"The desire is the best phone on the market right now bar none if you don't want a big screen (4" plus) or keyboard."

Oh ... and it also needs an "in my opinion" in fronts of it as well.

In fact, apart from the OS, which is very very personal choice, where is this magical Desire better than my HD2?

Why do people (most of which probably never even owned one) love the Desire?

Finger friendly

All these comments are on my Hp TX2:

Only two browsers work in a finger friendly style for me, IE and Firefox. Sadly IE seems to have some bug where you try to enter text on it and occasionaly it gets serious lag and looses key presses. So, Firefox it is. Tbh, apart from this bug, I couldn't care less which of the two I use.

Tried Chrome and it aint finger friendly for me. Tried Opera as it works fantasticly on my phone (HD2) but again, not touch friendly....

Has this reviewer just given life to the old iMac fanboys?

Monty Burns
WTF?

because its a REVIEW!

To be fair, a review is also an opinion and his opinion can be that he doesn't care. On the other hand, its a review and reviews should compare against equaly priced or spec'd or both, other models. When it comes to a comparison, the fanboy reviewer clearly knows that it won't come close to anything in its price range....

And actually, he's spending yours and mine money. I stronly suspect that this was paid for by advertising which is in turn paid for by us (in the long run). If not, then its a review unit and of course he won't care but then, what an incredibly strange thing for the reviewer to say!

WTF?

fanboi mate of mine

I mentioned that Jobs had finaly flipped when he said that "your holding it wrong" to a new iPhone 4 owner friend. He said, and quote "I call BS. I have no issues no matter how much I try to recreate it".....

Accused me of hating the iphone, which I don't. I think it would be a great phone for my fiancee however, ANYONE who claims i'm holding a phone wrong..... well, thats where it all goes wrong. Seriously, did you ever hear Gates say anything like that?

Between Jobs at Apple and the fiasco that is the directors of MS, is it any wonder Google are taking big chunks of market share?

Long live Robby!

Love my Robby (do we all call them that??). Be warned though, if you have a dog, turning him on (ooeerrr!) once or twice a week won't be good enough, ours comes on every week day whilst we are at work and the ground floor is now spotless!

As metioned by a previous poster though, it can get a bit useless in corners/small gaps and dog hair can get piled up there - that said, Robby does a good job of pushing it all into a pile in these places making dog hair easy to pick up! :0)

Our Robby is now 2 years old and cleaned twice a week. Never had a component fail and is still on his first sets of roller brush and sticky-out-the-side brush.

Microsoft unveils – wait for it – another mobile OS

Monty Burns

cant believe you said this:

"Contrast, if you will, Redmond's shotgun-spray approach to the handheld market to Apple's single-shot rifle: Cupertino offers but one operating system, iOS (née iPhone OS), for the iPhone, the iPod touch, and the iPad"

Totaly diferent market to what win 6.1/6.5 are used for on handheld devices (note, NOT phones). For example, many airports use Ultra BRS which run rugged handheld barcode scanners using windows 6.1 to load bags into ULD's (the silver containers). Can you see an Apple device do that? ULTRA are not the only company to use these scanners, Royal Mail do as well for example... again... running 6.1 .... again, not a "phone" in sight on these devices! There are many, many other users.... Winmob 6.x wasn't just a phone O/S you know ;) (well ok it was but it was so versatile....)

Totaly, totaly diferent market - unless Apple would like to start producing new rugged devices!?

And some other posters, seriously? Silverlight? This article isn't about silverlight!

iPhone 4 splashes down on both sides of the pond

Monty Burns

Put in the manual just for people like you

doesn't matter what the specs say, under UK law, its either fit for purpose or not.

Bit like when companies offer you a warranty .... for everything this is on top of your consumer rights which for some items (cars for example) are covered up to 6 years - already proven in a test case.

As I said in another post, they may be using this as a "get out of jail" to try and bluff non-consumer rights aware people into thinking "tough, its broken, see there it says so in the manual" ... people just like you for example.

Of course, if you would like to know more, please feel free to google consumer rights or pop over to the consumer action group website where we will all be glad to help enlighten you.

Monty Burns
WTF?

fit for purpose?

You have to wonder if the Iphone falls under the "fit for purpose" clause on the Sales of Goods act:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html

# Operating temperature: 32° to 95° F

(0° to 35° C)

# Nonoperating temperature: -4° to 113° F

(-20° to 45° C)

I know there is a "buffer" built into these figures but .......

Which basicaly means in UK winter you need to keep it in your pocket and only use bluetooth to communicate with it. Even with it switched off, its still in real trouble in large parts of Europe!

Steve Jobs unveils iPhone 4

Monty Burns
WTF?

ouchies! No air miles collecters need apply

WTF!? Surley we must be missing something, those can't be the realistic temperatures? Maybe they are a "cover my arse" statement?

I've lived in Germany and Poland - both of which can easily spank the minimum operating temps AND then occasionaly the non-operating temps. More recently, i've done six months in South Africa and that can regularly go over the operating temp and even on rare occasion the non. Back in London, in winter the minimum will get passed frequently!

Really? If you travel and want to USE the phone, you cannot seriously buy it with these limits. Even turned off, its at a serious risk.

News Flash! Sheet of paper learns to replicate!

Since when has a sheet of paper replicated itself to my PC without having to do a thing other than plug it in to it docking cradle? I'm no fan of apple and don't own any of the products however, I do use my phone to take meeting minutes which then get sync'd to my pc automaticaly. This makes turning these into more formal notes very easy and quick and in an email before a quick thing! Wouldn't it be a pain if the sheet of paper got screwed up, lost, burned, chucked in a bin .... etc etc etc

There are of course advantages to a piece of paper but your argument is basic, to say the least! At least try and be constructive.

However a sheet of paper is indeed usefull! You can role it up and throw it at somone who's fallen asleep in the meeting ;)

Windows Phone 7 - what's in and what's out

Monty Burns

Downgrading to average

Indeed, I see exactly the same point as you ......

except I don't to be "Joe Average" walking around looking average. Of course, thats how progress is made right? Staying average...

I wana play, tinker, flash, jazz up, style how I want. Thanks MS for at least releasing 6.5 as thats where I will be staying for a good while by the looks of it. So far, it rocks on my HD2 and i'm one seriously rom flashed, customised, happy end user!

After all, why would I want to ruin my fantastic phone experience by going to an Ipho.... er sorry, WinMo7 phone?

MS, go get your mass market and thats what your after, just be aware that you have taken away a big tool of innovation. Lets hope Android gets better in the next year.

Monty Burns

Very happy with 6.5. and staying that way

Wow.... What a mature and insightful post!

Personally, i’m very happy with my HD2 and its Xanny Tech/Evolution rom. From the little fact I’ve managed to read about Winmob 7 I have no ambition to “upgrade” to it as all it would seem to do is remove functionality!

Besides, for anyone that truly wants to remove functionality, i’m sure XDA will sort it out for ya ;)

Sadly Ash, I have to totaly agree with you. MCN whilst a great read is full of "they hate us, lets take the fight to them!" to just about any person who says "Bikers are wankers!". MCN can and do, do a lot of good but they can seem to go one step too far, sadly.

6.5 is awefull .... why not SPB Shell or alike?

Anyone thats used 6.5 with its hex and titanium will know that if they look at it an try to be unbiased, its crap. Its still 6.1 just with an attempt to be finger friendly and sadly, something already done far better (imo) by companies such as SPB with Mobile Shell.

This won't win over anyone MS, the techies will (mostly) stay with WinMo 6.5 or 6.1 and others will go for the phone they were going to purchase already. Status Quo....

Acer Tempo M900

Monty Burns

The A key and Tab

Its too easy to hit tab instead of A (or even both!), they should have been seperate keys. I've often got the A key jammed down as a result of trying to over compensate not pressing the Tab or its not registered the A key at all.

The firmware is awefull at the moment. You can't use mail to save attachments to the SD card as its not very "compatible" with some... although you won't be show any error messages. If you setup like this then you may well get blank screen of death which requires a battery out. The new F900 firmware is out already (which is a positive move by Acer) but it still doesn't cure this problem. If your like me and actually use this for real business work, a few docs/pdfs/speadsheets and thats all your main memory eaten up and out of memory errors .... not acceptable.

I'm currently in the process of returning it to Acer under warranty. A phone that keeps locking up, requiring a reboot, is not usable and "not fit for purpose".

Another issue i've just found, try and get normal headphones working with it ;-) A mini-usb->3.5mm adapter just doesn't work (the phone doesn't detect headphones). This is a REAL problem for me as well as the stock headphones are crap and don't work very well under a crash helmet - i can't hear the raido over my engine noise, something I have no issue with my normal headphones. Try locating 3rd party headphones, i can't find any for hours of searching....

btw, the ' via a symbol key? Many of us on the Acer/Eten forums would love to know which key you pressed in conjunction with the SYM key 'coz its not marked on the keyboard.

Monty Burns
Thumb Up

I've got one

Basic review is ok but you missed out on so important info.

You surely didn't use the keyboard to type anything with an "A" in it, its a pin in the rse to sy the lest. You also didn't need any ' right? Well thats coz there isn't one on the keyboard!!! ... or maybe you used the SIP to type it ;)

Volume level when using headphones is too low. It needs serious boosting, probably in the same way the Omnia does via a hidden menu. We are waiting for Acer to sort this.

Don't let the 128meg of ram fool you or the CPU mhz, get rid of Acer Shell, install SPB MS3 and its FAST, blisteringly fast and I've not had any memory issues at all since owning one.

Would I have one again? Yes if I had not seen the OmniaPro specs (the slide out keyboard version). If the Omnia Pro isn't available, then yes I would.

Acer are pro-activley updateing the firmware which in my book is a big plus. Admit you have mistakes, resolve them. Cooked roms are already available including the usual "lite" versions.

Make no mistake, its a beast of a device, not as big as a Universal (is anything?) but it is big however, it fits in my back jeans pocket fine or in its pouch on my belt hidden by a jacket.

Overall, this phone is a great device for work ... awesome!

Btw, it accepts 16gig cards - at least mine does.

>Apps - only the ones Samsung provides. Just like (almost) every other phone out there then.

Apart from Iphone, Android, whatever Blackberrys OS is called, Symbian and Winmob .... a very large portion (if not all) of the smartphones out there. Hardly the oposite of "just like (almost) every other phne out there".

@Richard

of course, you are indeed correct. Of course though I should have had a more "piss take" attitude and been more aggresive then that would have really sealed your case, or maybe, it is actually going a bit wrong for this release for Apple. I was wondering if i'd compared it to any other phone or been "apple tard this" and "apple tard that" or "hahaha you fanboys"? Think you'll find I'd comment about any company that seems to have ballsed up the release of any product this badly - this week = apple (iPoney division)

Being a good earner I could of course just go out and buy one off contract but then I wouldn't be able to be jealous.... (and I'd have a phone i dont really want, which simply doesn't suit my needs and is neither better nor worse than my current choice of dog'n'bone).

I better go back to my jealous hole and stay there in my jealous mood at my jealous desk.

oh and Richard,

why the iPony comment? coz thats all i'd be prepared to pay for it, off-contract.
