I really wanted this announcement to be about a 4G Nexus 4. I get that flying cars are not easy to invent, but how come we *still* don't have a googlephone with 4G???

Re: 4G Googlephone please!

Thanks Jordan. I've heard that those phones will also be released with vanilla Android in Australia in the coming months, but unfortunately I don't see the magical 1800MHz mentioned in your post, so we're still screwed unless the manufacturers decide to put a different chip in phones being shipped to Oz.... which seems very unlikely to me.

4G Googlephone please!

It's ridiculous that we *still* can't buy a native Android phone with LTE support. And even if I did buy a Nexus 4 and hack it to unlock the LTE chip, it won't work in the right frequency anyway (1800MHz in Oz). C'mon, Google, get your act together!!!

Impressive, but they need to hire someone with the expertise to get the penetrator to hit head-on instead of angled at 45 degrees: I suspect the attitude at the moment of impact can make a big difference to what happens next.

This is how to kill a fly WITH YOUR BARE HANDS!!!

1. wait for the fly to land somewhere convenient

2. put your hand in "ready to flick" mode (index finger bent with nail against pad of thumb)

3. slowly slide your hand along the surface that the fly is sitting on until the fly is just within range

4. FLICK

5. go squish the fly which is now lying stunned on the floor a couple of metres away.

Re: Now this is the way to go.

Actually I quite like the look of wind farms. But the most important question is do they offer value for money?

Martin Budden Silver badge

I like the basic design concept.

Solar panels are expensive, especially the high-efficiency ones, but mirrors are cheap. It therefore makes good sense to cover a large area with mirrors to direct lots of sunlight onto a small area of solar panels.

Also, it will be easy to swap in even better panels in the future (if a significant advance in efficiency is made) and keep the existing mirrors & trackers the same.

Martin Budden Silver badge

...seas might rise in the coming century, which is perhaps the primary reason to be concerned about global warming...

Do you think so? It is possible for everyone to avoid swimming by moving to higher ground (in most cases that's only a very short distance away). On the other hand increasingly extreme weather events can hit anyone anywhere, and a change in climate would have a significant impact on agriculture.

No 4G

Value or not, the biggest problem with the Nexus 4 is the lack of 4G. Even if I do hack the system to turn on the hidden chip, it still won't work on the frequency used in my country (Australia).

Re: Please help a Canuck out here...

I have an independent building out in the back garden. It is used for storage, and as a work space, and as a man's hideaway. It has three rooms: one for garden stuff, one is my brewery & cheesery, one is a workshop/garage with a 32-foot long workbench and an inspection pit and space for four (generally vintage) cars. It is constructed from brick with a metal roof. It is my shed.

Martin Budden Silver badge

Re: Mind you, looking at the boat

Yes, and I'm sure the overlap direction is the reason for the whole roof/boat being encased in black stuff (what is it? plastic sheeting? shiny tar paint?)
