The turn your devices off on takeoff/approach stuff is actually designed to make you focus on your surroundings, be more aware of what's going on and have a general sense of where abouts the nearest exit is.

Let's put it this way: If you're wearing headphones, you might not hear the "we're going to crash and we need everyone to evacuate as quickly as possible". It's something that makes perfect sense really if you think about it.

I hate kids, so I think it's probably fair play that the guy gave him a little slap. Probably deserved it.

BT hijacks business browsers

Sleepless night...

I don't post here very often although I read the register every day. This, however, has seriously pissed me off.

I'm absolutely furious about this - we run a network of LED billboards that use BT Business Broadband as the backhaul for their data as well as to send a heartbeat-style signal saying "yes, I'm still alive".

Guess what happened when http traffic was redirected to this page instead of where it should have been going? Yes, that's right, all of our communications went down and I was woken up at 0340 in the morning by my pager.

THIS SITUATION IS UTTERLY UNACCEPTABLE

If this happens again we will consider suing BT as it's against the terms of service and causes major disruption at our end - bear in mind we don't use web browsers on these ADSL lines and so the only way we know that you have messed up the service is to go into full emergency panic mode.

Congratulations BT, you've wasted 5 people's time and made them lose a night's sleep. I hope you're proud of yourselves...

In Dubai and, you guessed it, I just see a "no service" message on my iPhone. Huge inconvenience, wasted an hour of my time trying to reset stuff on my phone before I read this article.

Flying back to the UK tomorrow, and will be going into our local O2 shop as soon as I get back for a rant and a rave. I spend a lot of money on my phone bill every month and I expect it not to let me down, especially when I need it most (like now).

Sort it out O2 and warn the guys in the shop that I want some kind of compensation and a sincere apology.

I Can Kinda Agree...

I love Linux on the server-side. I work as a Photographer and a lot of the work I do relies on Linux doing what it does best: Running services reliably for months on end.

On the desktop side, however, I find it to be a massive pain in the bum. It's driver support is terrible, and while it's all well and good saying "you can download a tarball from this ukrainian site and then compile it", that's not the way things should be.

The inherent problem with free software is that you, the developer, aren't the one who's pushing the software out there, making people use it because it's easy. This means that 99% of people can't be bothered with it, me being one of them.

Maybe that's why I use a Mac... It's got a wicked GUI and It Just Works. Is that so hard to understand?
