And quite naturally there will be a resistance from the general public as well. More and more people are using stronger security measures, and the uptake of things like Qubes OS and Tails is increasing. I have faith that we'll see more protective software developed for the general public. The internet is a natural ecosystem which will evolve "FBI resistant" strains of software.

When bankruptcy happens, the VCs get their money back because it's protected. It's all the common shareholders who get hosed.

Good idea. But there is already "security slider" which goes from high to low and which automatically adjusts various aspects like that without the user having to understand a lot of details.

Proportional representation is good. Not only does it give the majority a win, but everybody gets representation. This, of course, is only desirable if you want fairness in the system in preference to other qualities.

Obviously concerns and priorities will vary, but to a certain demographic this could be perceived as a Robin Hood action.

That is not true. And please note that the article is about problems with the ISP which is why you would use a VPN to bypass them.

I don't use laptops, but I've noticed that they mostly have one jack now, instead of two. Also, I guess I'm getting old, we used to use speakers as microphones when I was a kid because we didn't have all the stuff kids have nowadays.

I do think that users in general also need to start taking this a little more seriously. We've had computers and the internet for so long now yet many people have actively avoided getting a basic education. We learn arithmetic, grammar, and literature in school so we can actively take part in a society that uses those to understand and communicate with each other. Why not take the same interest in the basic workings of contemporary computer usage? Is that not part of what would be a basic education nowadays? I'm not saying we all need to become mathematicians or expert grammarians, but a basic understanding of the vocabulary of the times is not too much to ask.

It's actually more basic than that. The world has never been a safe place. Most people learn to function in a public setting that includes shysters and con artists of all kinds. We know when others are dangerous or deceptive when we encounter them in person. It is not hard to transfer that knowledge to an on-line environment and at least take a little responsibility for one's own safety.

Hmm, I tend to agree with your post generally speaking. But I guess I'm old fashioned enough that I don't want to go around and replace everything in 10 years. I've got enough stuff around here that wears out already. Said piece of IoT will probably last decades so I think it is wrong to throw it out after a few years if all it needs is new software.

Perhaps I missed the details here, but if the ISP is using CGN (Carrier-grade NAT) then it would not be appropriate for users to have access to that configuration.

That is indeed extremely irritating. I suspect that practice is going to end up burying the whole concept of routers and routing deeply in the world of the networking expert and be completely removed from popular dialogue. Also, especially for a tech publication, it is extremely confusing to be seemingly talking about the speed of routing when in fact the subject is the speed of wireless transmission. Can we not do better here?

What is LinkedIn hoping to gain?

I would think that the "letter" was sent to enquire as to why they did not comply. I'm sure LinkedIn was quite aware of the law in the first place, since it's similar to other countries and was much talked about when instated in September of last year. I'm puzzled as to why LinkedIn didn't just comply with the law of the country rather than pick a fight. What are they hoping to gain?
