'Intelligent systems' poised to outsell PCs, smartphones

Re: going backwards?

Mips, not mentioned isn't idling too. IMHO, with iphone and android, developer and hardware companies finally got rid of their weird x86 addiction even including Microsoft with their windows 8.

There is no turning back, monopoly is over and it will be good even for Intel. They need competition to progress too.

Facebook: Your boss asks for your password, we'll sue him! Maybe

Ilgaz

Check the back of your cc/atm

Banks fixed it years ago. They own your credit card as an object granted to be used by you so you can't hand it over to another person. If it is stolen, it gives them grounds to be involved in case etc.

Even basic promotion (profiling) cards have it. It depends on which country you are in though.

Ilgaz

Basic answer

You can say "the information you want from me isn't just risking privacy of me but risking other people such as my friends and family"

I said it to idiotic Mac service asking for my administrator password on phone.

Ilgaz

Re: They can have it...

So by idling and yet having account on facebook with friends saves you from that gigantic scheme? It doesn't.

Especially in IT , giving a password to any third party, even if it is yours is a horrifying sign showing lack of responsibility and basic security practices.

perhaps companies are baiting..

HP finally decides the future of the PC: It's a printer accessory

Ilgaz

Re: People still buy HP printers?

Their inkjet trickery and lame, annoying driver software killed the respect I had for the brand.

Anyone knows how much money do they make from consumer inkjet to justify this massive brand slaughter?

Ilgaz

Re: Ouch

Not verified the model but it comes from a credible person. One combination scanner/ printer of HP declined to scan a document since it didn't have ink.

Microsoft fires Bing execs after biz probe

Ilgaz

Real issue is

People expect such behavior from Microsoft just like they expected their founder to be short sighted enough to say "640 kb should be enough" which is nothing but IBM's fault.

The real issue is the company image which is a disaster of brand management. obviously they need real changes in company core to fix it just like IBM did in 1990s, down to giving up their money making PC business to Chinese.

People with funny titles like brand entertainment won't say these facts to them.

Fragmentation bomb wounds Android in developer war

Ilgaz

Too much whining

I moved to android from Symbian and I still despise google and their lame trickery, their information vampire attitude and their treatment to users and developers alike. One should ask to that Trojan Elop and idiots at Nokia board why we moved to android while hating it.

I use 2.3.5 and will never likely get the 4.x officially since google forgot to tell handset manufacturers they will go 512m minimum with ics , so I have 256m RAM on a device manufactured on summer 2011.

By constantly whining about fragmentation which seems doesn't exist for developers who know what they are doing, people miss the real issue with google android market.

Just yesterday, I was shocked to hear that they don't allow Indian developers and Indian users to sell& buy software. That is amazing, ask anyone in Telecom/ software business. They also don't let EU member countries (some of them) and Russia to buy& sell too.

They change the name of damn thing without prior announcement, people end up in phone stores and services asking where did market go! They are stupid enough not to think about a temp. Icon which is named "market" which will launch play store and tell people about change.

They even make gigantic publishers nuts with allowing patented, trademarked "need for speed" which has ad supported low res wallpaper and nothing else hit number 6 at top 10. Good luck with electronic arts meeting.

I am not even talking about allowing developers steal core Apple OS X icons while there is multi billion dollar patent war going on.

Fragmentation? Sent via Opera 12 mobile, a full feature mobile browser runs on all Androids.

Firefox gobbles H.264 to serve up vids to mobes, slabs

Ilgaz

You forget

Divx had a perfectly working application/ codec installer downloaded from a very clear Divx.com address. They also had quicktime and avi export codec which is a must in any professional, semi professional environment.

Is there an officially supported quicktime export/ import codec (that means avid/fc) for webm? Anything avi based for premiere? Did they bother to talk to codec implementation power houses like 3ivx or core codec guys?

Ilgaz

Let me tell another reason

Back in day, Mozilla had a working Symbian port. I really don't know who to blame but it disappeared. This is way before Apple iphone or android.

If they actively maintained that port, they could have a great start on way more powerful devices. Just look to Opera mobile. These guys started back in Nokia 7650 days and maintained their Symbian port no matter what Nokia idiots did. In fact, their fuzzy logic link selection via touch with automatic zoom first appeared on Symbian uiq Sony p1I after it died, seriously.

Ilgaz

Re: I don't use Android Firefox on my phone...

I can't use too since supposed to be open web enabler doesn't run on my device because it has only 256mb RAM and those Apple rejects doesn't support it.

Posted on opera 12/ android which supports video, flash and webgl on this poor device.

Re: What would Apple do?

Apple didn't change the finder interface / ux except adding next's dock since 1984.

All that other, added stuff are extras which they never, ever force you to use. Remember the desktop widget craze? They loved widgets but never, ever made awful mistake of putting them to desktop, visible by default.

Microsoft still has lot to learn from them. Apple invents crazy things but they are damn conservative when it comes to basic desktop paradigm.

Fujitsu's King K thrashes Top 500 rivals

Re: What OS is it running?

Wiki says Linux based enhanced operating system.

Rare people who still thinks only poor who can't afford windows runs Linux should think about it. seriously, it is 2012, not 1996 and they genuinely think that way.

IBM boasts of Power-AIX win at E-Trade Korea

Ilgaz

Not in enterprise but...

I really wonder if Oracle's needless removal of Sun brand and making BOFH crew mad by picking on Java users etc. has something to do with IBM massive switches..

I can't think of Oracle as enterprise hardware brand. I can't even say Oracle Java, I keep looking for Sun microsystems and remember it is Oracle Java now.

Why Windows 8 server is a game-changer

Ilgaz

Because they have credible rivals

For desktop clients on enterprise, apple doesn't really count and they made clear that they will never step on their foot except some markets.

Linux desktop? Sadly, still 1% and saying as a person who never liked Linux, they don't deserve that tiny percentage. Especially after seeing what the legendary conservative Debian stable has become in terms of usability.

Game changes on server business, there is IBM,Red hat, Suse, *bsd and oracle. These rivals are the reason which they have to produce good software or redhat comes and wins the contract. Linux on server is something IBM has to support on a $30m mainframe. It is that serious.

Anyway, just think what would happen if they had a credible rival on business client space. If I was a Microsoft fan, I would hate the low percentage of Linux desktop, not laugh at it.

Euro Android devs: Google's hanging on to our pay

Re: Correction needed

Being the market share king doesn't mean professional developers are all happy with your actions or you are doing well.

Take me as example, got $200 worth of software in my dead Nokia e71 in closet and yet, couldn't buy a single cent worth of software from android market. They (don't want to break Godwin) don't allow me to purchase software. I can't even SEE paid software without hacking my sim card.

If I still had Nokia or bought Apple, I could buy software. We are a huge market.

Sad thing is, unlike me, when people can't buy software ordinarily, they switch to crackers. They also get used to it. Just like music, when they taste piracy, hard to earn them back.

Ilgaz

Never invite customers to click links from third parties

What a great way to invite phishing and their cracker buddies.

Security community tries to educate 300 year old banks about their customer mailings, perhaps they should start with trendy google.

Ilgaz

Some deserved it big time

Say anything about google but lets agree they never said a word to other app markets. Only Symbian, blackberry and android has this third party app store function.

There are questionable choices from questionable countries but app stores from countries like Germany (android pit) and Norway (opera) exists. They are governed by really strict accounting and privacy laws and their judicial system is known for centuries for their neutrality.

As ex Symbian user, I never thought Google wouldn't sell stuff to my country. Being google advertiser added to my ignorance. When I figured it, I went to opera store and German owned android pit store. I can't buy 90% of apps even from euro developers since they don't sell there too. Licensing is always used as excuse but I notice stuff I manage to buy, even manually via paypal has google licensing.

They are the ones who puts all their eggs to one basket while there is no reason.

Samsung Galaxy S II punters get a lick of Ice Cream Sarnie

Ilgaz

Spoiled developers

I am not a facebook user but I saw that disaster app working on a fairly new dual core phone.

Said this to phone owner: "they would never get certified on Symbian with an application performing this way and uses that amount of memory."

Wonder why new, trendy, Starbucks/ Mac type developers hated Symbian? It forced them to write good code. Device makers hated too since nobody felt need to upgrade device every 6 months since the core OS was designed to force developers write real, professional mobile code.

Posted on an android device, thanks to Nokia.

Ilgaz

Rare but... Some have brains

People who got used to their handset tend to do more online which means increased data money, better performing device also helps them even in tower level.

Also people who gets upgrade will have extremely increased brand loyalty for the network and likely trust the brand when they feel like (not forced) upgrading.

Obviously, as long as carriers act like some little, evil phone shop with questionable little minded trickery, they won't see these benefits.

These guys actually see why people root their devices (mostly to get rid of their junk) via carrier IQ or old fashion service reports and yet they still put layar to ROM as system application.

I know animation/ graphic artists who paid $200K for symbolics/sgi/barco presentation and paid for them in months time. $10k is almost bargain in TV industry, there aren't many things you can buy for that price.

Also,it is people like me trusted to Apple for professional work and stuck, he will just change mb and cpu, perhaps memory to upgrade the machine.

Re: the most powerful and flexible development platform

I see you are being sarcastic but if you notice, openjdk and Apache's implementation (which is android now) started with similar reasons (open, documented, corporate neutral) are saving Java's future both on userland and enterprise.

Ilgaz

Basic question

If I were them, I would ask myself a very simple question: "How could android succeed?"

Answer to that question minus corporate rdf could fix things. For example, never ever think developers and users like Google or trust them. They don't. I mean don't trick yourselves.

Dear thumbs down owner

Do you work for google? Advertising company? Some Gray hat developer who makes extra with known semi spy notification advertising framework? Against privacy based on political beliefs?

Or you clicked thumbs down like a mindless zombie?

Ilgaz

Re: On Android - Check your market settings

A power like Google who codes the freaking OS and pays for terabytes of traffic and teraflops of processing power could tell advertising networks "please respect our opt out too"

Of course, they didn't. They have no respect to your privacy, it is in their culture.

Ilgaz

Amazing amount of permissions

You can actually build a zombie android network just with "full internet access" which all ad enabled require. There are white hat tools on market which can switch your entire connectivity off, erase all wifi access points to try fixing your connectivity. They require one permission: "full internet access". That is "super user" power on Linux/ Mac.

Ilgaz

You can't buy apps too

As I have no trust to advertising companies on mobile platform, I rather go with "pro, plus" whatever versions of apps I use on android.

Guess what? Same as many huge markets, my country can't buy apps from google store. The apps I could buy requires a lot of paypal manual process and as developers aren't accountants, a lot of them doesn't even put the option. Of course, serial means crack too. Can't blame them.

I believe, information vampires at google decided your personal information and habits are worth way more than $.70 poor developer would get and they don't sell on purpose. To spy on you.

Nokia and Apple sells software here for years now.

Android a photo-slurper too: report

Ilgaz

Issue is deeper and WONTFIX

Issue is choice of the file system, Microsoft fat which Ms themselves bypassed on first opportunity (win phone)

It has no clue about owners, it is designed for dos.

Sorry for stating these basic facts to you, it is in fact for couple of idiots who claims people who will plug the card to computer and manually manage files can't install a ext reader to windows.

Billions of dollars at risk, people lose personal, impossible to reproduce photos are disappearing because it has no journal and now, all personal data at risk. Every time someone mentions these basic facts, someone pops up and talk about that imaginary guy who plugs the sd to computer and hasn't installed some suite.

I can't even believe the fact that even if you manually go with ext3/2 and kernel has support, your device won't mount it. Yes, tried and I am not hacking the /etc just because some Microsoft Trojan made its way to stupid google, unnoticed.

Enjoy basic boot progress?

I remember years ago Linus flamed needlessly confusing Linux boot messages and got flamed back by community saying it is not Windows.

He didn't say he or advanced users will get confused or being disturbed, he talked about people who just installed Linux and welcomed by thousands of advanced status messages like a bank mainframe (actual banker told me) which will drive them to panic and confusion.

I personally enable verbose boot even on Windows and wish android had similar facility but I agreed to him that time.

Just one question. Remember 'chmod 666 /dev/dsp'? What did it serve other than driving thousands of Linux newbies insane and give up? For newbies, it was the command needed to make sound work. Seriously, funny now yes? It forced thousands of newbies to root console further messing up things. Now all Linux makes sound without needing that absurd operation, what harm did it do?

Death to Office or to Windows - choose wisely, Microsoft

Ilgaz

Not with current management

Microsoft has technology to render things on server gpu and send to clients.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff817578(v=ws.10).aspx

issue here is the spoiled kid like management who wants people to use their stuff only. Just having to translate to opengl would make them nuts let alone shipping to other (enemy!) platforms.

A lot of good, cool stuff gets invented and gets messed up with archaic platform monopolist ideas of 90s. They could not take IBM as example and become something bigger.

Look to stuff we're reading about, the possibility of releasing a product, service to a new coming platform. For any other software company, even questioning it would be insane. Did IBM give up releasing Windows software because OS/2 existed?

Same company, before becoming a Ballmer toy released products on Apple before PC versions. Mac internet explorer had better features than windows version etc.

You have to learn these

This site covers everything about batteries down to non existence of a true lithium polymer battery.

http://batteryuniversity.com/

It actually saves money too, for example when a phone dealer genius tells you to "empty the battery and charge" or when you see android apps claiming to help you "calibrate" battery, you know the harm it will cause to lithium since they are all based on cadmium tech which is absolutely opposite of lithium.

Ilgaz

They did on purpose?

Did you see any cell phone brick because of battery? I haven't. Or UPS devices from cheapest to most expensive which uses nickel cadmium? Why? They are wise to put a circuit/ or kernel routine to cut the power once the battery goes below 10%.

So, no lithium battery goes really empty and dies except an expensive electric car. Does it make sense to you?

Re: If the americans fall for this....

They can gather google, current owner of Motorola and ask a very simple question: "do you produce $200 handsets running android like Huawei and zte?"

Answer to that question would explain the real issue. It is the price. Everyone tries to act like Apple now partly thanks to wall street idiots.

Ilgaz

Re: Huawei is the new radio frequency (RF) hardware king.

I am using their cheap Huawei sonic ($200 unlocked) android right now which the kernel and radio software is immature compared to symbian and s40.

In this particular place, everyone turns off 3g to get phone calls and data since it is impossible for them to stay on umts. I know the towers are Ericsson, their rival so no trickery goes on.

$200 low end (even for their league) device gets 3g signal in this rf engineer hell and stays online.

Checking the hardware, (their full source is open), they use broadcom and qualcomm chips. So, if they really spy as their unethical rivals and their puppets claim, they must be partners with broadcom and qualcomm, red army must be making these companies, American companies add extra stuff in chips right?

Do they know how Telecom companies work? Or they think little fanatic red army people putting their own chips together?

Doesn't NSA etc. Lecture these guys?

Re: Terminal.app is still available ;-)

gcc doesn't exist on that UNIX terminal you talk about.

Also, with every major update to osx, forking methods popular in open source software which are running even on selinux of nsa are considered unsafe resulting horrible crashes if you dare to try gnome for example.

Re: Gatekeeper only works when "quarantine bit" set

Ah, the torrent line. You think all these people objecting to this are some kind of a pirate in panic.. Or the site you link to think that way.

Ilgaz

Go back? Not a good idea

Soon or later, Apple will stop updating the older os with new major versions of apps like safari. System updates (that includes drivers) will follow and one day, security updates will stop. 3rd party developers? They will get couple of mandatory xcode updates and somehow, supporting the older os will become extremely hard.

I am glad that I could stop myself from buying another apple product since they switched to Intel or I could be doing a very weird thing as using windows 7+ open bsd on apple branded hardware. Until, that requires jail breaking of course.
