eBay bans CD sales of metal band Burzum, citing offensive material

Ole Juul

Ebay

Ebay may well be doing the right thing in this case. It's hard to tell from here. However, many sellers on Ebay are discriminatory and offensive for various reasons. Actually, Ebay itself can be pretty offensive.

Network hijacker steals $83,000 in Bitcoin ... and enough Dogecoin for a cup of coffee

Disappointing for the losers, but the mining business has always been like this. The old gold miners used to say that for every dollar taken out, a dollar is put in.

I don't trust those links. I can also imagine that if Google puts them at the top, then some spammers will think of that as a good thing.

As for non-ASCII e-mail addresses, I think they are long overdue.

They have the same problem with cash. That's why most countries are discouraging its use. They really prefer everyone to make all their transactions through a government regulated institution.

I was thinking more along the lines that after the bubble bursts there will be an awful lot of unsupported kit out there - much of which might be a liability, perhaps downright useless, without a security or other update. There could be an overload at the landfill.

Canada's boffins need A WHOLE YEAR to recover from China hack attack

Ole Juul

Good news, bad news

As a Canadian, I would like to thank the Chinese hackers for nudging at least one government agency into creating a secure infrastructure. That's the upside. The downside is that each of the other agencies will not look at this and do the same until they too are "nudged".

I am not worried, I do most of my math using my fingers.

I probably have less fingers than you, but you're might be right. Whenever they announce a new vulnerability it's likely a good idea to roll back a version or two. Obviously "updating" doesn't work in the long run.

Ole Juul

Re: Confusing wording indeed

Twice in this article, the wording seems to imply that there's been an update to Firefox 31 (e.g. to, say, 31.0.1 or something):

Wouldn't that be an update from? :)

"a bug-and-security update to Firefox 31" and "users are advised to update to the latest version of Firefox 31 and Thunderbird 31".

Yes, that should have something like "which is" in it somewhere. You're right, it's all mixed up.

Re: Banks

why does your bank's website still suck so badly?

I wonder what the author meant by that. I've never really taken a good look at my bank's web site. I just log in, do my business, and log out. As long as I'm able to do that fairly easily, I'm not likely to notice anything else about what's happening there unless it's a security flag. I actually expect them to have bad taste, banks usually do, but the site is always up and always works. Now if they decided to do a "wait for youtube and a thousand trackers" approach, I be getting mad.

Ole Juul

ICANN should explain themselves

"The suspension notice accuses Brandon Gray of “false or deceptive” marketing"

Why has ICANN been so reluctant with this obvious accusation? One might come to the conclusion that they didn't think it was such a bad thing. I think the delay requires a formal explanation and perhaps even a public apology. I would like to see an inquiry into this.

I'm curious about what you mean by "not much worth stealing". Surely anybody with a "serious presence on the Internet" has bandwidth. That's worth stealing.

'Big Internet' wades into 'net neutrality' battle with the FCC

Ole Juul

Re: There is no POTS anymore

"The days of big relays and mechanical switching of calls are practically gone in most areas." POTS hasn't used that stuff for some decades. I've got POTS in my area, and it's been digital switching and multiplexing for a very long time. That said, you're right, most things travel over the net these days and there's not really any differentiation of things like TV and telephone.

So, when the article says:

"The FCC was given a mandate to increase broadband adoption, but that's about it.", that sounds fine, but what they really should be doing is encouraging (much) more infrastructure to handle the anticipated traffic.

Amazon begs Feds for drone test permission slip

Ole Juul

Hard hat?

If your dog is under 5 pounds, you may also want to put weights on it.

Ole Juul

Impressive, but

These obviously won't replace transport trucks, so when they say reduce truck traffic they're talking about the last bit or "local loop". So, exactly what kind of distance can they transport 5 lbs. and still have enough oomph to get back? Also, say a local delivery truck gets stuffed with one ton, that could represent 400 drone flights. Is that a good trade off? I think these drones are cool, but there could be a lot of buzzing about.
