designed charger connector -finally- completely failed. The design of Nokia (speaking as an owner) is really overrated. For example there is a dedicated button in the most handy place (between volume buttons) that does nothing but waits for voice recognition. To change its function you need to do a truly absurd thing as hacking the Symbian OS.

There is no selection/option to lower J2ME (Java) apps volume so unless you have a serious social disturbance fan you mute their volumes if you are lucky.

S40 (which is a dumb OS) is more easily used than Symbian S60. The people who did these horrible design choices and wasted a state of art kernel (careful:kernel not the user interface) and network stack are still there and all staring at their Visual Studio enterprise versions now.

If you buy a Nokia Windows phone do two things. First make sure there is trial and secondly don't buy any promises when you query a missing feature. There are people who waits for Nokia Suite for Mac over 3 years now. Yes three years and counting. Company culture has no issues blatantly lying to customers or promising things that will never happen.

Ilgaz
Mushroom

In process of destruction

Nokia's S40 segment is doing perfect and seems to rescue the company from chapter 11 but Elop genius started to undermine it too. They may have caused massive panic in S40 market by spitting out things like 'linux' and 'replace S40' with their horrible (and I think on purpose) PR strategy.

If you were a J2ME developer who is struggling with the horrible developer tools and heard 'Linux' especially in the scheme of things (like Oracle) wouldn't you stop and try to figure what is going on? Personally I would.

Ilgaz

first in history

I come from massively mismanaged amiga and it is first time I see an entire userbase no matter for what reasons hate a company which they bought a product from. The latest scandal was the ringtone contest and it happened days ago. Funny that IT Media got tired of the soap opera and they plain ignored it.

On amiga. We had evil enemies, conspiracists and dumb public to blame. We never attacked or hated company itself. Nokia will sure make into public relation books.

Ilgaz

last warning to small investors

As I keep hearing "windows phone couldn't come earlier" no matter what your analyst says. Symbian install base has either already fled to other operating systems or like me, bought a new battery and stuck.

Anyone claiming users of this massively customizable operating system will queue for windows phone is either clueless or malicious.

Microsoft betting on ultrabooks to boost Windows growth

Ilgaz
Windows

They have a window of opportunity with Windows 8

If they manage to use Windows 8 as an excuse and say a word against the anarchic scheme of Windows development (everyone adding stuff to startup) and the need for very very advanced antiviruses their ultrabook strategy can work.

Otherwise I have used a true i7 quad core monster laptop which still struggled for the reasons above. It had absurd memory and SSD. Thing still struggles under load at startup since MS can't do anything against these abusive OEM companies. They really have to act like Apple on startup and shutdown. Perhaps even more like certifying things adding to startup without any meaningful scheme of disabling the checks. Even Sun/Oracle adds their little and needless process to startup now. Adobe does too and their rival who really doesn't understand Windows development (Apple) politely adds its maintenance/update tasks to system scheduler.

Jobs was 'working on future product day before he died'

Ilgaz

could be true

As a coincidence I just watched History channel's Jefferson bio and there was something with his last days and his trying to keep living until 50th year anniversary of declaration of independence comes which he wrote.

WTF is... Bluetooth 4.0?

Ilgaz

blame the os

Don't blame the technology for your operating system issues. Trust me on that. It comes from the anarchic windows bluetooth past. As ms somehow let everyone go with their own, there are still 3 standard bluetooth cores to support on windows. If you don't believe me plug it to any mac no matter what version it runs and see how it runs without any driver or zip file.

Not sure about linux but it should be similar. Even as of 2011 advanced software must still support widcomm and microsoft stack same time.

Ballmer disses Android as cheap and complex

Ilgaz

I know why

Unless there is a huge bug in firmware or corrupt preference; your phone gets signal of an operator in another timezone and adjusts to it. That is why all phones (at least the ones I use) has preference to disable auto time update.

Ilgaz

It is their way

It is about the design. Microsoft tries to do everything while UNIX philosophy they stay away is do one thing but do it good.

Ilgaz

reality check

As you mention nokia. Check nokia 7650. That was my first smart phone and it did multi task flawlessly. Windows phone is a step back decade for nokia and will result in its liquidation.

It's official: Microsoft, Skype marriage consummated

Ilgaz

You think they will maintain Linux Skype?

If MS maintained Linux Skype, adding all new features, the (IT) World could take a deep breath and say "about time".

It won't happen, they haven't lived the paradigm shift IBM did in 90s, they are not a services giant. They hate people who doesn't "choose" their OS.

Skype has become de facto standard because of its truely massive multiplatform support thanks to use of qt frameworks. They ordered Nokia not to offer Qt for Windows Phone, a framework Nokia owns.

Fill in the dots.

Ilgaz

Distruptive for sure

Once they settle, there won't be a single Skype working fine on anything other than Windows (phone).

Can't imagine such a thing? Just wait. They already started displaying "sorry your phone isn't supported" at m.skype.com while it is perfectly supported, can install from Nokia (ovi) app store.

Don't bet on their seriousity, you will always lose. Shame that Google Talk seems to be only viable option now.

Drone nerve centre malware was Mafia Wars' infostealer

Ilgaz

SELinux

I bet NSA will contact them and talk about the SELinux they created themselves (still open source).

Absurd, running Windows and allowing Facebook! Yes, social network, with location etc.

C and Unix pioneer Dennis Ritchie reported dead

Ilgaz

Both are related

You know, it was Steve Jobs who brought down UNIX (yes, OS X is still UNIX and even certified) and Objective C (still c) to hands of general public.

Years ago, people imagined #login on a green monitor when you said UNIX, now some ordinary, a bit technically curious say "I heard this stability comes from the fact that it is UNIX with a nice interface."

Dutch ISP calls the cops after Spamhaus blacklists it

Ilgaz

Charity?

Spam is UNWANTED mail, the mail you haven't signed up for. Even if Mother Therasa rises up from grave and spams my mail address, she will be reported to spamcop.net .

Being a charity, assuming a religious holiday celebration, serving to "world peace" doesn't matter. I haven't signed up for that thing, you can't provide proof that I signed up (wrongfully called double opt-in) so you are spamming me.

Dennis Ritchie: The C man who booted Unix

Ilgaz

Some will say Plan 9 failed etc.

The issue with Plan 9 is, it is way ahead of even today's common/general technology. You don't have anything (yet) to use the amazing features and the design of it. It is more like trying to use UNIX on Altair home computer.

Once the technology allows the vision of these guys, we will hear something like "Apple considering to move from Mach/UNIX to Plan 9 at OS level" and nobody will be that surprised, some will even say "about time".

I speak about stuff like seamless roaming between devices (including car computer) etc. and seamless distributed computing.

For example, IBM happily uses Plan 9 on their Blue Gene monster.

Huawei homes in on Euro biz market

Ilgaz

They are still Chinese

Just hours ago, my Mac' s battery drained because of their 3G dongle's client spitting out thousands of needless 'notice" messages and syslogd trying to cope with them.

That adds to 'ouc' process of them which does nothing but waits for the dongle to be installed.

Shame that because of stupidified companies like Nokia etc, they are market leader.

Cisco has nothing to fear if these guys codes without knowing what a "notice" signal on a *NIX based system is.

RIM stands, staggers, falls again

Ilgaz

No, unplug the server and ups

In Blackberry tradition and because how the OS/Network works, removing battery and re-plugging is a common "solution". You can bet a lot of BB users did today since to do anything related to BIS (e.g. activate subscription), operator instructs you to do so.

Sad thing is, I sense another MS Winphone partner (!) soon.

Ilgaz

BES effected

Just heard a large bank (not naming) had a total nightmare in communications today.

As they must be running their own BES, can assume enterprise must be effected. Guys were really, really pissed.

Anyway, I couldn't check for updates on a consumer BB just yesterday, from a computer. Their app was really acting very strange.

This downtime, with their greedy network partners all over the continent making sure they will get the money from the 48+ hours of downtime will sure mark the day of BB's ultimate decline.

Stallman: Jobs exerted 'malign influence' on computing

Ilgaz

Thanks to people like that, oss exists.

Forger/Ignore who rms is and look to his CV with the perfect universities, excellent recommendations, published work used by other legendary developers (includlng the ms/apple elite) and highly prestigious labs.

Also try to imagine what kind of connections with such credentials would have. His linkedin page would be fun.

A person like that, instead of swimming in money, having multimillion dollar home, a car fleet and lost track of share options still wonders around and try to stop the ignorant being abused.

I have never shared his views and IMHO they are way beyond today's half human/half animalistic scheme of things but I just can't accept bunch of lifeless people who achieved nothing in life or would do very evil things for money act like he is some sort of freak.

Ilgaz

Keycards

The purpose of keycard and wirelessly trackable, more convinient RFID enabled nametags is -exactly- that. To track people, to group them, make statistics and in some cases, help a computer program decide who to fire.

In what kind of fantasy land you live? Really think "good bosses" thought it was inconvinient for workers to carry keys?

The life and times of Steven Paul Jobs

Dictators were elected too

In Roman republic, Senate said "We are in crisis and last thing we would want would be little political, burocratic games" so they elected a dictator. Obviously, thanks to human nature, dictators were hard to get rid of once elected except one heroic general.

Kinda funny that Apple was also in similar shape when they had to call SJobs back.

It is the 20th and 21th centuries where dictator got its bad meaning.

IE security hole sewn up for Patch Tuesday

Ilgaz

That is how you sell software

By patching IE 6 and advertising the latest IE (even via portal partners), they get the respect/trust of companies and they also say "we do our best to upgrade our users".

They really did and keep doing whatever possible to make people upgrade the IE version. Same time, you just can't remotely disable IE 6 and literally effect World economy/health/whatever in a browser argameddon.

Ilgaz

Sarcasm I guess

Enterprises, even advanced home users love this "this will be patched, this will be too, these are critical, these will effect these" pre-announcements. It would be great if Apple did them too. I heard it is also "copied" by several others including Adobe.

'Silent majority' is content with elderly Java, says startup

Ilgaz

I am sure

I am sure IBM will spend billions to support Java 7 after Ellison childishly talked about "erasing them" once they reach their integer performance. Like every enterprise looks to integer benchmarks and decide to buy IBM, not because of support system or amazing backwards compatibility, trust etc. :)

Joking of course, I know Big Blue doesn't work that way.

Are you saying IBM doesn't support anything beyond 1.4? Mysterious really. Not into enterprise java thing so I shut up before saying anything stupid.

Future Firefox to slurp updates silently

Ilgaz

No it is that powerful

Firefox extension mechanism is massively powerful and they try to find a way to make it lighter, safer without making developers mad.

It is comparable to OS X Input Manager mechanism where Apple had to take serious steps while retaining compatibility. Mozila isn't Apple though so it will take a while.

Ilgaz

But IE 9 can show IE 6 pages

IE guys code it in a way that whatever runs in IE 7 (for example) keeps running in IE 9. That even includes web pages, extensions and interaction with web pages.

Without a official MSI, official "administrator guide", active directory etc. flawless support, "enterprise" is no go.

First they have to respect the installation system of the OS they ship to. It is .pkg for OS X (not drag) and MSI for Windows. OS X happens to accept drag&drop (thanks to launch services etc) but really, accepted method for OS X is .pkg

Ilgaz

What a genius idea

So, some innocent text extension can go insane and let you send $100000 instead of $100 at your BANK WEBSITE.

Do you really use Firefox? They check compatibility for a reason: It is very, very, very powerful extension scheme. Even the browser UI itself can be classified as extension in major scheme of things.

Chaos feared after Unix time-zone database is nuked

Ilgaz

Any debugger out there?

Wonder if "astrology" guys copied/pasted some GPL code in their "application".

If FSF really acted like an evil company, they would sure look for it and it would be a painful lesson for anyone coming up with a similar idea.

Obviously, they know open source guys doesn't care enough, biting them back won't happen, so they sue.

This is exactly why Apple should stay on *BSD and Apache as long as possible. Sue Apache? You sue Apple Inc, deal with it.

Hope IBM releases their army of lawyers against them and one day these idiots with genius lawyer ask "wtf were we thinking?".
