I suspect he was thinking that a hair shirt is the hairiness that grows on many male torsos, rather than those austere and scratchy shirts worn to make you feel closer to God.

I suppose a Google house would have glass walls so they can see what you're up to and have random guys walk past your house with billboards and loud hailers; "I SEE YOU'RE TRYING TO SLEEP. HAVE YOU SEEN THESE ZzzQUIL LIQUID GEL CAPSULES? SPECIAL PRICE TODAY ONLY $54.99 FOR A BOX OF 10! HURRY HURRY! YOUR NEIGHBOURS CAN'T SLEEP EITHER SO THEY MIGHT NOT LAST."
Oracle boss's Brexit Britain trip shutdown due to US government shutdown
Re: Shutdown as negotation
RE: "Cheerleaders"
Only two women in that list of cheerleading politicians. I'd love to see Mitt (Sexy Legs) Romney and Rick (I'm not drunk) Perry in a skimpy skirt and low cut top. I didn't know they had male cheerleaders, never having seen any. But then, I'm British and not yet fully immersed in the cultural highs of the USA. Ya' live and learn.
FTA: "So far, the effects of the President Trump's executive have been limited to minor issues, ..."
Minor issues such as thousands of people, many on not particularly great salaries to start with, not being paid. If only they could furlough needing to live in a house and keeping warm, eating, medical treatment, etc.
Not to worry. They advise if you need legal assistance then just consult your personal attorney. Yeah. I keep my personal attorney in the closet. Don't we all?
IMHO the ability to have government shutdowns is a completely mad way to run a country. What were they thinking when they came up with that mechanism?
Happy new year, readers. Yes, we have threaded comments, an image-lite mode, and more...
Re: How long...
Have to say, I'm a bit disappointed with ElReg commenters. I'd expected the indent to be much greater by now. I suspect the average age of commenters is greater than that at which silliness becomes less likely and we start to say "Ah, who cares. We'll be dead soon. Better act my age." You all need to keep on acting as you did when you were twenty years old. I am still twenty years old, and intend to be forever. I'm probably younger than you suspect, but older than my mind thinks I am. Or something...I'm confused...

No.

Germany has a problem with the entire point of Amazon's daft Dash buttons – and bans them
Re: A simple idea
RE: "Wait. People are buying these?"
You buy the button, and the cost is refunded on your first purchase. It's right there in the article.
You stick the button on your fridge, or stash box, and find the milk is out, or your hash cookies*** are all eaten, then you click the handy button and just sit back in your comfy chair and wait a couple of days for delivery. No need to click to Amazon.com. Awesome!
*** Hash cookies - the all in one solution for the gigglies/munchies!
Re: That does seem kind of shady...
The buttons are usually for staple items that you buy all the time, not for special one off purchases - the boring household stuff. Not that I would ever use the buttons. I think its a silly idea. The only time I can think of where it would be useful is when I'm snowed in again and cannot get to the shops. But if I can't get out then they likely can't get in. I'll Pass.

Re: OK, I'd like to add another one
I think electronic thingies can safely be considered actual musical instruments these days, and for many previous days (stylophone excluded). I have to say, though, that I can listen only momentarily to most music emitted by such things. That might be more due to the knob twiddler than the knobs. The only thing that kept me within that particular video was the visuals, not the bleeping and burbling.

Re: Where we are vs. Sci Fi predictions
Lets not forget that there is a rather interesting theory, with some evidence, that people who wanted LBJ in power were behind the killing of Kennedy. We can be kind and not suggest that LBJ himself had a hand in matters. I know this is generally considered to be tin foil hat territory but if you actually read some of the data there is on the Kennedy assassination, some of the conspiracy theories actually make more sense than the accepted establishment version of events.
I know, it's bonkers to even contemplate such heresies that Oswald wasn't just a lone gunman. Down vote away...
Re: Where we are vs. Sci Fi predictions
The only time there were no rules in the USA about where you could build your house or castle was back when the first invaders came over from Europe and started killing the locals. Once those invaders had their houses and empires settled they created rules (and armies and policemen (police women only came later at the behest of those damn socialists)) to stop other invaders coming over and stealing their property and eating their lunch. Socialist is only a label to slap onto those with whom Republicans and Libertarians disagree and about which you know absolutely nothing. Silly boy.
Other than in the middle of very big cities, I find US drivers to be vastly superior, in manners and patience, to those in the UK. And in the middle of very big cities drivers in the UK and the US are virtually identical. I cannot see 4 way stops working, even marginally, in the UK since they rely on manners and politesse. UK drivers are bastards. Perhaps it's because there are so many of them in such a small space getting in each others way. Whatever, they are...

A few reasons why cops didn't immediately shoot down London Gatwick airport drone menace
Re: No gumption
Gatwick isn't exactly in the middle of nowhere. There are people walking around out there. The bill for landing on one of those heads might be a bit higher, especially for the owner of the head. It's easy for armchair warriors to come up with these solutions. They don't actually have to implement or face consequences.
Small American town rejects Comcast – while ISP reps take issue with your El Reg vultures
Re: Democracy at its best!
RE: "...this is called socialism..."
No, "This is COMMUNISM!!!" Or so quite a few commenters have said in other fora, then stood back aghast that we are not all horrified at the prospect and running as fast as possible into Comcast's loving capitalist arms. People can be very silly.
Poor people should get slower internet speeds, American ISPs tell FCC
Re: Well, if they don't think it's fair...
Libertarianism is the extremist faction of the republican party, and conservatism in general; The Taliban of the conservatives, if you will. They exist on the left side of the fine line between traditional politics and the militia mentality wherein there be dragons and conspiracies. The anger bleeds across that line by osmosis and fuels them to do such things as vote for Trump and hope for the best; if Trump doesn't turn out well, then never mind, it made a lot of snowflakes angry. It's voting turned into trolling.
That's a sarcastic troll icon BTW.
Well, yes, except milking as much as possible from underdeveloped infrastructure has been their mission statement since forever, and will likely continue to be their mission statement when they buy up the LEO companies in the near future. Don't forget, we've already seen the future, and it's already passed.
Re: Well, if they don't think it's fair...
Not really sure what you're talking about other than the usual libertarian rant, but in case you're talking about municipal broadband, it isn't free, or even subsidized; it generally pays for itself. You still get to pay monthly for it so that should calm your angry libertarian soul. Unfortunately for Comcast et al, municipal broadband tends to be faster, cheaper (because it isn't paying for the ridiculously extravagant corporate lifestyle of a huge company and it's upper echelons), more reliable, and, should there be problems, offers better support. Compete with that, big boys!
Oh, and this hippy has a job; provided by myself. How very libertarian of me.
Re: Well, if they don't think it's fair...
RE: "municipal broadband "
Everybody up sticks and move to Charlemont, Mass. The people there just voted to reject Comcast's offer to build broadband infrastructure (for a price), and to go for Municipal broadband instead.
And it won't be the only Municipal broadband in the country, despite the FCC's opposition and the ISP's lobbying.
Charlemont residents have, apparently, worked for years to get to this result. It can be hard work but it's not impossible, despite idiot libertarians squealing about "It's Communism!"
Bootnote:
Pay attention to the fact Comcast promised to allow the town to pay them, Comcast, to install the infrastructure that would then allow them, Comcast, to profit by charging for access to it.
They also promised to provide access to "Up To 95%" of the towns inhabitants; Please note that "10%" is "Up To 95%".
