Linus Torvalds drops F-bomb on NVIDIA

Sarah Davis
Coat

who cares ?

.. so he swore, so what ? He has good reason.

My first experience with Linux was a complete fail due to the only Nvidia driver available offered 640x480 - so i replaced my Nvidia with an AMD and I've never bought or recommended Nvidia since. Yes I could have paid for a driver, but why? Drivers are free with the hardware. You don't buy hardware and then have to buy drivers to make it work. Regardless of what your argument is, Nvidia failed badly with Linux. They took a short-sighted and unprofessional stance - other than that it hardly warrants discussion

Microsoft forbids class actions in new Windows licence

Sarah Davis
Coat

hmmm Legally speaking,..

just because MS say this is the case does not actually have any effect on the law

just like el Reg having a bar a the bottom sating (re cookies) "we'll assume you're happy to accept the cookies anyway." does not actually mean anything when the user happens to not be happy (as they haven't provided an "I'm not fine with this" button

jus sayin' - you can't simply declare law and think that it suddenly exists :)

Microsoft kills Windows Live brand

Sarah Davis
Coat

Great way to kill a product

msn msgr 4.8 was prob about the best, it was simple, unbloated, and did precisely what was needed of it.

The problem is that so many companies get greedy, add bloatware, add pointless features, and don't listen to users, and in fact are often uncontactable. This does nothing to install customer/brand loyalty and everything to garuntee customers will start looking for an alternative that is unbloated and simply works.

'Live' is a classic example of a company so out of touch with it's market. While years ago msn-msgr was the main way i kept in touch with my online friends no-one uses it anymore. It's got worse over time and now it's pretty much pointless (though i concede that some folk may still find it useful - but i bet it's market has shrunk by 50% in the past 5 years) .. and has anyone ever clicked on one of those banner adds? can you remember a single banner advert? - lol

if your a company that is oriented by greed then you're doing it wrong !

Rabid skunks attack US

Sarah Davis
Coat

Avoid freindly rabies victims

Rabies usually makes it's victims more dosile and less agressive, appearing friendly and even approachable. For example, the only time a coyote will go near a human is when it has rabies. So it doesn't take an einstein to figure don't approach a friendly skunk (or any other wild animal that would normally avoid humans like the plague). Also, a chicken-wire fence (or similar) dug at least a foot into the ground is a great way to control what can get in or out. That, a gun, and maybe some security staff (unless said skunk has managed to get his name on the list)

Tim Cook's post-PC iPad domination dream crushed by reality

Sarah Davis

jus' sayin'

my gcard takes more volume than a tablet, my pc has 50x more drive space, double the maximum memory of a tablet, 3x the cpu power (i reall need to upgrade old cpu) and 4 monitors. In order for a tablet to even begin to come close to the heels of the PC it would have double it's size and power and have sata3 and usb3, and run windows

Tim Cook is a pillock who has no clue about the real world

Sony exec: quad-core CPUs bad for today's phones

Re: You have no idea what the point of the article was, do you?

oh noooooo, it seems my flippant response has elluded some readers, let me break it down for yooz guyz

ok. to address your rejoinder, l i got rid of my car as the shops are within walking distance (do you remember not driving everywhere coz you were to lazy to walk?) anyway, the car thing doesn't work for me as an analogy. The cooker is so much better - I have an unbelievably small kitchen (as a mini smartphone is to a laptop), but i still NEED a cooker, so I replaced my standard cooker with a mini one, it takes less space and it's more efficient - the point being "I still NEED a cooker" and we don't have any alternative at this point in spacetime!

At the moment our technology has not yet come up with 'food replicators', our best kitchen tech is the oven and microwave. If the head of Sony blah blah said ovens have no plaice in the kitchen i'd laugh at him and make some pisstakey analogy about mobiles not needing quad-cores.

If you still don't get it you're screwed. Bandage your knuckles and chase the sun :)

in other news,..

today, according to a Sony Motoring executive, engines are bad for todays cars and trucks and not appropriate for vehicles. Further statements from a Sony Kitchens executive, white goods are nad for todays kitchens. Fridges, freezers, and cookers (along with secondary appliances like kettles, toasters, coffee machines) are totally inappropriate in the modern eatorium. And finally, in a statement from a Sony Buildings executive, ceiling, walls, and floors, are ruining Roominations worldwide, furniture and possessions have no place in the modern house!

ISP Be admits crippling iPlayer demand burst its pipes

Sarah Davis
Coat

Being going on for months

as a BE cunstomer i can confirm that i have been reporting this problem to BE and the BBC for months, in fact part of the confusion is that it started happening the same day that the BBC upgraded iPlayer. BE would blame the BBC (anyone but themselves), and the BBC just never appear to reply to any emails (as far as i can tell) so they did look suspect.

But in either case it comes down to ineptitude and a lack of professionalism of both parties. Has either party acted with any competence the issue would have been resolved months ago.

BE do a good service when it works, and the support is good (if it's something easy to fix). I was one of their first customers and it took over 2 years before they managed to get anything close to the dl speed i should've been getting - I'm only 1Km from the exchange but initially they got me 2Mbits and said that was the best they could do, i did not accept this, i kicked their arse and eventually they got it up to 18Mbits. So they can be a tad lazy and inept,.... just like most services in Britain these days (ooo, careful, being a little bit 80's there, a little bit Ben Elton !!)

Hasbro sues Asus over Transformer Prime moniker

Sarah Davis
Coat

this is just typical brainless greed and pettiness - and just what is wrong with the world today. How stupid are the morons at Hasbro? Do they really consider that there are people who are so retarded that they may go out to buy the Hasbro product (an effigy from a recent science fiction film) and accidently confuse it for a real piece of modern tech of a completely different size, shape, colour, and function.

This kind of american opportunism (where everyone sues everyone else at every available opportunity as it might prove profitable) is utterly despicable and shows Hasbro have no real integrity and have very small peni !!

Massive study concludes: 'Global warming is real'

Sarah Davis
Coat

Very Old News !!

I thought it was already established that Global Warming was real on account of anyone with a normal functional brain has witnessed the effects for themselves over the past few years.

Generally speaking, in any given situation, it's only morons and extremely untrustworthy (or stupid) political figures who try to deny the obvious facts.

So now normal intelligent people have officially finally been proved right on this matter,... so what? That changes nothing, and we're left in the same situation we were in 15-20 years. The real question is what is to be done, and how soon? (Assuming the Rothschild cartel bank and it's "associates" allow anything to be done, other than start another illegal war on some country that hasn't bought into the western banking system like Iran, Syria, Algeria, North Korea, Sudan, Iceland, and Cuba might be their solution we can pay for with no positive effect for those who aren't stupidly rich).

Carphone Warehouse whipped for cheap Jesus mobe ads

Sarah Davis

Politicians and Mobile Suppliers !!

... you'd have to be pretty dull to believe anything they say !

Given that Carphone warehouse use India to make it's spamming phone sales so it can bypass telesales blocking by the telephone preference service and save money by not having to pay anything close to a respectable wage proves categorically that they have no integrity or scruples - that should be enough to ward off anyone with a brain.

I got conned by them once, I agreed to what seemed like a good deal on an HTC,.. they sent me a crap deal and a Sony.

Given that so many people have had so many problems with Craphone Worehouse does it matter what they advertise - just assume that anything they say/claim/advertise is a lie.

glad to see they're getting the recognition they deserve.

I was with them for a short while. As soon as I was switched over I couldn't phone any mobiles, including my own, from my landline. Galaxy Tab 7.7 pulled from IFA after new Apple moves

Sarah Davis

Apple whining again about superior competition - how typical!

the iPhone 5 is very similar to the Galaxy but has less features and costs more, so obviously Apple are desperate to stop the superior cheaper device from Samsung hitting the market as it may reveal just how overpriced Apple are. Underhand tactics are nothing new for Apple, but all it does is gain more disdain for Apple and more sympathy for Samsung - I don't want or need a tablet, but I'm tempted to get a Galaxy just to counter 'the big evils' petty attitude toward it's competitors. Clearly Apple are scared of competition and will stoop to any length to avoid competing fairly.

That said, most tablet are superior to the iPad, better, faster, cheaper - all of which shows the true nature of Apple, ripping off all it's own customers. So glad I grew out of Applism - it's a nasty brain-numbing trait which effects your visual, thought, and rational processes.

The thing is hybrid drives aren't really economicly viable. For storage and backup spinny drives are the solution, and for fast boot and program drives ssd's are just the thing. For servers arrays of spinny drives are the most obvious solution for speed/size/price, at least until flash prices drop

IBM PC daddy: 'The PC era is over'

Sarah Davis
Coat

Is it Rik Myslewski or Mark Dean on drug !!!

... or perhaps they just have never done any real work on a computer (blogging your misinformed opinion isn't work!)

What an absurd article. It has no basis in reality. Consider the scales of computing kit. At the pinnacle you have your workstation PC (the most powerful most capable computer, with a huge array of large monitors and peripherals which allow it to do almost anything very well). Next, and quite a huge step down is the Laptop (less powerful, less capable, a lot less connectivity, but portable, and for some this is capable enough). Down another step is the Notepad (even less powerful, with an even smaller screen, and less use-able, but slightly more compact portable). Then at the bottom of the techno pile, the meager Tablets and Phones (ven less power, even less useful, with even smaller screens, and even less connectivity).

For many folk, a Tablet and/or is pointless as a serious computing device because it is SO under powered and incapable. As a portable device it's ok for txt'ing & phone calls, GPS can be useful, or even surfing the web if it's important, or playing a game if you're bored waiting for a bus, or using as a media device, but it's barely use-able unless you have a seriously light weight work load.

Realistically you can't do Audio Recording/Production, Video Editing/Production, 3D Production/Rendering, C.A.D, Web Dev, Serious Gaming, or many other professional applications on anything other than a PC because on any of the other devices the screen would far to small to be professionally use-able, it would be under powered (so take longer - if it could cope at all), it would not have adequate connectivity/capability/drive-space, and you cannot blind type a touch keyboard on the tiny screen.

(Ok, some Laptops can do some of the tasks mentioned above in a limited fashion or with compromise).

How can you plug in say,... 3 monitors, 2 sound cards, 2 midi keybs, 2 control surfaces, jog-wheel, scanner, printer, tablet, webcam/mic, usb2 hub, usb3 hub, mouse & keyb into anything other than a PC? A Laptop couldn't cope, and Notepad would be even more inadequate, and Tablets and Phones are just laughably inept (espesh if it's so stupidly designed it doesn't have any USB's).

Of course, if all you do is blog, txt, and play angry birds, and you're rather desperate to convince the world and yourself that you're cool (and quite, quite gullible) then the meager tablet probably would be more than adequate for such small needs, and you may actually believe that YOU have no need for a PC and therefore, as YOU don't need a PC the PC era is over. But for many many millions of professionals, the PC is the only option!

David Cameron turns water cannons on social networks

Sarah Davis

typical MP - inept and missing the point

Cameron is so out of touch, he should step down.

Over the past 20 years the british gov have shut down borstals and remand centres, done away with discipline in schools and in the home, consequently removing the bounderies that previous generations have had, and removing the consequences.

Cameron doesn't have a clue about how ordinary people live. So now he blames social networks,... what a total ARSE - if it wasn't for idiots like Cameron and his gang of criminals we would never have been in this situation in the first place, and we'd still have social networks.

does anyone else think this all seems a bit contrived - so whats the gov's plan, to make facebook, twitter, and txt msg'ing illegal - consider the impact these services have had on exposing corruption! If I was a corrupt politician i'd want them shut down too, but how,.... i know, if i could somehow secretly organise some riots where i could then blame these services (which have exposed some of my friends and colleagues and could potentially expose me),... of course I'd have to make sure my firnds and i were all on hols at the time,.. yes, yes, a cunning plan, no-one would ever guess
