Android apps: Shifty little bleeders

No skewing here folks

So they've run through the permissions being requested by the apps, but not actually checked out what the apps do.

Right.

Video calling impresses Brits, if it's Apple video calling

iamapizza

You sure?

>More than three quarters of brits surveyed said that video calling was the most impressive part of the new iPhone...

Keep in mind that Brits can be very sarcastic. I'm thinking this was tongue in cheek. Sort of like reviewing a book and saying, "I liked the cover very much."

Re: Torn

The keyboard only ever used for searching in the book store. Sometimes to look up a word. That's it.

On a PRS 505 (no keyboard), I do miss the dictionary feature, not sure if the Nook has one.

So I decided to find out how many people were watching HTML5 videos. I asked 1 person and he didn't know what I was talking about. Therefore, I have concluded that, based on this representative sample, that nobody cares about HTML5 and that this conversion is a futile exercise.

DLR is not a feature

Quick correction - Dynamic Language Runtime is not a feature, it's what's commonly referred to as 'a big mistake'. It's been introduced to allow for the porting over of IronPython and IronRuby but will only end up promoting worst practices. Anyone remember variants? :)

Author sums things up pretty well with this sentence: "There is no shortage of new features, so much so that Microsoft itself has done a poor job of communicating the extent of the changes. " (hence the want for babies...)

Google Nexus One

iamapizza

Speaking of keyboards

I bought a Nexus One, but I really wanted a physical keyboard purely because it's faster to type on them. But then I found Swype. This keyboard lets you swipe along the letters of the word and it uses its dictionary to get the word for you. THAT proved to be faster than a physical keyboard, so I would definitely recommend it. However, it's in beta right now, which probably means that it's going to be a paid-for product pretty soon. Since *I* am dependent on it now, I will buy it, but I definitely think you Android owners should give it a try.

Google to plug self into Microsoft Office

iamapizza
Alert

@AC

It's not that simple. First, whether you like to hear it or not, Google haven't exactly been the forerunners of security best practices in the online world. (Of course twitter surpasses everyone, so they get lost in the noise). Second, companies need to protect trade secrets. So while using online services is actually fine, a corporate environment is always going to be full of idiots who fail to understand the difference in where a sensitive document they have is being stored. And they will store it 'in the cloud' so to speak without understanding the ramifications.

Your SMMs aren't stupid, I'm pretty sure they see that it's a good feature/application to use, but it's their job to prevent big mistakes from happening. If they don't block these 'online services' and something does happen, then the shitstorm that happens will make yours look like a weak eddy.

Google to mobile industry: ‘F*ck you very much!’

iamapizza
Thumb Down

Change is good

When you say that Google is shafting or hurting X, you're assuming that this X is pure, divine and full of virtues. Not true. Without this sudden shake up of the mobile industry, it would stagnate and it's us, the USERS who get shafted; not that we're full of virtues, but to us, we're more important than the money that large corporations make.

Good news for non Kindlers

This might be a good thing for us non-Kindlers (Sony Reader, iRiver, etc). You pointed out that the price of buying a book from Amazon was cheaper than Waterstones in many cases. I'm hoping that the retailers take notice of this and stop selling their books at the same cost as a paperback. It does sting a bit to have to bay 12GBP for a 600K file - in the end the books are nothing but files, and so they don't really need to be so expensive. If the other retailers start lowering their prices to compete, *I* win!
